Hello BlueStars83! Welcome to the English version of Wikipedia | |||
Thanks for your contributions so far, we hope that you will stay and that you will find the collaboration enjoyable. I stole this box from Worm That Turned, an editor who's been here a while. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that started in 2001 and is free for all to use and edit under certain guidelines and principles that all users must try and adhere to. Lots of these principles and guidelines are listed below. Click on the link next to the images for more information. | |||

Challenge
[edit]Challenge - Completed |
---|
This isn't related to the adoption by Dave, it's a separate challenge I thought up to see what you can do already. See what you can manage and remember there is no time limit. If you don't know then give it a try anyway and i'll offer my assistance. There's your first barnstar for completion of all 10. Good luck! ツ Jenova20 (email) 18:19, 3 September 2012 (UTC) 1) Edit Summary - It always helps to have an edit summary which explains what you did. Inappropriate edit summaries are no good to anyone and should be avoided. Most situations don't need an essay of a summary and are simply resolved with simple informative summaries, such as: "reply to so-and-so", "changed lede paragraph", "minor reword", "removed vandalism". Post one up here if you can.
2) WP:AGF - be careful not to be insulting or come across as aggressive or angry as this can result in a block if it is bad enough and it doesn't help with what Wikipedia is trying to achieve. Always act in good faith There's no real challenge to this, just give someone wikilove. Find a user and use the heart symbol at the top of the page to give them some love. Post the name of the user here.
3) First Link - Links join everything in Wikipedia together. by placing a webpage between these [] you can create a link. To create a link to an article then use the exact article name and two brackets like this: [[]]. Post one of each up if you can and if the link is red then it has a mistake somewhere.
4) First Edit - Make your first edit to an article and post up here the diff. Here's one I made earlier to show you an example [4] (Yes, i know mines to a usertalk page not an article).
5) Userbox - Find one and stick it on your userpage. Lots of users have them on their userpages. Mine are hidden so you won't find them easy. Let me know when you have one.
6) Vandalism - try and find vandalism in an article using the Recent changes option in the interaction section on the left of the page. This might take you a while but when you find one, which you believe to be vandalism post the article here and point out the edit you believe to be vandalism. It might help if you class edits in 3 ways: Helpful, Unhelpful and Vandalism. Stick to calling only vandalism vandalism and not unhelpful edits aswell since these could be made in good faith by well meaning people.
how about this one, 10 edits down, [7] - nope that's a helpful edit, which requires a reference because of Biography of a living person policy. Vandalism is deliberately harmful edits. Take a look at my example of a harmful edit again, which shows someone deliberately blanking a page and writing an insult. Keep trying ツ Jenova20 (email) 19:59, 4 September 2012 (UTC) i have my fingers crossed for this one! [8] - nope, he/she's perfectly entitled to blank his own user page. If that was an article you would have vandalism though ツ Jenova20 (email) 20:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC) I hope this ones gunna be right, this ones gone on too long for my liking, [9] - Hurray! Hopefully you understand the differences between the 3 types now? Vandalism is a purposefully damaging edit, while the other two types are either good or questionable ツ Jenova20 (email) 20:51, 4 September 2012 (UTC) 7) Upload - You've seen me do this enough times. If you have an image which can be used to improve a Wikipedia article then try and upload it using the correct copyright status and using the Upload file option in the Toolbox on the left of this page. When you've done that post a link to it here using the exact file name but starting with a colon (:) before the word "file" like so: File:Coca Cola Billboard.jpg. Again, if it's red then there's a mistake. 8) Citation - these are your proof. Wikipedia tends to favour proof over Truth and these should ideally be reliable sources (not Facebook or forums) and go directly after the statement they apply to and are visible at the bottom of the article under the heading "References". Add a reference for the below statement by finding a web page proving it and starting it with "<ref>" and finishing it with "</ref>" similar to how you did for linking earlier, only this time there's no brackets involved. It gets easier the more you do it.
9) Wikiproject - Choose one you like and join it. Just search for "Wikiproject " and type in an interest to find a project. Most require you to add your name to their member list somewhere on the main page. Post up the name of the project you joined so I can confirm it.
10) Talk Page Helper - Try and solve an issue someone is having on the Discussion page of an article if you can and post the difference here.

I believe if new editors get support from the "get-go" and see the friendly atmosphere and help they can so easily get with the know-how then they're more likely to stay and see the benefits rather than think they're on their own and get no help. Adoption
[edit]Hey BlueStars83! It looks like Jenova's running you through your paces very quickly, but I've managed to pop along to let you know that your personal adoption page is now up and about. It should hopefully give you a bit of an insight into the way things work around here. To get to it, just wander over to User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/BlueStars83. If there's anything you want to chat about, there's a talk page too. Otherwise, get in there, be bold, edit some articles! There's nothing to be scared of. WormTT(talk) 12:57, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
Your uploads
[edit]You may recognise one at the bottom here. Thanks for uploading it ツ Jenova20 (email) 23:19, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Merkin
[edit]...Yeah, maybe i won't refer to your nationality as A Merkin again after looking it up...ツ Jenova20 (email) 09:27, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Adoption interference
[edit]I'm not cheating or helping you cheat but trying to help you get thinking on this one since it's very important. It's called WP:Synthesis when you make stuff up which neither source says. Example:
- Reference 1 says plants are growing bigger, and reference 2 says meningitis rates are going up, can you combine them to say bigger plants cause meningitis or do you need another reference which specifically says bigger plants cause meningitis to add that?
Think about it...ツ Jenova20 (email) 08:21, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- It's a good example, I might keep that in mind. Either way, I've left a comment and a new lesson. So sorry about the delay, I hope you can let me off! WormTT(talk) 14:24, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

ThunderCats response
[edit]If you are talking about the character page for the ThunderCats, I have been keeping the Overall info on the Thunderians about the ThunderCats and other Thunderians where the Anonymous contributor has been moving it above the section for Claudus. I am saying that the overall info on the Thunderians should be over the entire sections dedicated to the Thunderians (except for the ones that are in the villains' section).
