Recent edit at Eilat Mazar

[edit]

I was a little concerned by the edit summary you left at Eilat Mazar when you made these extensive changes [1]. ("Page overhaul under the direction of Dr. Eilat Mazar.")

WP has quite an evolved policy, WP:COI, when there is a potential for conflict-of-interest between the interests of the subject of an article and a neutral presentation -- as I am sure you can appreciate, the project has to be very careful about the possiblity of the subjects of articles or their proxies editing articles to reflect their own perspectives.

I have not had time to review your contribution in detail, but I have made a request on the relevant noticeboard (WP:COIN) for editors who specialise in questions of this kind to have a look over it.

Sorry if this seems unduly bureaucratic, but I am sure you can appreciate why WP has to be quite vigilant when there might be questions of this kind. Jheald (talk) 11:38, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't seen this or the post at COIN (which I shall look at), but I've reverted it as inappropriate. You are free to make suggestions on the talk page of the article but should not be editing it directly. I'll note that you removed a quote that was critical of Mazar. The problems with the edit range from the conflict of interest issue to removing critical material to minor things such as using 'Dr.' which we don't do - we simply note people's qualifications and after the first use of their full name we use their surname or a pronoun. CKEames, thank you for wanting to contribute here on wikipedia. According to your recent post, you state that you are working on behalf of Eilat Mazar. Please note that there are policies in place because it is common for individuals to want to correct their page either directly or through another person such as yourself. The problem is introduced when well meaning people who are new to wikipedia make very logical assumptions about what should and should not be included on a wikipedia article. It is for those reasons that you are probably encountering difficulties "simply updating" this page. I am very happy you want to contribute properly to this article, but let me point you in a couple of good directions:

  • People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to [{WP:NPOV|neutral point of view]], verifiability of information, and biographies.
  • For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for articles.

Feel free to reply to this with questions as well, we are happy to help, but those links above will really help guide you in the correct direction. Tiggerjay (talk) 19:57, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
