Rugby Union

[edit]

Thanks for the words of support. Once you get your head around the notability issue, you can get some good work done. Some nice work from your good self too, especially on the Lions. I hope you approve of some of the layouts I placed over your original work, I basically mimiced other rugby sites to try and create uniformity. If there's any rugby field you would like me to look into please drop me a note, I've almost finished the 1905 Welsh team verses the All Blacks and wondering where to go next. Cheers FruitMonkey (talk) 20:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Title of Lions tours

[edit]

I've had the identical thought you are having. I've created the page 1980 New Zealand rugby union tour of Wales, a tour of just 7 games with two in North America. On one hand it feels I'm ignoring the American teams, on the other hand it makes for a stupidly long page title if I include them. I'm presently sticking with the main country toured, ie the most matches played, but I'm sure if we offend people they will challenge it.

Dual-code internationals

[edit]

Thanks for that inf on those Wallaby debut dates. I write on DCIs. Arthur Daniels is a Welshman who is classified as such but the article only refers to a RL career. Can you confirm if he played RU internationally and when he debuted. Rgds -Sticks66 14:42, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When you say he didn't play a full international do you mean that he didn't play a Test ? Or do you mean he didn't wear the Welsh national colours at all ? Rgds -Sticks66 06:49, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

English DCIs

[edit]

Most kind of you. Yes please Could I get the RU International : Test debut date, opposition and venue for John Bentley Andy Farrell Ray French, Barrie-Jon Mather. And does this book of yours also have dates for players RL Int'l debut ? -Sticks66 12:54, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thnx. New Zealand played a single Test against Scotland in Edinburgh in 1905. Does your book say what field was the venue ? The scrum.stats site says "tba". -Sticks66 03:43, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The 'tests' were at these venues

Fiji 19 7 20/05/1979 National Stadium, Suva Tour Match England

All Black Tests

1927-28 Waratahs tour

[edit]

Thx. Trust no-one in the RU project minds that I've incorporated that match result format we use in WP:RL (most consistently we use it in our SoO series articles like here). Maybe it's going over the top but I'm contemplating doing full team line-ups for the 5 Tests of the Tour. Do any existing RU arts show a format that's been adopted for such line ups? -Sticks66 23:42, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That 1980 Lions article is impressive. I was actually contemplating a side by side vertical line-up such as here NRL season 1999 or when used for a series it looks like SoO 2006. But actually I've always liked that horizontal format as per SA 1906 & it's very neat and discrete when the small font is used. So I might go that way. -Sticks66 02:28, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Irish rugby edits

[edit]

Cheers for the kind words. I’m not an expert but know a little and I am willing to have a go and help improve articles when I can. Just expanded University College Cork RFC article. You can always ask about names and I'll try my best to help. Djln--Djln (talk) 20:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would’nt worry too much about editing Ireland rugby articles when it comes to politics. I’ve yet to come across anything overly political. However if you what to see some conflicts, try editing articles on Irish soccer ! That can be a real minefield. Several Irish rugby clubs were formed by ex-college students because it was these colleges that developed the game. When students graduated there were not many clubs to join so they had to form their own. In Ireland university teams, in all sports, often play at quite a senior level and in national leagues rather then separate university leagues. The most notable example is University College Dublin A.F.C. who play in the top level of the national soccer league and have even represented Ireland in European competition. Even UCC RFC or more then just an average student team. They play in the national league and while playing for UCC, players have been capped, not only by Ireland but also by the Lions. Djln--Djln (talk) 22:29, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is a bit of confusion when it comes to clubs/colleges in the All Ireland league. Some college teams are exclusively for students whereas others are open to all and others have conditions. For example Trinity College Dublin only lets current students play (it may let graduates play also). UCC traditionally only let current students play but to my knowledge it is now an 'open' club...i.e. any college graduate may play. This was done in order to maintain their competitiveness in the AIL (poor school exam results meant less and less students were actually going to college – therefore less were playing on the rugby teams). The University of Limerick is completely open and lets anyone play. Again, this was done to increase their competitiveness by amalgamating the college team with the nearby 'Bohemians' rugby team to form 'U.L Bohemians'. On the whole, they are all 'clubs' that compete in the All Ireland league but each has different and varying connections to their original status as 'pure' college (or intervarsity) teams.

I hope this has helped clarify.MrShovels (talk) 10:28, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think that would be correct. To my knowledge a 'Mick English' did play for the British and Irish Lions on that tour whilst being a Bohemians RFC player. I'm not 100% sure when the amalgamation took place between The University of Limerick and Bohemians RFC but it was close to the 1990's so I would think it correct to maintain the link to 'Bohemians RFC' as opposed to 'U.L Bohemians RFC'.

Again, I hope this helps.--MrShovels (talk) 10:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand tours of South Africa

[edit]

What do you think of these tours (Only '28 and '49 are done)

Reggie Gibbs

[edit]

Yeah, hell of a player. It's incredible how much the past is forgotten, it appears to be natural in all sports though. In rugby everyone in Wales talks about Williams, Edwards, Morgan and John but forget about the people that did the same in the past. And lets face it, with modern competition and travel, players these days probably pick up three caps for every one that was once collected in the early 1900s. I'm sure you've seen it in horse racing; the fact that people fly, so one day in Ireland the next in Arabia, sod the guys that road the Derby with a broken leg in 1913. Sorry... off on one there. Also you were bang on with the 17 tries, the 18th was the British Lions. Thanks again FruitMonkey (talk) 20:55, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

British Lions

[edit]

The name 'Lions' was first used by journalists to describe the British team in 1924, taken from a motif from the players' ties. That could explain the fact that Lions stuff was bouncing around before 1950. In 1949 the four Home Nations agreed to tour as an official combine. I now have a copy of Griffiths' book, and I see where you are coming from. What I would like to see is a programme or other such like fron the 1930s. Maybe I'll check rugbyrelics. Totesport Bowl

[edit]

I didn't know about the Whitbread Gold Label Cup! My info comes from both the 1990/91 Ladbrokes Companion ("Martell Cup Chase - First run in 1984"), and the Aintree Grand National Media Guide:

"The totesport Bowl, previously the Betfair Bowl and the Martell Cup, was first run in 1984. It was designed as a consolation prize for horses who were unable to run or were beaten in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, and looked like providing just that at the very first attempt.
Drumlargan, who had been third to Burrough Hill Lad at Cheltenham, started at odds-on and came to the final fence in front. He then made a horrendous mistake which resulted in Frank Codd losing his irons and enabled Tom Taaffe to seize the initiative on Royal Bond. The Arthur Moore-trained 11-year-old became the first of the three winners trained in Ireland up to now."

I'll see if I can find out more about the previous race. – Zafonic (talk) 06:28, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment. I have been writing a few articles about rugby outside the "usual suspects" (!), and frequently one comes across strange facts.

You've actually inclined to put this up for "Did you know?" tomorrow! --MacRusgail (talk) 19:15, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've had an interest in the "rest" for a number of years, probably partly because I toured in Holland many years ago, and also because obscure stuff can be fun sometimes. To be honest, I didn't know too much about many Tier 3 nations (bar Spain, and Georgia), and the rest was even hazier (except Hong Kong and Dubai, perhaps, because of the sevens tournament)

I also reckon if rugby is going to be taken seriously internationally it's going have to have a wider spread. I think we may well see sevens in the Olympics soon.--MacRusgail (talk) 19:38, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. "I'll admit I don't exactly understand what the fivefold expansion rules means; do you think it qualifies?" - The 5x thing is an accident, I've never used the template before! (If the Lions article doesn't get in, maybe East Africa might do the trick)

Cardiff Arms Park

[edit]

This is a bit of an interesting one, but to cut to the point, the National Stadium was the used name before 1984. The book being referenced throughout, The Story of the Development of the National Rugby Ground appears to be an officially sanctioned WRU booklet, but I do not believe the 'official' opening tag. In Fields of Praise, David Smith writes "The celebration game between the President's XV and an Invitation XV, assembled by Sir William Ramsay of the R.F.U., that marked the official opening of the Ground in 1970, ..." The fact that anyone could build a nice new spanking Ground, be Secretary of the WRU, and then not officially open the ground until 14 years later when the last terrace goes up seems inconceivable. You would want to take the credit on your watch. I think there is a difference between officially opening and officially completing the site. The Guinness book of Rugby facts (1981), which lists all the International Rugby teams in the World at that point, lists Wales’ main stadium as “National Stadium, Cardiff”. I think we can safely call the National Stadium as of its use in 1970, though the Arms Park had been operating as the Welsh National Stadium as of 1955.

If I had more modern books I may be able to pin it down more accurately, but I get nauseous if I pick up a rugby book past 1984. ;) FruitMonkey (talk) 09:11, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

John Dyke

[edit]

I'm fairly sure on this one. The Who's Who of Welsh rugby has him down on all the teams I've listed but not Cardiff. Penarth RFC have him down as one of theirs and he captained the team fron 1905-07. His brother Len played for Cardiff and that is in the Cardiff Rugby History and Statistics 1876-1975, but not John. FruitMonkey (talk) 18:39, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cambridge University

[edit]

There is a need to look at all the players, I just wanted to start a more defined list. The problem is, that between the two Universities they have clocked up something like 500-600 notable players, the majority internationals. I'm not really sure where to start, as if we have a third category stating 'Other notable players' we are back to square one. Maybe if I add a section to the article itself discussing other notable players, it then requires other people to add to the section rather than keep adding to a list? Any thoughts? FruitMonkey (talk) 21:35, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do my best to sort it out. ...but on another point, I know the worlds of horse racing and rugby union rarely meet, but I've discovered an early Irish player who bred a 100-1 Grand National winner in 1928. I thought it would be an easy link, but the horse's page didn't exist. I'm surprised at how many red links there are in the world of horse racing, I suppose it shows how much in its infancy Wikipeida is. FruitMonkey (talk) 09:17, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you wouldn't mind, could you check your book for the name of the owner of "Kilijaro" who was bred in Ireland in 1976 and raced there until being sold to Serge Fradkoff who brought him to race in France. Kilijaro won the 1978 Phoenix Stakes. I think he was trained by Dermot Weld. Thanx again. Handicapper (talk) 17:31, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Call for consensus/conclusion to current Ireland rugby union team icon

[edit]

Hello, I am contacting you because you have been an active participant in the recent discussion on icon to be used for Ireland rugby union. I have tried to summarise the many strands and come to a conclusion based on what I perceive the consensus to be in this section - Summary of Ireland Flag discussion and suggested consensus conclusion. To move the issue to a conclusion I am asking all participants who have signed the discussion to read my summary and comment on the validity of the approach I have advocated, before the issue goes cold. I am keen that the enormous efforts of all contributors results in a tangible conclusion on this occasion.Kwib (talk) 16:40, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've not participated in this discussion (being unaware of it; my fault for not knowing about WP:RU) but thanks to all involved for addressing this issue. It's been annoying me for ages, that no apparent consensus had been reached anywhere. Well done, all. Tonywalton Talk 01:25, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments about the article and thank you also for raising the inconsistencies. These stem from a lack of proof reading in the final stages. I have looked into each and rewritten accordingly-

The article mentions three unrelated Browns from the Gala club taking part, but I can only see two listed in Scotland's squad, is there another one who needs listing?
It seems that Ken Oliver, also of Gala, was named in the program (my primary source for squads) but did not play. Arthur Brown was the player on the day.
(In addition I have added a note on primary source being the program)
And the article also describes the tournament starting with a shock in England's win over Wales, when the match listing shows this as the final pool games.
Again, the programme lists the England Wales match as the final pool game, but it may be that on the day this was played first. However, I am not sure which is correct and so have reworded to the effect that it was a shock result, but I have said it happened in the group stage. Time not specified.

Once again. Many thanks.Kwib (talk) 22:46, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again for your comments. I only became aware of the tournament when researching the 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens and I like bringing these notable but sometimes obscure nuggets to the fore. Thanks for the heads up, though I have seen the book. I'm waiting for it to come up for a few quid on eBay. There's a great quote from Norman Biggs in there, so I will hunt it down. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:46, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's the one. You see starchy photos of these Victorian rugby players and you forget that they pretty much had the same sense of humour and enjoyment for the after match entertainament as we have today. The cite would be great. FruitMonkey (talk) 20:21, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mockeridge

[edit]

Hey Bcp, I see you reverted an entry about Lawrence McKenzie Mockeridge (no article) done by {user 93.96.109.162} on this article. May I take it that the entry he has done on List of dual-code rugby internationals is also bogus ? -Sticks66 07:52, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

St. George's Park, Port Elizabeth

[edit]

Sorry... I only know it for its current cricket usage. The "Boet Erasmus" ground was the traditional home of Eastern Cape Rugby, at least in the last few decades. Have never heard of the Crusader/s in SA, only in the modern NZ Superrugby franchise sense. Hope you manage otherwise! - Sahmejil (talk) 08:42, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Horseracing in Wales

[edit]

Doh... Thanks for the update. I was thinking of actually starting a Horse racing in Wales article. Do you think it's a goer? FruitMonkey (talk) 20:25, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's a start, and it's not a stub. Though I know nothing about trainers and breeders. Any help would be appreciated. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:56, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but Dick Francis will probably get more hits than the Horseracing article; not that it really matters. Thanks again for the Dick Francis add to the article, it made the DYK so much easier. FruitMonkey (talk) 20:28, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

[edit]

Thanks for your welcome! I won't be around for a while after today, but I wouldn't rule out a more sustained return at some point. -- Zafonic (talk) 10:57, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Griffith's Book of England International Rugby

Thanks for this recommendation. I will look into getting this book. Thanks also for the welcome amendments to England rugby union try record progression.Kwib (talk) 00:51, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Barry Holmes

[edit]

It's a good hook for a DYK, I'd go for it. Thye fact that he died from typhoid fever, just two months after returning to Argentina, is fairly interesting too. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:59, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Authorized Article

[edit]

I have just read the Authorized (horse) article and saw that you did a lot of the work on it. I have been working on a Notnowcato article and it's interesting to compare the accounts of the 2007 Eclipse. In my article I've referenced a piece from the Guardian about Ryan Moore's strategy which might be useful- http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/jul/08/horseracing.news Tigerboy1966 (talk) 00:07, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Purse

The total prize fund for a race is available from several places. On the Racing Post website it can be seen on a racecard by clicking on the "conditions" box. If you want to find a prize fund after the day of the race, try searching the archive at sportinglife.com. - Zafonic (talk) 18:20, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fact-check

[edit]

Thanks for spotting the Clive Brittain error in the Terimon article. Of course you are correct. I have checked the sources I used I can't find where I got "East Ilsley" from. btw I haven't been able to find out Terimon's current status. He was still covering mares at Shade Oak in 2007, and he definitely isn't doing so this year, but that's all I can find.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 21:58, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And another good spot on Manna. A cut & paste error this time.Tigerboy1966 (talk) 10:20, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Simon Clarke

[edit]

Hi. The books states "Simon Clarke, most capped England scrum half of the day, until my old friend Steve Smith took the record off him many years later""simon+clarke". You are right though, Dickie Jeeps does appear to have held the record. I've removed the statement from Clarke's article. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 00:39, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Long overdue barnstar

[edit]
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
For Bcp67 who is probably the most important contributor to Thoroughbred racing: every race, every update, every winner etc; and all this for an editor whose main interest is Rugby- unbelievable!. Tigerboy1966  20:43, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pebbles

[edit]

No problem. I'll make it my next target. I've scaled down my contributions lately (got a job), but I can get it done in the next week or so. I have the Timeform annuals from 1983, 1984 and 1985 (the only three I have alas). I seem to remember that they were quite unflattering in '83, saying something along the lines of, "Pebbles is a small, sparely-made filly who is unlikely to make much further improvement": I think the term "lol" would be an appropriate.  Tigerboy1966  20:39, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article is coming along nicely: not finished yet. V. nostalgic experience: this was the era that really got me hooked on Flat racing. Pebbles, Ardross (my hero), Time Charter, Teenoso, Rainbow Quest, Chief Singer, Oh So Sharp, Commanche Run etc.  Tigerboy1966  15:38, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It looks excellent, thank you. I'm from a similar era, maybe a year or two later although Chief Singer was one of my favourites too, and I was also lucky enough to see Dancing Brave a couple of times. --Bcp67 (talk) 17:56, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I never saw Dancing Brave in the flesh. My local course is Haydock Park so I got to see lots of great sprinters like Habibti, Soba, Committed etc The best race I ever witnessed was the 1990 Sprint Cup: Dayjur vs Royal Academy. I also got to see great chasers like Silver Buck and Burrough Hill Lad. I hope I haven't been stealing any of your thunder today; I have been hovering over the keyboard to update the Newmarket results.  Tigerboy1966  14:58, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely not! Am always happy for anyone to update results, in the interests of keeping them as up to date as possible! The Pebbles article looks great. Some great memories there, although for some reason I drifted right away from the flat in the late 90s. --Bcp67 (talk) 17:50, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Folkestone racecourse

[edit]

Am I not reading the story by the BBC correctly, or is their reporting unclear. BBC said the course had closed, didn't they? Mjroots (talk) 18:38, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I say give it the weekend to allow things to become clearer. I read the BBC article as meaning it had already closed. Mjroots (talk) 19:04, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bleddyn Williams

[edit]

According to Wales-on-Line "The 86-year-old from Taffs Well, near Cardiff, died earlier this month at Holme Tower in Penarth."

There is a Holme Tower hospice in Penarth, but I don't think there is a Holme Tower in Cardiff.

Thanks for the note about the Sangster page –it still needs some tidying I think. I've just ordered the Horsetrader book, so I was thinking there might be more information to add.Dalmeny (talk) 22:38, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dewhurst

[edit]

LOL I had the Dawn Approach article in sandbox ready to go and had included the Dewhurst Stakes among his wins. The big question now is whether he goes to Dubai or stays in Ireland. Judging from Sheikh Mohammed's post race interview, he stays with Bolger. I have to get a Reckless Abandon article sorted out as well.  Tigerboy1966  14:15, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

West Wales XV.

[edit]

Hmmm, West Wales. A tricky one. The only thing I've written so far was a brief mention on Rugby union in Wales in 1929. The formation of the WWRU. Can you tell me which tourist they may have faced. I may be able to dig something else up. Regards. FruitMonkey (talk) 07:47, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
