{{helpme}} Hey Charlesdrakew! I had a question on image copyrights. I found an excellent resource for historic images that I would like to add to a page I am working on about the historic district I live in. However, I am confused about the copyright designation. The book is free for download through Google Books and was published in 1941. Google writes "This book is provided in digital form with the permission of the rightsholder as part of a Google project to make the world's books discoverable online

The rightsholder has graciously given you the right to download all pages of this book. No commercial or other uses have been granted

Note that all copyrights remain reserved." Does that mean that I would be unable to upload a picture from the book to reference in a Wikipedia article? Thanks! ~~Cclehnen~~

Hey Gobōnobo! Yes, I have been hard at work creating a highly accurate, well-cited, informative page on the Students' Co-op and its frequently convoluted history. What is your connection to the Students' Co-op? ~~Cclehnen~~ (oh, and I guess the main trouble I've come across so far is finding historical photos of the building to use that aren't under copyright. I have a couple from the book "Annals of Psi Upsilon; 1888-1941" and some from different versions of the UMN yearbook "The Gopher", but don't know how I would go about asking permission to the rights for these for the Wikipedia page. Do you have any advice?)

I've no connection to the co-op, but I'm familiar with it. Historical photos of the building might be difficult unless you can find some published before 1923. First though, it would be best to make sure that Students' Co-op meets Wikipedia's notability guideline, otherwise the article could end up deleted. A quick look through online resources doesn't look very promising to me. Barrington Hall (Berkeley, California) has good examples of the sort of references needed. Significant mentions in books, newspaper articles or magazines would do the trick. Being part of the Fraternity Row Historic District will help, especially if there are reliable sources that discuss the building's architecture/history, but wouldn't guarantee anything. I'd suggest first collecting and listing all the resources you've got to see if an article is possible. Gobōnobo ⁺ ^c 17:07, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Gobōnobo! Great, I have some historic photos from "the Gopher" yearbook from 1920 that I'll be able to use then. I was fielding the question of notability myself, especially because I found we once had a not very well-cited Wiki page that was pulled for lack of citations and lack of proof of significant notability, but think that the Students' Co-op can hold water in this respect. Although no Barrington Hall, here's the current ideas I have for students' co-op notability:

we are a historic home, part of a historic district, 2nd oldest house on UMN Greek row, have had many notable past-residents (a pioneer in the field of epidimiology in the 1950s, a Jamacain embassador, the first African-American student to live on UMN fraternity row, an advisor on the education board of LBJ,...), are one of the oldest remaining student housing cooperatives in the united states, one of the first members of the North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO) (citation for the last 2 still needed :/ but the historian from NASCO informed me of this and has been helping me gather information), have been mentioned specifically in the Minnesota Daily many times over the past 70 years, in the Cooperative Builder, in Gopher Yearbooks, and in local newspapers.

The primary source citations I currently have:

Cooperative Builder (1939, 1940, 1941)
Select UMN Gopher Yearbooks (1920)
Mentions in the Minnesota Daily (1939-present)
Minneapolis Heritage and Preservation Commission info on our home (1908-1940)

Where I plan to look next:

Local newspaper articles
More citations from UMN Gopher Yearbooks
Primary sources showing we were one of the first student co-ops from NASCO

Then of course less historic stuff on how we run and who we are by just citing our website and internal documents directly

I hope it will all be enough, but of course the Wikipedia community at large will have the final say. Let me know if you have any further tips in directions I could go in! ~~Cclehnen~~

That's a decent start and it's good that you're talking to NASCO, as they may know of more references. Book references and newspaper articles would help, ideally Star Tribune or anything with a broader readership. Notable residents (if sourced) will help, as will keeping the focus on the history and the architecture. If the article is brought to AfD, they'll be scrutinizing the quality of your sources and be looking at these links:

Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL

And those links are pretty useless given the number of false positives. I'll let you know if I come across any good references. If you haven't already seen it, this page looks helpful.
