File:The X Factor world map.png

[edit]

Hi, I don't think "upcoming versions" need their own colour, because they're either a country's own version or a joint version, and can just be dark or light blue. It will mean less changing of the image when series begin, and I doubt it'll be changed when new ones start, so do you think it should just be the two shades of blue? Thanks for updating though, I know it was out of date. I've also left the same message at Commons. –anemoneprojectors22:18, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed the map was not up to date, so I decided to make some corrections. As far as the upcoming versions are concerned, we could decide which version is likely to begin or is already begun (Israel, I think) and painting it dark blue scrapping from the map upcoming version scheduled for 2014 (Vietnam). What do you think about? (I left the same message on Commons)--Carnby (talk) 10:10, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao Carnby,

Can you please if you can SVG-ize these two signatures as well? In the second pic the watermark also needs to be removed. Again, many thanks to you. Jaqeli (talk) 19:06, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Now that is golden perfect. Thanks a lot Carnby again :) Jaqeli (talk) 22:05, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Carnby, is it somehow possible to recover and restore this image? It is in bad condition and the body parts are badly seen and is it somehow doable to restore its quality somehow? Image is in a badly damaged. Jaqeli (talk) 10:19, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

George XI signature

[edit]

Hey, um, there's an error in the inner circle for George XI, at the bottom. Have to be careful with vectorised signatures; if they aren't spot on, they're misleading. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:09, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Adam Cuerden: & @Jaqeli: Now?--Carnby (talk) 20:52, 8 February 2014 (UTC) Hmm. It's certainly pretty good, but it's not quite an exact match. I'm not sure what the standards are, though. The Levan one is lot more precise of a match, so I suppose it'd be nice to see it reach that level? Line weights are very inaccurate, the hook at the top is a bit off, the loops have all changed size, and the blunt end of the line below the inner circle has become sharp. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:16, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just interested

[edit]

Ciao. Just interested about the Italian surnames. For example Silvio Berlusconi, Isabella Cervoni, Gaetano Astolfoni etc. have the end suffix -oni and wanted to know where does this suffix originate in Italy exactly? Which regional people have this kind of surnames ending on "-oni"? Thanks. Jaqeli (talk) 22:04, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So did I understand correctly, -oni means "bigger" and Alessandroni is a bigger Alexander? Jaqeli (talk) 11:42, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So big Jaqeli would be something like "Jaqeloni"? Jaqeli (talk) 13:34, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds nice :) How to pronounce the -one? Like Jaqel + own or Jaqel +on +eh? Jaqeli (talk) 13:58, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just to note

George XI & G(h)aribashvili signatures

[edit]

@Jaqeli: & @Adam Cuerden: Do you think they're better now?--Carnby (talk) 21:27, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Much better. Only thing I'd suggest is that on George XI's signature, the loop on the lower right of the inner circle looks a little different in the JPEG - a bit more diamondish-shaped, maybe? Other than that, it looks pretty reasonable. Maybe tweak the line weights at the bottom of the outer circle; line weights did have some significance in the days before ballpoint pens, but that's pretty minor. I've also added a note on the Commons page for the Gharibashvili signature. It's minor, but it's hard to point to the correct point in words. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:38, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have to admit I've never fully understood the vector-of-signatures thing entirely, mind ye, so you might want to check with someone who's worked with them more for a full critique. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:35, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Adam Cuerden: I tried to adjust the SVG files according to your suggestions. Comments and criticism are welcome!--Carnby (talk) 22:09, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Carnby for some corrections there and for crown as well. Jaqeli (talk) 07:35, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks..

[edit]

Many thanks Carnby. Grazie gratzie mille. :)

Can you please update the length of the arrows on some letters?

Mostly these letters:

  • ზ (7th letter) - It needs a longer arrow going up and then turning to the left that one could see how that's written. And it lacks one more arrow at the left side under the upper belly which would go down and would turn right with curved arrow.
  • ნ (13th letter) - It needs a longer arrow which would go down a bit to make sure how it's curved down there.
  • პ (15th letter) - It's direction is somehow wrong as it should go right with the curved arrow so it would be better if you'd curve it with the down-to-right arrow.
  • ჟ (16th letter) - Please move closely that arrow to the hook itself.
  • რ (17th letter) - The first arrow in the up should be longer and should start from that very beginning on the top going down and making a curve.
  • ტ (19th letter) - Please move the curved arrow closer to the letter itself as it is now too distant from it.
  • უ (20th letter) - The first arrow needs to have a better curved arrow which would go inside the beginning of that letter to the right.
  • ფ (21st letter) - The first arrow needs to be longer and should curve around the belly. It should go down with the arrow right-to-left and down.
  • ჰ (33th, last letter) - It should be done as the პ letter (15th letter.)

Hope all these corrections won't scare you :) Gratzie :) Jaqeli (talk) 09:13, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Italian Pronunciation

[edit]

Hello, yes, I did correct some Italian pronunciations because they were very wrong: saying Magénta is not speaking some "dialect" (by the way, this is the English Wikipedia, not the Italian one, and the term "dialect" relates to regional pronunciation, not to a local language), but pronouncing a place name in the local regional Italian. I would not ask the English to pronounce a local, English, place name according to my American pronunciation, why are you asking the same thing of Northern Italians to pronounce place names according to your Central-Southern Italian dialect? Tanti saluti, --Mondschein English (talk) 23:33, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mondschein English

[edit]

Troviamo compromesso?

[edit]

How do we make sure that Wikipedia gives the most accurate pronunciation(s)? On the one hand, I totally agree with you that the standard pronunciation should be mentioned, but on the other I believe it is imperative to show readers the regional pronunciation of the same place names, otherwise Wikipedia would be lacking encyclopedic value. About the whole polenta thing: I will try and look for reliable sources that polenta is popular in Tuscany, as well. Wikipedia requires sources, not OR. :-) Tanti saluti a te, --Mondschein English (talk) 19:12, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your reply. Ok, so, first things first: the good news is I found sources that state that Polenta is indeed prepared and eaten in Tuscany, therefore I am going to add the reference and we are good with that.
For what concerns pronunciation patterns: what bothers me about the "locally" thing is that I have lived almost 10 years in Milan, I have studied linguistics, etc. and I have to say that, for instance, magenta is pronounced magénta not only in Magenta but also just about everywhere in Northern Italy. They say Magénta in Milan, in Bergamo, in Brescia, in Turin, etc. If we don't find an agreement, then I would prefer to just mention the standard, official Italian pronunciation (Magènta) and that is it, otherwise readers might think that magénta, matéo, polénta, etc. are all just something people say in a teeny tiny insignificant area.
Yes the "n" in that position is indeed nasalized. Is the symbol you used an indication of nasalization? If so, good, just keep it there.
My mom is Milanese and I can assure you that consonant germination is non existent. In northern Italy there is vowel germination (paas, lüüs, rööd, lööf, etc.), but not consonant germination. What makes you think that somebody in Northern Italy would say "Mat'teo" instead of "Mateo"? Are there really books that state that? Ciao, --Mondschein English (talk) 22:52, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Edit Warring

[edit]

One more thing: I think we are bordering on Edit Warring here, we keep going back and forth, and that is not very productive. I could put one of them banners/announcements on your talk page, but I prefer not to, I would find it appropriate only in extreme cases, plus I don't really sense any bad faith here, only passion. Let's try to work on this together. Regards, --Mondschein English (talk) 11:11, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Orleans history

Hi. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Russo, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Rossi (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 07:20, 30 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Italian phonetics and phonology (/sC/ clusters and raddoppiamento)

[edit]

Carnby, I notice from your IPA corrections of Toscana and prosecco that you seem to have a firm grasp of Italian phonetics and phonology. There's ongoing discussion of syllabification of /sC/ clusters (e.g. [traˈsteːvere] vs. [trasˈteːvere]) and of reporting or not RS ([tʃitˈta ddi kaˈstɛllo] or [tʃitˈta di kaˈstɛllo]; [oltreˈpɔ ppaˈveːze], [oltreˈpɔ paˈveːze], etc.) that you might be interested in. Now at the survey or request for comments stage, looking for consensus to establish general English Wikipedia policies for Italian transcription. (The /sC/ discussion is annoying long, but a lot of information is buried in it.) Help talk:IPA/Italian Barefoot through the chollas (talk) 15:59, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How's your German?

[edit]

I think we really should have an English version of Gebrochene Grotesk [de]. I've already created Tannenberg (typeface) from the German article using google translate and common sense, but that one was relatively straightforward. Google translate is good, but not that good as it just doesn't have the technical vocab. How's your German? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 09:24, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Translation

[edit]

Hi. I saw that you are a native Italian [1]. I would like to know if you can help me verify information concerning Monica Bellucci and her first marriage with Claudio Carlos Basso. She speaks in Italian in this fourth paragraph: "L'Ex Marito - Mi sono sposata a vent'anni con Claudio Carlos Basso, il fotografo, e ci siamo lasciati dopo sei mesi." I would like your own English translation, please. Oroborvs (talk) 12:04, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Oroborvs: "At twenty years old I married Claudio Carlos Basso, the photographer, and we broke up after six months. A disappointment. With Vincent Cassel it lasted eighteen years. We met on the set of a movie, L'appartement. It was an irresistible attraction." Why got it over? "It was a relationship that ceased to have a reason to exist. We evolved differently, we were two parallel stories that no longer intersected." Did you live separate lives with Cassel? "In our profession there is no everyday life. It makes no sense to ask yourself: what did you do, who did you see. After all, in every couple there is a common space and one for oneself. Today a great affection still bonds us: I would run if he needed to, and I know he would do the same for me. We spent Christmas together, on the mountains, in Zermatt, with our two daughters. I don't know if he has another partner. I am single." They wrote that he was dating an Azerbaijani producer. "Nonsense. I attended an evening party by him in Turkey, Richard Gere was there too; and there was also his wife. Today I am alone. For the first time in my life I don't have a man by my side. And I manage to live. I work on introspection: I look inside myself. I tried hypnosis, I've found memories of my childhood that I had removed. I could have spent my adulthood sitting in a velvet chair; I decided to stand up, to take a risk, and I feel that this is how it should be. I'm not afraid."
-- Carnby (talk) 15:55, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply; I was focused on the detail: sposata a vent'anni, I wasn't sure if it was "at 20" or "twenties (20s)". Oroborvs (talk) 17:43, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Oroborvs: A vent'anni means 'at twenty years old'; 'in her twenties', well, there's no specific word or phrase, perhaps alla/sulla ventina?. It's more common sulla trentina, sulla cinquantina...-- Carnby (talk) 18:27, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. Oroborvs (talk) 18:42, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stars etc., and disambiguation notices

Hi, I saw your query on the Ref Desk, and wondered how interested you are in astrology. I've used it as a tool to try to understand character for many years - Astrodienst has supplanted my old ephemerides and tables of houses etc. It's not exactly a preferred subject here on WP, but when it works the results can be stunningly accurate. By the way, if you click Preferences → Gadgets → Display links to disambiguation pages in orange, it does exactly that, and the bot will never trouble you again.
