Information icon Hello, I'm Donald Albury. Your recent edit(s) to the page Alachua, Florida appear to have added incorrect information, so they have been reverted for now. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. The pronunciation of 'Alachua' is different in the City of Alachua than it is in most of Alachua County Donald Albury 19:51, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You in fact are incorrect. I was born in Gainesville and have lived in Alachua for over 40 years. The ONLY people that call it "Alachua" are ignorant bumpkins. Just because some idiot in a Conestogas commercial calls it "Alachauay" doesn't mean that's how it is properly pronounced. BrunoP211 (talk) 01:18, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I have lived in Alachua County for only some 26 years total, but the first 12 years were from 1961 to 1974. I was told then that "a-la-chu-way" was the common pronunucuation throughout western Alachua County west of Gainesville. That pronunciation does seem to have retreated in most of western Alachua County, but the residents of the City of Alachua seem to take pride in keeping that pronunciation alive. None of what follows can be used in Wikipedia, but I have done some research on the origin of "Alachua", and wrote down my thoughts on the history of the pronunciation here. - Donald Albury 01:53, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I still live there and was raised there since the age of 2. You may have been told that, but that is how ignorant people choose to pronounce it. Any of us with higher than an 8th grade reading level don't choose to incorrectly pronounce it that way, we pronounce it properly. As a resident of the county and not the city, who are you to say? If you want to change the pronunciation given in the article, then you should start a discussion on Talk:Alachua, Florida. Note that I did not add the "ə-LATCH-oo-ay" pronunciation to the article, so there is at least one other editor who has supported that pronunciation. - Donald Albury 02:18, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
