Speedy deletion nomination of User:Burtherman
[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. A tag has been placed on User:Burtherman requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Deletion of my user page
[edit]Hi @Patient Zero and @Explicit,
I was surprised and a bit disappointed to see my personal userpage deleted.
I read WP:UPNOT and I think I understand why you thought I was using the page as a Web Host, but I hope there was a misunderstanding.
I created this page while at my first-ever Wikiconference, the recent gathering in Toronto this month. I was excited to learn about how to edit Wikipedia with @Ocaasi and @Sj, who do work with my non-profit organization, Hacks/Hackers. I figured that practicing on my own user page would be a low-stakes place to try things out.
Hacks/Hackers supports Wikicred misinformation grants like WP:CREDBOT, and other citation projects, because of the incredible importance of Wikipedia in quality information online. I am a journalist by training and care deeply about information and its role in healthy societies. I'm here to learn.
Please reply back and let me know what the best way forward is.

- Just confirming what User:Burtherman said this is all true. I was actually working with him on his userpage to practice formatting on his bio. Ocaasi t | c 20:44, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I have restored the userpage. The issue is particular is with the Bio section, which reads more like a list of accomplishments about the user's career with a sprinkling of non-neutral language, which does not help its case. ✗plicit 03:36, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Explicit is correct; the way your user page was written did make it seem more like a non-neutral CV. I have removed the "bio" section; as a result, the current revision of your user page is now acceptable. Do let me know if you have any further questions about editing! - @Patient Zero @Explicit Thanks for restoring the page, and for the comments and guidance. I still am confused - I can't say anything about my background and experience? Is the problem that it's written in the third person? This is my personal user page, which is by definition non-neutral, and I obviously wouldn't allowed to write an article page about myself. Burtherman (talk) 13:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- There is a steady stream of non-editors who make accounts solely to have a press-release style bio of themselves on the Internet, or a first-person homepage unrelated to wikipedia, and we have various guidelines to prevent that. To distinguish your userpage, it helps to write as though to a fellow editor; avoid promotional language; to have things related to your editing; to have items of curiosity and interest. [First persno is common, though I recall some funny user pages, perhaps no longer around, that are presented in the form of a WP biographical article, but with humorous anecdotes about the user and subversions of stylistic tropes of actual articles] – SJ + 05:50, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
