Burnley 1920-21 league positions

[edit]

Hi, I was just wondering where you sourced the league positions from (in the far-right column, shown after each match) in Burnley season 1920-21? League positions after each match would be very useful information to have if I could get the same for West Bromwich Albion (and other teams). Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 11:05, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you post what information you have for the above player from your records book, or alternatively add them to the article yourself. Thanks. Eldumpo (talk) 17:55, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Not a rant at you, but it strikes me as nonsense that a player in the first team squad of a team in the top tier of a national league should be deemed not noteworthy enough.

If it isn't too much trouble, could you you direct me to where this sort of policy is discussed/voted on.

The player in question is due to make an appearance for the first team next week. Gufcfan (talk) 00:54, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The guidelines are arbitrary and contrary to what most people seem to believe wikipedia to be about.

I see no point in making any further contributions to wikipedia knowing that some arbitary guideline will see it deleted the next time I look and to be honest, I have better things to do than argue the merits of it.

Mulege

[edit]

Trying to find the correct pages: Thanks BigDom for the warm welcome you gave me. I am an 'old' user of Wikipedia > just not on the English site. Anyway, thanks again. I hope I did a good job with correcting tha article about "Mulege". R U actually living in M. ? 1622AK (talk) 00:38, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

By the definition of WP:ATHLETE, most of the players in the League of Ireland do not pass this guideline. Gufcfan (talk) 22:01, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Football

[edit]

I don't believe there should be any special exception for the League of Ireland. I believe that in Wikipedia there should be no arbitrary exemptions on football players, clubs or leagues being added to Wikipedia. If the information can be referenced, I see no problem other than pedantry and too much desire to control the information from above.

So what if the players in the top Samoan league are present on wikipedia... that isn't a valid point.

Hi BigDom. I see you have withd your application. I hope you took my comments in the positive manner in which they were intended, and you can be reasonably sure that once you have diversified your contributions and and addressed the other issues, that I will support your next RfA which I very much hope you will make in due course. Dan Thomas date of birth

[edit]

Hello. Was wondering what your source was for the date of birth of Dan Thomas (footballer)? Because reference 4 from AFC Bournemouth's website talks about his turning 18 the month before he made his debut in October 2009, which seems the sort of thing they're not likely to get wrong. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 22:45, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You'd do as well changing your password and making sure you log out when leaving your PC unattended even for a few minutes, if you really think someone else is using your account. And keep a sharper eye on your mates :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:07, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are a few contributions round when Dan Thomas was edited which added unsourced dates and appearances to players, some of which are blatantly wrong. I've taken the liberty of reverting several of them: if any of them were your changes, and were in fact correct, then I apologise for my interference, and please re-add them with their source. You might want to have a look see if there are any more that need undoing. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:35, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks + a question

[edit]

Hi BigDom, firstly thank you for the welcome into the world of Wikipedians! The cookies were very tasty and I do intend to hang around. Now you said if I had any questions... On the 2009-2010 Premier Reserve League page, at the top, it mentions that the article does not cite any references or sources. How do I get that 'status' removed now that I have added some citations to the article in the past few weeks. Or does the status refer to specific elements of the article that need to be verified. All updates are always taken from the official club sites - which are linked at the bottom of the article - so I'm unsure of how the article could satisfy whichever wikipedia standard it is not currently conforming to. That is also bearing in mind that it is illegal to reproduce fixtures & results without licence from the Premier League. Bealzbob (talk) 10:41, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I hate to be a nuisance but, as a wiki-newbie, I am having difficulty a) differentiating between a reference and a citation (I've read the doc) and b) what in the Premier Reserve League page needs further referencing. Once I can get clarification on a citation as opposed to a reference then I'll hopefully be on my way! Bealzbob (talk) 22:15, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In this example (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti#The_End) there is a reference [3] and a citation [1] side by side. One points at the bottom of the page to an external link and the other (the citation) links directly to an external link. Apart from the visual and code difference within the wiki page, what is the actual functional difference between the 2 links? This is my difficulty at the moment. What distinguishes one from the other. What is stopping a wikipedian from making a citation from anything that could be a reference? Bealzbob (talk) 22:51, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For the sake of your sanity and mine I'm going to leave citations alone :) They've beaten me. As for the goalscorers table - this is data I have collated from every match report on each of the official website's throughout the season. Those tables exist nowhere else on the net as far as I know, so in that sense they can't reference anything to make them verifiable; though the data is easily provable if questioned. What is the wiki standard in a case like this to help clarify that point? Bealzbob (talk) 23:37, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi BigDom, I hope you don't mind; I have asked the citation question in the form of a 'helpme' on my chat page. Thanks for all your patience while trying to help me. Bealzbob (talk) 23:59, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi BigDom, re- synth, it's OK I had a good chat with helper Chzz last night and the concensus was that while the scorers table does fly pretty close to the wire, it is only a basic mathematical collation and not the synergising of 2 'arguments' to create a 3rd one. It is solely an addition of scorers that is both relevant to the article and easily verifiable. So I have the OK to continue it but with the one caveat that if it is challenged I must be able to verify it - which I can, easily. Thanks again for all your help Bealzbob (talk) 10:32, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BigDom, me again. A silly question this time :) There seems to be 2 kinds of dash (-) in wikipedia. A short one and a longer one and I don't seem to be able to specify which one I want wiki to use when I input said dash. How do I do it? Bealzbob (talk) 20:08, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the prompt response :) Bealzbob (talk) 20:20, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Vandalism. Hi BigDom, The user JamesH1381 has just vandalised the 2009–10_Premier_Reserve_League page with loads of erroneous results. I am in the process of trying to rectify it but can someone please stop him from doing further damage?
Just a note, I've had it resolved Bealzbob (talk) 18:07, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note - I'm glad that your record books tie up with mine. I plan to expand the article in the next few days and will put a note on the talk page about the discrepancy regarding his date of birth. Cheers. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 11:28, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's everything. One other thing. I noticed that you altered the dashes in the article, but unless I've misunderstood, I thought endashes should be used for date ranges and page ranges as it says here. Also, other cricket articles seem to follow this rule. However, it's possible I'm being a little dim! Just wanted to check, as I may put this article up for FA at some point, and this would be a big issue. Cheers. --Sarastro1 (talk) 21:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello again. Please could you add to the article the source you used for Trevor Tainton's date and place of birth and height. thanks, Struway2 (talk) 08:50, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oops!! Sorry about that, I really should be more careful. But if you have access to allfootballers, I wonder if you could do me a favour. There's a player called William Lees, aka Walter Lees and Don or Donald Lees, who played for Celtic and Lincoln in the 1890s and, according to Joyce's book, went on to play for Darwen and Barnsley. Could you look him up and see if Mr Joyce and his contributors still think all these names belong to the same man? There's no real reason why they shouldn't, I suppose, but I can't find anything online to join them up... thanks, Struway2 (talk) 09:24, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's pretty much what the book says. Still seems an excessive number of first names for one man... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:36, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello. It would seem likely that Hugh Robertson (1890s footballer) is the same bloke that List of Burnley F.C. seasons has as top scorer in 1895–96 as the redlink Hugh Robertson (English footballer) Though Joyce's book thinks he's a Scotsman. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:36, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for taking your time out and reviewing my page. From what I know we have no independent sources other than our own, the reasoning behind that is due to the uniqueness of the website and the face that we are one of a kind. So with this dilemma does that conclude we will not be allowed a page on Wikipedia? Also I made the graphic myself; we are working on making it copyrighted though it will be under my name. If there is any way you can help me make this work I would greatly appreciate it. Jaymann220 (talk) 21:15, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stats and a sentence or so duly added. I've also changed the club's name as used in the article, as (contrary to what some sources claim) 1912-13 was the first season in which the club played under the name Gillingham. This is confirmed by the club's official centenary history book, which reproduces programmes from that season which show the new name. The confusion arises because the change of name was not actually officially ratified by the shareholders until the end of the season, for reasons unknown...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:40, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go

[edit]
First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.

We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns.

See you at the finish!

[edit]

Just a note to say thanks for the GA review for 1885–86 West Bromwich Albion F.C. season - I like what you did with the lead as well. There's potentially more I could do with the article (by combing through newspaper archives etc) but I'm happy that the coverage is good enough for GA, which will suffice for now. I will review another GA nomination from the list as soon as I get chance. Thanks again. --Jameboy (talk) 21:08, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

[edit]
GAN backlog elimination drives chart up to 1 May

On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.

  • 661 total nominations were reviewed. 541 of them passed (~81.8%), 97 (~14.7%) failed, and 23 (~3.5%) ended on hold.
  • The WP:GAN page started at 110,126 bytes length on 1 April and ended at 43,387 bytes length at the end of 30 April (a 66,739 byte reduction in the page, about 60.6% less).
  • Excluding extremes, the longest wait for someone's GAN to be review was about 11.5 weeks at the beginning. (I mistook the figure when I reported to the Signpost that it was 13.) At the end, with the exception of one that was relisted, the longest wait is now at 10 days.
  • 63 different users participated, each having completed at least one GAN, with others also having helped out behind-the-scenes in making the drive a success.
  • The drive started with 463 GA nominations remaining and 388 unreviewed. At the end of the month, we ended with 89 remaining (374 or about 80.8% less) and 47 unreviewed (341 or about 87.9% less).

For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia.

I added an alt hook. Joe Chill (talk) 20:07, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably thinking by now that I've absolutely mullered your lovely GA, and perhaps I have. I've spent time on it though because I think it's important to set a standard for others to follow. There are obviously lots of potential "season" articles to come, but if they're even half as good as this one they'll be worthy additions to the encyclopedia. Malleus Fatuorum 00:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Au contraire, I think what you've done has been great. Like you say, if we can get this up to a level for all other season articles to aspire to, that can only be a good thing. I think it's about time one of these season articles reached FA, and there's no reason why it can't be this one. BigDom 05:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And there's more. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:59, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know when you're done pruning The Times citations and I'll go through and add urls for them. All you need to do for sources like that is to warn the reader that a subscription may be required, by adding the {{subscription required}} template, for instance. Malleus Fatuorum 13:40, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Bad luck, it looks like the article didn't make it this time.[5] That one oppose was obviously problematic, but if you can get that sorted over the next couple of weeks the renomination ought to be a walk in the park. Malleus Fatuorum 17:14, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dom, have you heard any more about when this site may be up and running again? Eldumpo (talk) 22:12, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update. They ought not to make it too long though, been as people are paying subscriptions to it. Eldumpo (talk) 22:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Niort CFA Groupe C "champions"

[edit]

I notice that you are a big contributor towards anything or anyone associated with Chamois Niortais. I just wanted to point out that Niort are not the "champions" of the group which they have won as you stated in the Arnaud Gonzalez article. They are merely of winners of the group. The champions of the CFA is the club that finishes with the most overall points regardless of group. Just wanted to point that minor detail out.Joao10Siamun (talk) 04:38, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

rlfoot.fr. Pretty informative, however, depending on the player, caps and goals may be incomplete. In Gonzalez's case, the site updated his and the team's U-19 stats until the completion of the UEFA U-19 Championship, which is when they last played, which means the stats are complete. Regarding Niort, considering that they have the resources to be playing at least in Ligue 2, winning a fourth division group shouldn't be a feat : P. Hi. Some time ago, you reviewed Douglas Jardine for GA. The article is currently at FAC, with a review here. I wondered if you would have time to make any comments. Thanks! --Sarastro1 (talk) 10:46, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He isn't listed in my Roy Calley book (either in the player list or in the 1957-58 season pages). That's not to say he didn't make an appearance, however, judging by Calley's reliability. I'll enquire with the club historian. - Dudesleeper talk 13:54, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

[edit]

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. monosock 18:07, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I getting this message? Mono's delivery method is random, so you probably showed up somewhere Mono went. :)

Scared of zombies?

[edit]

Hi there DOM, VASCO here,

I noticed you sent a message regarding a wrong move by User:Zombie433. I also noticed he did not reply, and removed your message after ONE minute (!). Well, just so you know, he does it 99,9999999% of the time (he answers when he wants to, to his compatriots - he comes from Germany), treating WP like his private site.

I have tried to talk to him about his poor English and incredible overlinking - politely - he did the same to me. Then i had the idea of arranging some German user to translate a message to him, but then i realized he just does not care (he is not a level 4 of English as his userpage suggests, his English is appalling), because in this "global age" we live in, almost EVERYBODY can understand basic English, which was the tone i wrote my messages in.

Any suggestions on what we can do (i have contacted several users, and everytime their suggestion was that the only thing we could do was clean up after his mess, nothing more)? Cheers, from Portugal - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 16:28, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have a solution of my own: i am not going to put him on a watchlist or something, that would be too strenuous; however, should i come across any of his "contributions" (a GREAT possibility, as he edits mainly on soccer, as do i), i'll "UNDO", simple as that. He has no respect for other people, why should we? Cheers too - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 22:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Give it a go. If you don't fancy it, just ask, and it can be removed. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 16:22, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

He is not in the book so it's 0 games or second division (I didn't check) Do you know the name of the Swedish club Gilbert Richmond managed in the late 40's before he came to Holland and when exactly was it. I have a problem with conflicting sources one says he started with Heracles in 1948 another one says 1949. I haven't bought the Nelson book yet. Cattivi (talk) 21:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manchester United F.C.

[edit]

Hi. I was just wondering whether, if you get the chance, you could take a look at this article? You opposed it at FAC, and I think I've made the appropriate changes, but I don't want to waste people's time if its not ready. Thanks, Tom Tom 16:13, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I can probably find the time to have a look soon. To be honest, Manchester United do not interest me in the slightest but anything to improve the encyclopedia is good. BigDom 16:14, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was offended by your comment on wikiproject football talk as i do perform edits myself.I was only asking why it said that.if i knew what was wrong I WOULD change it.Gobbleswoggler (talk) 15:43, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, but if you were offended by that you need to invest in a load of cotton wool for the rest of your life. Run along back to your vandal fighting now. BigDom 16:12, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just improved this using the sources found at its AfD, and thought you might want to take a look as you were the main one arguing for its deletion. What do you think? Alzarian16 (talk) 09:29, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re:sockpuppet

[edit]

It was to do with that Jamen fella (now banned as a confirmed sockpuppet of someone else). Nothing worth digging up.

As for your comment about headway, I think we're starting to make some personally. Rhys Taylor was closed as an AfD keep, on the grounds of passing the GNG. As the nominator you clearly disagreed with that conclusion, but it's nonetheless significant that he was kept in spite of failing ATHLETE. If Gavin Massey closes as an AfD delete, it really would force the project to take a long, hard look at how much weight Keep/Delete per ATHLETE/NSPORTS !votes carry, if indeed they carry any. --WFC-- 10:44, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

my rfa, q6

[edit]

Howdy. I think that my answer to Q6 at my RfA may have been misinterpreted, and I have posted a clarifying statement on that.

It seems to me that the meaning you seem to have taken from it is far from the meaning I meant, and I'd guess that's a matter of my not having written clearly. I understand this won't change your vote (your admin criteria rule me out, and that's cool), but I would prefer to be "heard" correctly. Please let me know if I can clarify. Thanks for your consideration. --je deckertalk 14:27, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure a book like this doesn't exist. You might find some stats in old handbooks, but these would almost certainly include cupstats. Cattivi (talk) 16:53, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
