Heroin disambiguation

Hi, I'm not sure that removing the disambiguation from dope and junk is the best thing to do. I know that normally clearing up ambiguous links is useful but in this case the links are not to e.g. Dope (drugs) or Junk (drugs) but instead to general purpose articles on Recreational drug use and Hard and soft drugs neither of which actually mention the terms dope and junk. In particular the junk disambiguation page gives information on the origin of the term. Is it valid to keep a link to a disambiguation page in these circumstances? If so, I'd like it changed back, perhaps with a hidden comment requesting to keep them. --Colin 11:33, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I've created an account now to avoid this in the future, but was wondering what the issue was with a user who had the IP address 219.89.158.16 just in case it was something I did inadvertently/by mistake, or wrong for a reason I'm not aware of. More than likely just somebody who was assigned the same IP address as me if I'm understanding it properly, I can't think of any edits I've made which would have been a problem. Hi YCB, been looking at the cdn airports, now using your examples of Acme Airport and Carcross Airport's. A question, the term IATA, in reference to location indicators. I believe IATA has input into the call sign business, but each country is responsible for these codes. Transport Canada does ours. The idents are broken into domestic and international ICAO. Idents can be duplicated, and are also used for radio lic. So here in Whitehorse, the domestic ident is YXY, the VOR is also YXY, ICAO in Canada we throw on the"C", so CYXY is for the International airport, weather etc. When you look at YCB, CYCB, YCB and CB are used. The metar you scribe is idented as CYCB, but your upper wind forecast still uses YCB. So basically, anything with an ident, drop the "C" in Canada and you get the domestic ident (what is ref to as IATA). Acme would be EG2, etc... Lommeri

Anyway I have started to look over the airports, proofing and where possible adding detail. Lommeri

I see what u mean, but I am still confused as to why IATA codes would be used, 30 years in aviation and this is the first I have heard of them having anything at all to do with airport codes. They have all sorts of other standards that they enforce, but being an organization run by and for the airlines. The only stardard I can see tham being involved in, is standard codes for baggage tags. Each country codes their airports based on many criteria, including radio licencing issues. I can't find ours, we now use an internal database and everything we use is the 4 letter ICAO codes. the FAA 7350.72 is published every 112 days. With US and Canadian airport and radio call signs. The authority quoted is US and Canadian Fed governments for these issues. 1-2-2 Assignment Authority c. Transport Canada assigns two, three and four character identifiers, including 3 letter identifiers beginning with letters Y and Z, for its area of juristiction. In Canada any airport ident with 3 letters all start with a Y or Z, YCB, Cam Bay, ZFM ft Mcfoo etc, secondary airports are 2letters 1 number. ICAO standards call for 4 characters, so here we just throw a C in front. So the way I look at it, anything in the CFS is assigned an ident, which automatically is made to the ICAO standard, but if you drop the C what is left is the domestic airport location identifier. Since IATA is used to standardize the travel industry, it would make sense to code places where commercial travel is available. ZBB is used for training and general aviation and has no need for baggage tags, so no IATA code. Aklavik has daily service with Aklak Air from YEV, and maybe they aren't IATA compliant, but when I used to fly there, I am sure they had tags with YKD. A lot of the major airports use the ident, well as their identity. Most who haven't lived under a rock know where JFK, LAX, YVR airports are, and this seems to be a combo of airport identifiers, IATA baggage tags, navaids, weather coding and probably other factors. I honeslty meant no harm and was doing what I saw other companies doing. We have many tutorials and how to's that individuals could reference. That was my only intent, perhaps I went about the process all wrong. I'll conceed that. Specifically point out the "points of views" because I have cited the opinions of locals that I know, my own research is that I know Oyster Bay as well as anybody and probably better than them as well. If my contributions were such nonsense, than why did you keep the majority of what I contributed? The same objections could be made by anybody about what you left in.

What you have done with your edits, which I percieve from my point of view at this point as vandalism, is discouraged me from making contributions about the Sutherland Shire generally and also Rugby League. These edits were done, and correct me if I am wrong, with no personnel understanding about the things I was writing.

Again you assumed I was bluffing and acting in bad faith about the administrator. I spoke to him and he reviewed it and has been advising me about how to deal with it according to Wikipedian principles. He refuses to become personally involved because he says he does not really care about the specific issue and does not want to be bombarded at the moment.

Clarification

Perhaps I was ambiguous. All the information I contributed about Oyster Bay was uncited and comes directly from my own knowledge. If you destroy and edit it based on that fact than you must also edit the rest of it out. Silly rule however in my opinion, it should be unless it can be proven it was wrong.

As for local speculation, it is based upon the local communty hall meetings, running with the OBK, asking several residents about the three incidents I mentioned in the article and a knowledge of the Oyster Bay character-naturally anti authouritive.

Deleting Images

It's easy to see how to include such things in an article, but how does one get at them to edit them. (I want to have the actual symbols appear in the first one, not merely ([]) over and over.) Missing image

This one's driving me bonkers.

As you may remember, I wrote the article "Big Dipper." Right at the top I included "Image:Ursa Major constellation map.png". While that's okay, it's not exactly right.

I downloaded it, edited it, and put it back as "Image:Ursa Major constellation detail map.PNG". Now I know it's there. [4]

The problem is that when I try to replace the orginal image in the Big Dipper article with this one, it refuses to show up. Help! B00P 06:13, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

It's the talk page. It was not written to be published from my side. It was written to talk! Everything on the talk page can be found via google! I didn't want that a simple discussion will be archived for the next 1000 years. Did I have at least the right to delete only my words? (Posting here to keep the convo in one place) I don't know of any applicable policies that will help us decide whether to delete individual comments, but as a general rule, nothing gets deleted around here. Wikipedia works on the principle of openness, and it would make no sense for that discussion to be chopped in half just because you want to delete your words. Are there any particular reasons why you want to delete your words? Finally, on your question about the rule giving Wikipedia the right to publish your words: at the bottom of the edit box, there's this thing that says "You agree to license your contributions under the GFDL." enochlau (talk) 12:13, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

The reason is, that the talk pages can be found via google. Here comes the explanation:

There are differences between an article and a talk page. Why the quick and dirty content of a talk page gets archived, whereas this is not the case for the high quality content of an article? The answer is easy. The article will be changed whereas the size of a talk page will grow. For this reason additional to the page history archive pages are used. How long the content of a talk page will be stored? Did you really believe that it is usefull to store every posting to a talk page for the next 10 or 20 years?

On the other hand for a search engine there is no difference between a talk page and an article. The PageRank is high for both types. For instance the PageRank for this talk page is 6. For this reason google is listing the talk page first if you search for instance for - CambridgeBayWeather - or - "Canadian airports" Wikipedia -. Additional there is more text given on the talk pages. For this reason if you search for instance for - movable type Phaistos - at google, only talk pages are listed. I didn't think that my words on a talk page are important enough for that.

Maybe my question was not clear at this point. I was asking CambridgeBayWeather about his right to republish my words, after I had said that I didn't want it. The right to copy text from wikipedia via the GDFL is something else. Kadmos 22:12, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

So what if the talk pages can be found via Google. If Google doesn't index the pages properly, that's its problem. If people searched via the sidebar search box there should be no problem. This is only the wikipedia view. Most people are searching the web via google, yahoo etc. To say use wikipedia search instead of google is not helpfully.

There is a misunderstanding. After I got no answer to my question: "Did I have at least the right to delete only my words?" I have deleted only my words. CambridgeBayWeather was reverting this deletion without gtiving any explanation. See [5]. Kadmos 23:53, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm really sorry, but I think CambridgeBayWeather's actions here were the correct course of action. It is bad to delete text even from a talk page, as it renders other people's comments out of context. The general way to revoke a statement is to leave it on the page strike it out using <s> tags. The only times when comments are permanently deleted are when we have things like defamatory statements being posted - this isn't the case here.

As for the Google argument, I personally search Wikipedia using Google. However, it is unethical and unwise to alter the content of pages and articles to artificially adjust the page rankings. For me sentences like "Duhoux' criticism is ..." at Talk:Phaistos Disc/Archive2 about an article of Yves Duhoux published at the American Journal of Archaeology are far away from being objective. I must apologize I've been away most of the day and almost missed all this. I replaced your comments because the removal would break up the discussion for future editors that wanted to catch up, which is why I approached the deleting editors in the first place. It's not common practice to remove comments, apart from personal attacks and vandalism even on talk pages. As to the GDFL I was working from Wikipedia:Ownership of articles#Legal ownership of text and GNU Free Documentation License. Although they are talking about the article I believe that it would also apply to discussion on talk pages. But of course IANAL. I most certainly have no objection to the use of <s> tags to strike out your comments just the total removal of them. Please be aware that I know nothing about the article in question nor did I actually read the discussion. This all came about due to a question on the Reference desk. Maybe you should try reverting articles (and/or discussions) that need it, due to vandalism or something else, and leave alone those that have nothing wrong with them. Deletes

I'd like quick deletes for the articles "Alpha Crucis," "Beta Crucis," and "Gamma Crucis." They redirect to "Acrux," "Becrux," and "Gacrux" respectively. This is the reverse of how such things are standardly handled. I would then move the three actual articles to their newly-vacated names and establish new redirects. Thank you. • Yes. The standard is to have the articles given by the Bayer designations with the common names redirected there. Thus Alkaid, the star at the end of the Big Dipper/Plough, redirects to Eta Ursae Majoris which is where the actual article is located. B00P 04:16, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, what am I getting wrong now? "Alpha Crucis" already existed as a Redirect to "Acrux." Want is wanted is that "Acrux" Redirects to "Alpha Crucis." You tell me that it's just "a straight move." As I understood it, one can't move into an already existing article, one can only cut-and-paste. The Help page says not to do this because the Discussion and History pages get lost. Please clarify. I've left word over on the Esperanza page. I can't believe the comment I just got from another user regarding my blocking of a "MilkMan Vandal" sockpuppet. Add to that the sheer bile I've been getting from new users who refuse to abide by the rules and you have the makings of a real donnybrook. I've tried to balance "wiki-policing" with some new articles and repair of some exisitng articles, but I can't come up with a new subject every day as I believe in quality over quantity. If you'd like to restore them, go right ahead! I don't mind. I usually leave old warnings, unless the warnings make the page scroll. If so, I trim them back, so that whoever this is will definitely see the new warning. No guarantee that this IP is static, so old warnings are useless IMHO.
