Articles for Deletion

helpmeWhere is the Wikipedia manual of style page located for writing responses to articles in articles for deletion?  Btilm  02:02, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Not MOS per se, but check out WP:Help, my article got nominated for deletion! Intelligentsiumreview 02:13, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
No. I mean when I am replying to someone. For example:

Delete. blah blah blah explanation

Keep. blah blah blah explanation

Is either one of those correct?  Btilm  02:36, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

That format is used by convention, it's nothing official. Note that the AfD process is a discussion, not a vote; the closing administrator will take into account the weight of policy-based arguments. Therefore, it is important to explain your reasoning with reference to policy. The 'standard format' (as I say, convention, not policy or law) is to put;
*Delete: I can't find significant coverage for this.~~~~

*Keep This is really cool! Example (talk ~~~~~

:Comment This is not a valid reason; please see WP:ILIKEIT. ~~~~

This would appear as;

Comment This is not a valid reason; please see WP:ILIKEIT.  Chzz  ►  03:36, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

If you wish to participate in AfD discussions, the best way to learn about it is simply to join in discussions - be bold, and have a try. You can always get there quickly by typing WP:AFD into the search box. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  03:36, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

manual of style

helpmeIn the Wikipedia Manual of Style, I did not see anything about the format of the article. For example, a Wikipedia article usually begins with the article topic in bold. Where is all of this located? Also, look above. When I typed :, my response only one paragraph. How do I make it indent on all paragraphs? Thank you.  Btilm  02:58, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

The first bit is called the lede, in wiki-speak,. (Sorry about all the silly abbreviations).
A leading colon only indents the sentence that it is on. You have to start each new paragraph with a colon, just like I have here, for example;

:The first bit is called the lede, in wiki-speak,. (Sorry about all the silly abbreviations).

:A leading colon only indents the sentence that it is on. You have to start each new paragraph with a colon, just like I have here, for example;

button

helpmeIf you look in archive 2, chzz showed me a way to make a button (thanks, chzz!) using the following code:

btilmnote = {

}
addOnloadHook( function() {
 btilmnote.btilmnoteGet();

	}
);

I want to make a new button. I want it to say "main" and I want it to link to user:btilm/top. How would I do it?  Btilm  04:05, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

}

addOnloadHook( function() {
 foobar.foobarGet();

I edit conflicted with Chzz as I often do (sometimes I think we're the only ones monitoring helpme and adminhelp and Chzz usually gets there first!) Anyway here's what I wrote: I restored it (and thereby its edit history which we need for attribution purposes), and moved it from the mainspace to your user subpage Chzz linked. Please only send it back to the mainspace after you have cited to reliable sources that verify the content and show notability, and please do so using the move tab rather than cutting and pasting it to a new title. You may be already well familiar with everything I just said, and the policies I just linked, but I try to anticipate issues, so if you're saying "duh", please know that no insult was intended:-) Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:21, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Heh, nice work, Fuhghettaboutit :-) Sorry about the edit conflict. I was just looking into this request (with stwalkerster (talk · contribs)), and when I saw the restore, I saved the done (assuming stw. had moved it back). Then realized it was your good self, but figured the message still made sense. Cheers!
Btilm, sorry I missed you on IRC just now; to answer - the reason that it was deleted was due to the lack of appropriate references. Now, maybe the XXLmag was a 'reliable source' - I'm not sure - but, with a proposed deletion, if nobody objects then the article can be deleted. Also, the mentions of this album in that source are really just 'passing mentions', which do not constitute 'significant coverage'. You'll need to find a couple of newspaper/magazine articles (not blogs) that are specifically about this album. Try this Google news search. Also, please read WP:NALBUM. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  01:15, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

article

helpmeOkay, guys. I think I am going to the B.O.S.S. album later. Now, I am doing this album. I need you to check it and make sure if the links are in the right place, what should and shouldn't be done, etc.... I am not worried about the lead paragraph at this time. Thank you.  Btilm  01:49, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Fair enough.
 • Re. B.O.S.S. - if in doubt, just ask before making live.
 • All articles require references to reliable sources, for two reasons; a) to pass notability guidelines, b) for verification. This is critical to any article - you must give references, to say where the information comes from. Otherwise, anyone could write anything. How can I 'prove' that this album exists? You need to cite a book, newspaper...something.
 • The album may not meet the notability requirements in WP:NALBUM - in this specific case, it might be better to just add to the article on the band. As it says in that link, "Album articles with little more than a track listing may be more appropriately merged into the artist's main article or discography article".  Chzz  ►  02:02, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

help

helpmePlease look at this page under subpages for this user. I have set the cellspacing to 0, but the cellspacing seems like it won't cooperate. How do I set the cellspacing to 0?  Btilm  21:24, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

The zero needs to be in quotation-marks, ie cellspacing="0"  Chzz  ►  21:38, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
P.S. For much more info on the subject, see Help:Tables.  Chzz  ►  21:39, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if you looked at the page, but is is in quotes.  Btilm  21:41, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
It wasn't when I looked. What, now, is the problem exactly? What do you want to do?  Chzz  ►  21:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Instead of cellspacing="0" try ;format=cellspacing="0" maybe? Fleetflame · whack! whack! · 21:55, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I think, perhaps, you're asking how to reduce the spacing between the displayed subpages? That will not be effected by changing the cell-spacing, because the entire output from the special: is in a single cell. I'll remove this helpme for now, as I think that probably answers - also, it has to be said, Wikipedia is not myspace - I can't see that improving your talkpage box is really going to improve the project, if you see what I mean. Good luck with it, and everything, but I'm off to edit articles instead. No offence intended, and I hope you understand. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  22:27, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

script

helpmeI am going to make a script that will help people perform a specific function only when a page is created. A have a few questions to ask about javascript in Wikipedia.

 1. In wiki, if I want to create a perimeter (I think that is the name), I type {}. When I transclude that page, I will put a pipe in the trancludesion, and the text after the pipe will replace "{}". How do I do this in javascript?
 2. In Wikipedia's javascript, is it possible to create a function that says something like "if this page exists, do this"? I know how to do the "do this" part, but how do I do the "if this page exists" part?

Thank you in advance.  Btilm  20:56, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Do you have any experience in JavaScript? If not, I suggest you start with parses and regular templates. The parse function for if a page exists is simply . However, I am not sure how one would do this in JS, but I am certain it would be much more difficult. Intelligentsiumreview 21:55, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
(second reply from  Chzz  ►  22:11, 9 October 2009 (UTC))
It is a parameter, not a perimeter. When you transclude a template, if the parameters are not named, they are indeed numbered 1,2,3. They are accessed by putting them inside triple curly brackets, as you say. The pipe is not directly related to the parameter, but instead, a pipe symbol separates the template name from its output. Consider this example;
I just wrote User:Btilm/param, which is just one line;
This template has been passed some parameters. The first is {}, the second is {} and the third is {}.
If I now put here, it looks like this; User:Btilm/param.
Regarding javascript, that is somewhat beyond the scope of 'helpme' - answering your question requires knowledge of that language, and if you wish to learn javascript, I suggest looking on the internet for tutorials or getting books on the subject. Answering in full would take many, many pages!  Chzz  ►  22:10, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

help

helpmeIf you view the source of Template:See_also, you will see stuff like {}. What does that mean. I know it is for where to put the and, but can someone explain it to me?  Btilm  02:10, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

{} is a call for a parameter. I don't think Wikipedia supports "and" expressions; you might want to take a look at Wikimarkup. Intelligentsiumreview 02:17, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Those refer to the parameters in the template call. {} refers to the first parameter. As an example, I could create a template (let's call it Template:example) with the text: "This template says {}." If I then transclude the template using example I would get the output:
This template says {}.
If however, I add a parameter to the transclusion, such as sausage, the output would be:
This template says sausage.
Additional parameters can be used with {}, {} etc. That is the most basic use of parameters - it can get much more involved and complicated. For example, the {} you mention is used in conjunction with an IF function, which tests if a parameter exists before trying to use it. Help:Magic words gives a brief overview of some of the other functions available. Regards, AJCham 02:27, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

help

helpmeI am going to create a tool that will benefit me and hopefully some other wikipedians. When I activate it, I want it to change something on a page. (edit conflict)

If you are referring to an on-wiki function, then there are two ways to achieve this sort of thing. The first method is to use a special URL format, such as;
[ Test link]
This is exactly the same as an external link to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Btilm&action=edit&preload=User:chzz/preloadtest&section=new but it will appear without the 'external link' icon, like this: Test link
It 'pre-loads' the test in the page user:chzz/preloadtest, in which I just wrote "hello".
This is documented in mw:Manual:Creating pages with preloaded text
The second option would be to use a java script in the user monobook - the gadgets WP:TWINKLE and WP:FRIENDLY both add tabs that allow you to post information on user pages without intervention. Perhaps the best way to learn about that would be to study the code for one of those, e.g. User:Ioeth/friendlywelcome.js - that script allows you to 'welcome' the user page that you are currently viewing. You would have to manually add that code to your own javascript page, which - if you are using the standard monobook skin - is User:Btilm/monobook.js.
With regards to external tools, there are a myriad of ways to automate Wiki editing, mostly using semi-automated programs such as auto-wiki browser, and fully-automated bots written in various programming languages.  Chzz  ►  00:11, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Tools

helpme Are there any wikipedia tools that warn you when a user posts a new section on the help desk, the village pump, etc...?  Btilm  23:28, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

There is your watchlist. Currently, what you ask is technically impossible, but might become possible if LiquidThreads is enabled (along with automatic signing, and being able to watch an individual thread). Xenon54 / talk / 00:39, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Wiki in javascript

helpmeI am writing a code that will tell me when there is a change at the Wikipedia help desk. It involves using wiki markup in a javascript page. Is that possible? This probably doesn't work, but the following is an example of what I want the code to look like.

This has to be done on my monobook.js page.

If this is not possible, please try to answer the following questions.

 1. Is it possible to transclude a Wikipedia page into a user javascript file?
 2. Is there a code in javascript to do something like the following:
if ({content on user:btilm}==2)
alert (content is 2)
else
alert (content is not 2)

Thank you so much for you help!  Btilm  01:14, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Effectively, you can't do it, because Wikipedia pages do not update dynamically - they are created when you load the page, and the only way to get new info is to referesh them. Hence, the current number of articles, for example, is held in the 'magic word' NUMBEROFARTICLES and is, currently, 6,908,973. That number will not change until you refresh this page.
Perhaps the best way to monitor help requests is simply to connect to the help IRC channel - you can connect with this, but if you get a more fully-featured IRC client, it's quite easy to have it alert you when help - see WP:IRC.
Your watchlist is another easy way to monitor for page changes.
Wikipedia pages themselves just aren't designed for advanced programming.  Chzz  ►  07:38, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

tab

helpmeIf you look at the above section, chzz taught me how to make a link. Is it possible to make a tab?  Btilm  21:24, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean by "link" and "tab"? Do you mean link as in this is a link? Intelligentsiumreview 22:48, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
I believe Btilm means a new tab along the top of the interface (ie Move, Watch, TB, Unlink, etc...). Is that correct Btilm? T34CH (talk) 00:48, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes. That is correct.  Btilm  00:50, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
You could check out the javascripts used by wp:Twinkle and wp:Friendly to see how they do it, but I don't know what special permissions they need for their scripts to work. T34CH (talk) 01:07, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
No special permissions are required to use custom javascript (AFAIAA), however, note that the tab would only appear for you (or others who use your script) - you wouldn't be able to add a tab to a page for all users. AJCham 02:59, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Speedy delete tag: Thomas Tomzak‎

Thanks for helping out with the new articles. However, you may have noticed that I have disputed the speedy tag on Thomas Tomzak‎, as I don't believe it falls under CSD A1. The context of the article is clear - it specifically states that the subject of the article is the mayor of a specific town. If you believe the article is too short (keep in mind it is a stub, though), the subject is not notable, or you have some other, non-CSD reason for deleting the article, you might want to consider proposing the article for deletion instead. Please note that the Orphan guidance states that the orphan tag should only be placed if an article has zero incoming links, although in any case the article now has 3 incoming links. Eldumpo (talk) 21:19, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

RFA

Hi Btilm,

I've removed your RFA from WP:RFA because it was malformed. In order to make a request, follow the directions at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate. You should mark the page you created for deletion as WP:CSD#G7, and file the new request at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Btilm (note the capitalization of your name). If you try to write over your old page at [[Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/btilm, I think some of the pre-written template magic will get messed up.

You might also reconsider the RFA; it appears to me that you might still be a little too new, and not have the experience that is typically needed at RFA. Take a look at a few recent successful and unsuccessful RFA's to get a feel for whether you agree or not. RFA can be a little brutal sometimes, and you don't want to go through it if the chances of passing are really small. Your decision, of course, but my advice would be to get several more months of experience under your belt. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:32, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
