new essay
The ArbCom case against me is vexatious indeed - I shall not contend against those who taste blood. The main complaint even includes my essays - so I wrote one which I hope you will appreciate WP:Wikipedia and shipwrights. It would be fun to see how others react, indeed. Warm regards, Collect (talk) 04:28, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- Certain members of that filing should be banned from BLPs for numerous reasons though it is clear that high standards are liability on Wikipedia. I've never seen anyone actually campaign for knowingly false information in an article - even after knowing its false - but Wikipedia brings all types. - So, just doing this one for the moment. Some of the reference-formatting quibbles are going to apply to all of them, so rather that create a pile-up of pending reviews, we can work out the issues here as a test case. The rest will go faster, I think. Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 16:44, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Squeamish Ossifrage: - The references are fine by the GA criteria, but I know I'd be screwed at the FA level. I also note that all the newspaper.com sources are clippings and do not need subscriptions to access. Though I probably should ask an AWB power user to plow through with the via template. Your suggestions introduce a lot more polish into the article's than really needed for the GA - and I'll need this to help get to writing FA levels. I can research well, but the finer points of Wikipedia's FA-level MOS is something I really don't like so much! I'll have to tinker around - later works adapted a pretty simple style and form, but that film is sorta early and out of touch from later ones. Ugh... not looking forward to swapping reference formats and such... I'll mull it over a bit. Again... FA wise, I'd be screwed on that. Though I'll swap the publisher and such - accuracy is accuracy. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 16:58, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- I do absolutely aim high with suggestion lists at GAC. Taking the time to do a review at any level, I really see no reason not to help make articles the best that they can be. As far as GA promotion goes, obviously I can and do promote with non-GA-level objections still pending (here, I consider some of the prose redundancy actionable as 1a "clear and concise"). Let me know if I can help in any way (and absolutely drop me a note if you're ever considering working on Vitagraph shorts, trust me...). You're a champ for taking on these early shorts. I did a couple before getting scared off and finding refuge in the comparatively easier late-teens features. Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 17:11, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Squeamish Ossifrage: - I'll finish the fixes tomorrow. I also would like to get the silent film lists up an running since I (or anyone in the world it seems) figure out all the releases from all these companies and in what order. Vitagraph will be a part of it, but I do not have the book to get the filmography up either... silent films are so poorly covered on Wikipedia.... ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:02, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'll let you know the good/bad news on Vitagraph now. Beginning some time in in 1910, and lasting until [citation needed], Vitagraph published an explicit "Music Suggestions" for every Vitagraph film, even the silly little one-reeler shorts. These were lists of songs intended to be played by theaters' in-house musician, along with scene cues for when to swap. Functionally, they're very early movie scores, although not really in the way we understand the term in the modern sense (for one thing, they're usually popular music related to the film only by title; it's ... odd). That's the good news; it means that every one of these Vitagraph films, in principle, can have a Music section when the musical accompaniment of nearly all other silent films is utterly lost to history. Oh, and extra good news: Vitagraph also published extensive, if not full, cast lists for all of its films in the same time period! The bad news? All of this was published in the Vitagraph house periodical, and little if any of it has ever been reprinted elsewhere (including in Slide and Grevison's The Big V). Except for a few random fragments, Vitagraph Life Portrayals is not available online in digital form, and library holdings of it are spotty, incomplete, and often incorrectly listed even in the WorldCat holding database! I think I still have my research notes from trying to track them down, but I've sworn off doing Vitagraph because it's a disservice not to include it, but such a pain to get. Good luck! Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 12:24, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Squeamish Ossifrage: - Yikes. No kidding on that. I am really good at tracking down the music scores for when they exist, but so many incomplete records will not help. I just created List of Biograph films released in 1909 which lists all 144 films in order and with all citations to the publication... I think I need to create these types of lists so that we can start figuring out what to do about organizing existing stubs and adding information. It will take me a long time to produce the notes and the extant or lost status on most of these films... but I've tried a new referencing style to cut down on the redundancy. Without organization and lists, we will be lost. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 14:48, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- There's a fairly complete list in Special Collections at UCLA, but I've had mixed luck getting material from there. If they're busy or feeling cranky, their official policy on getting copies out of the special collection is that it costs a deeply outrageous amount of money. Oh, and their WorldCat list for Vitagraph Life Portrayals is simply wrong. But, hey, at least you know where some of them are now, right...? Squeamish Ossifrage (talk) 14:51, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- I will expands articles on Haworth Pictures Corporation films after a few months. Both of you use archive.org content extensively but I can't find anything significant there. How can I find relevant content there? any suggestions? Also it would be better if all silents are added to films by year lists. Regards.--Skr15081997 (talk) 06:45, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Skr15081997: - It is a major pain to go through the lists since I am pretty sure there are gaps in even the lists in the Moving Picture World and others. IMDb does not even cover the basics of some companies and its not a reliable source for starters. If we went adding the silents to a year list the list itself will grow to thousands and thousands of films per year after about 1907 for American releases.... I have about 9000 listings for Universal (1912-1929) and several thousand for 1913 which are not in the AFI catalogs... Media Lantern helps with the searching, but always do a manual check for content because string searches don't beat well-informed searches. Its how I know Thanhouser's film still is probably omitted on the Jan 7 1911 film... the first several pages are missing on the Archive.org one. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 14:28, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I knew nothing about Media History Digital Library project before today. Looks like there's a lot of content waiting for someone to explore. It will be very helpful. Regards.--Skr15081997 (talk) 10:12, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Quid pro quo film GAN review?
Hi there. I recently nominated Tank Girl (film) for GA. I couldn't help but notice that almost all of the other GA film nominations are by you (well done on the number of nominations btw!). No worries if you're not interested, but I just thought i'd throw it out there that if you initiate a review of my nomination I would be happy to review any film nomination of your choice (or pick one myself to review if you prefer) in return. Newspapers.com check-in
Hello ChrisGualtieri,
You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:
- Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
- Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
- Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.
Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.
Thank you,
