[edit]IA Summit, Vancouver
[edit]Hi Fellow Wikimedians,
The 2017 Information Architecture Summit team is in Vancouver next month. We are planning a Wikipedia session on diversity and would like to invite local members of the Wikimedia Vancouver Meetup to participate. I am a member of the Wikimedia NYC chapter and am developing both informational and hands on sessions for conference participants. You would not need to have a conference ticket to attend these sessions. Please see below for information about the event and please let me know if you or any of your students or colleagues are interested in participating.

The IA Summit is an annual conference of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). It will be held at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver on March 22-26. We have two Wikipedia sessions planned. One on Saturday afternoon, March 25, will align with the theme of diversity in information architecture and UX design. It is tentatively scheduled for 3:30pm. We are still adjusting the schedule. We plan to invite speakers studying knowledge organization and information behavior in diverse populations. The Wikipedia Session will cover efforts by The Wikimedia Foundation to improve the creation and discovery of content about underrepresented groups. I'll be talking about Women in Red, Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Pride and AfroCROWD and will introduce Project: Information Architecture. It would be nice if someone from Wikimedia Vancouver were available to present the results of the Women in Science event this past Fall.
On Sunday, March 26, we will host a lunch session that will be a more traditional Wikipedia editathon. This will give attendees an opportunity to learn about editing, tools that may be useful to Information architects and knowledge professionals and also be a way to make a meaningful contribution to the encyclopedia.
Student volunteers and facilitators would be welcome to attend these sessions or help out at the Wikipedia table in the exhibit hall. This is a great opportunity for community engagement at one of the premier Information Architecture conferences.
I am reaching out to people who signed up for the Women in Science event via email and talk pages. If there are others you think might be interested, please let me know. We are also still seeking brief lightning talks on diversity and discovery.
