I noticed your edits on Living National Treasure (Japan). Please keep up the good work! Since we seem to share the same interest (National Treasures of Japan) you might be interested in User:Bamse/National_Treasures_of_Japan. Currently I am generating User:Bamse/National Treasures of Japan (writings) and would be very glad to find collaborators to work on National Treasure related articles. I was wondering in which way the Living National Treasures differ from art/architecture National Treasures. In this respect I got a bit confused by the sentence: "The term "Living National Treasure" is not formally mentioned in the law, but it is widely used as the individuals thus honored are the counterparts of the works of art designated as National Treasures." in Living National Treasure (Japan). I am not sure what "counterpart" should express. Can you help me out? bamse (talk) 22:23, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the phrasing could use some work. What I meant was that the expression "Living National Treasure" was a reference to the National Treasures, equating the two. I've rephrased it. At this point all I've really done is translate the Japanese article on the Living National Treasures, but once I've finished the actual list I plan to add references and expand the article.--Cckerberos (talk) 23:07, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Very good. I like the new table. Not sure if bold face for the names complies with WP:MOS though. You might want to add another column with years of birth/death. What happens to the Living National Treasure after their death? Do they keep this designation? bamse (talk) 08:02, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. At this point I'm planning to split the list off to a separate article as it is going to be quite long. I've also learned that most of the names in the Japanese list are stage names, so I'll be adding another column to include real names. I think that they formally lose the designation after death. The official database on the Agency for Cultural Affairs' website doesn't include any deceased Living National Treasures, at least. For this reason I'm also thinking of splitting the lists into two groups, "current" and "past."--Cckerberos (talk) 08:28, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea splitting the lists. How about moving Living National Treasure (Japan) to Living National Treasures of Japan for uniformity? bamse (talk) 22:18, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that would be best, I think. I'll go ahead and do that.--Cckerberos (talk) 22:39, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The lists are still quite long. Do you think that it would be a good idea to split them up into the 8 general categories (Noh, Kabuki, etc.)?--Cckerberos (talk) 11:22, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Impressive and fast work! Very interesting and informative lists. I would keep them as they are, i.e., one for performing arts and one for crafts. Presently you have subheadings "Noh", "Bunraku",... and a table column "Category" with identical entries. One of the two (subheading or column) should be dropped in my opinion. If you drop the subheadings, you could make one long table out of it. Are there really no articles on any of the Living National Treasure Individuals? bamse (talk) 13:12, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You might wish to advertise the new lists at Template:Newest Japan-related articles. bamse (talk) 13:15, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yeah, I'm planning on dropping the superfluous column, since I like the way it looks with it broken up by each craft. Since dropping that column, I'd like to add something to make it look a little less bare. Birthplace prefecture, maybe? I haven't done a search for all 300+ individuals yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if less than 10 have articles. Even the Japanese wikipedia is missing articles on virtually all of them. The advertising is a good idea, but I think I'll wait until I get it a bit more cleaned up.--Cckerberos (talk) 14:07, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Living National Treasures

[edit]

Hi! I wikilinked some names from Category:Living National Treasures of Japan in the Living National Treasure Lists. I could not find Itō Shinsui and Kawase Hasui in the crafts list. In fact there seem to be no painters at all in the list. bamse (talk) 08:10, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing I noticed. On wikipedia it seems that actor names in western alphabet are (sometimes?) spelled in the same way as in Japanese, e.g., Bandō Mitsugorō VIII instead of "Mitsugorō Bandō VIII". Have a look at Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(Japan-related_articles)#Names for the convention. bamse (talk) 08:20, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I noticed that as well. It's strange, but there seem to be no Living National Treasures for painting. I don't think either Ito or Kawase were National Living Treasures. Ito's article notes that he was "the equivalent" of a Living National Treasure, but his award predates the designation. Kawase's article appears to be incorrect. A quick google search and in a biographical dictionary turned up no mention of his being a Living National Treasure. I find it very surprising that there's no official list of former Living National Treasures on-line. The current list is taken from the Japanese wiki, so it may be missing people. I hope to be able to get a chance to check my university's library and see if they have a book with a list.
That's a good point about the name order. BTW, I'll be going on a research trip for 2 weeks from tomorrow, so my participation on wiki will be reduced.--Cckerberos (talk) 08:45, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since when has the designation Living National Treasure been awarded? Concerening the designation is it the same as for non-living National Treasures? For the non-living NT I restricted the lists to designations after the redesignation on June 9, 1951, i.e. "new National Treasures" as there would have been too much to list otherwise (basically all "Important Cultural Properties"). bamse (talk) 09:40, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Living National Treasure system was set up by the 1954 amendment of the Cultural Property Protection Law.--Cckerberos (talk) 14:08, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties

[edit]

Hi! Very glad to see that you are expanding List of Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. Just some thoughts (feel free to disagree): In my opinion having a short description to each property in the table is very important to make the list interesting for non-experts. On the other hand, I don't think, the designation year is all that interesting and the "Japanese" column could be merged into the first column to gain some space. Did you consider splitting the list because of length? bamse (talk) 22:02, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that a description of each is important and hope to add something in the future. I haven't included a description column because I'm not sure yet what the best way to handle that is. I think separating the Japanese from the English provides both aesthetic and functional benefits. It makes the name stand out rather than just part of a block of text. Best would be something like how it's handled on List of Prime Ministers of Japan, perhaps. You're right that the article is going to need to be split. Descriptions should also probably be added before each section to provide an introduction.--Cckerberos (talk) 23:41, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you take a look at the List of Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties#Fūryū section, you can see a quick example of what I think might be a better way to list things. I think a potential problem with the list in general is that I think that a number of the dances, etc., aren't particularly different from each other.--Cckerberos (talk) 02:35, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that looks good with the Japanese text and gives more space for the description/remarks, even on my small screen. (Might be worth converting the other cultural properties lists to this format (for the first column) one day.) Not sure how to distinguish similar dances as I don't know anything about the topic. bamse (talk) 09:44, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, did you update all of the Cultural Properties lists to include recent designations? I know that the National Treasure lists are up to date (no designations in 2011) and noticed that you added some entries to the Living National Treasure lists, but how about the other lists in {{Cultural Properties of Japan}}. If you did not check them, I would update them. bamse (talk) 10:58, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I only updated the two Living National Treasure lists.--Cckerberos (talk) 01:17, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And the Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, no? bamse (talk) 07:48, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. I updated that as well.--Cckerberos (talk) 07:19, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Will have a look at the others. bamse (talk) 10:30, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

328 Outstanding Japanese Photographers

[edit]

{{Admin help}} An editor used a bot in 2007 to create articles such as Tadao Tominari and Takeyoshi Tanuma. The editor appears to have created an article for every individual listed in the book 328 Outstanding Japanese Photographers. Some have been edited in the 5 years since, but the rest still just take the form "name (years living) is/was a renowned Japanese photographer". As they contain no specific information regarding any notability, I think they likely meet criteria A7 for speedy deletion. The problem, though, is that there are hundreds of these articles, so I'm not sure what to do. Individually labeling and submitting each one seems really laborious. Is there any way to automate this, something along the lines of "all articles edited by User:Polbot on 1 October 2007 that are still less than 1 KB in size"? Cckerberos (talk) 13:16, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cckerberos. Since your quest needs the help of administration, I have altered your help template so an admin will come runnin'. I would imagine that there probably is a bot that would do the work if the admin agrees. Have an excellent day! – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 19:54, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. What a problem. Have you seen how many pages the bot made - I stopped counting after 12 pages of 500... But many have been edited to "full" articles, so the bot's efforts were not in vain. My suggestion... Pick on one to run for AfD - speedy is not really an option after all this time and for such a large block, then on the AfD discussion page - list the other pages (I wouldn't bother tagging them with AfD templates - just think of the effort if they decide to keep!) - just state that "this list of pages is also to be included (but not tagged at present)"  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:18, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I'll do that. Cckerberos (talk) 21:02, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder how the page count jumped from "328" TO "500"? Let me know, Cckerberos, when and where you begin the AfD, and I will come and add my support. – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 21:22, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. The higher number is because the bot was also used to create batches of other articles. For example, stubs for Zimmermannia ovata and every other species listed on the IUCN Red List. A lot of those have fortunately been expanded, though. Cckerberos (talk) 21:31, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it's up: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hideki Kasai. Cckerberos (talk) 23:05, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, congratulations.

It's amusing that one of the two names with which you start this thread is Takeyoshi Tanuma. Tanuma's notability and article-worthiness are blazingly obvious to anyone who knows the second thing about photography in Japan. (The first thing is that Moriyama takes moody photos of Shinjuku and other places that end up looking like Shinjuku, that Araki takes photos of women showing their pudenda, and that Moriyama and Araki are good buddies.) It's a sad comment on Wikipedia that it lacks an article on Tanuma, who has (for example) for years been the head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. I'd be delighted if somebody created an article. In the meantime, deletion of the silly substub about him would be no loss whatever and wouldn't trouble me in the slightest, even though my regard for Tanuma is so high that I have at least two books of his photography, one book about his photography, and several books edited by him. (Oh, and I contributed a crappy photo of him.)

(Tominari is not as well known, but he's a nature photographer whose significance is obvious from his page in the book.)

Now and again I summon the energy to transform one of these annoying substubs into something resembling an article. Just yesterday, Kei Orihara. Well, that was greeted less than ecstatically. Truly, some "wikignomes" work in mysterious ways.

Can I interest you in augmenting any of the hundred or whatever? By my count, I've done almost forty in my time. You might find it amusing to have dozens annihilated while simultaneously developing one among them. -- Hoary (talk) 00:05, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I did a search on Tanuma before opening the AfD and decided that he wasn't a good choice ;) I think the only reason I chose Tanuma and Tominari was because their names were next to each other on the list.
I have no objection to expanding the articles, but I don't have easy access to the kind of sources that would be helpful and don't know much about photography. Some, like Tanuma, would be relatively easy, I think, but most would likely end up like what I just put up for Tominari. Some dry facts, but still nothing substantial. Hello sir, I would just like to say that your articles: Hosokawa Rule, the assassination of Ashikaga Yoshinori and the Rebelion of Uesugi Zenshu are all on my bookmarks and I read them with frequency. I have purchased tons and tons of hard to find books on Japanese history and have been obsessed with the subject for some years, I am looking forward to enrolling in classes to learn the language soon out of strong desire to be able to read Japanese history sources in the native language for the very reason I'm writing you, you see, I am absolutely obsessed with the Muromachi period but ESPECIALLY the period of the post Onin War to the death of Ashikaga Yoshiaki. This is a very difficult period to find English source information about and you can imagine how elated I was to find your articles, particularly regarding the Hosokawa rule though I am equally fascinated by the Kanto situation in the Muromachi period as well as the tenure of Ashikaga Yoshinori. I am a great admirer of the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru and am always searching high and low for information about him. He as well as Ashikaga Yoshitane. I beseech you please to keep writing articles of the time period. Honestly I'm not that interested, personally, in Oda Nobunaga, the so called "Three Unifiers" but I am greatly interested in all the developments in Kyoto during their time (I.E: Miyoshi Clan, Shogunate history, etc.) I would really love to speak to you sometime, if we could exchange emails that would be wonderful. I truly hope you will continue writing, I would love love love to see something from you about the assassination of Ashikaga Yoshiteru (akin to your article about the assassination of Yoshinori) or even the Meio Coup. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:26, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
