[edit]My eyes hurt after attempting to read that. I think that editor deserves a block for at least 24 hours, something along the lines of "major disruption to servers, defamation of article; implications of illegal activity, implications of Wikipedia condoning such uploads, etc." Sounds legal enough, so I'll make the WP:AIV. --Jay (Reply) 02:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism warnings
[edit]I saw on User talk:66.29.30.110 you warned the user first with {{bv}}, and then again with {{test4}}, and I was wondering why. If a vandal is becoming too troublesome, or continues vandalizing after 4 {{test}}s, 2 {{vw}}s, or 1 {{bv}}, you can just report them to Vandalism in Progress or the Administrator's Noticeboard on incidents. I have blocked the user for 24 hours for inserting racial slurs into Black (people), and if he pops up again, give me a holler. Anyways, happy editing, and thanks for reverting the vandalism. -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 05:51, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm aware of that — I just try to give most people the benefit of the doubt if I can, so even though he was pretty blatant I figured two warnings wouldn't be a bad thing anyway. Thanks for the help! --bbatsell | « give me a ring » 06:00, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Assistance with an upset associate
[edit]A friend has asked me for help concerning the Talk page for the Wikipedia article about his company. Some unknown man has written a diatribe about how terrible the company operates. It is a subjective rant from someone that appears to have had a bad experience with the Boston Lyric Opera. No one is sure who he is, but he continuously tries to post misinformation and opinion on the article and Talk pages.
Can you point me to a help page that deals with preventing these sorts of events?

RE: Revision as of 08:29, 22 December 2005
[edit]I feel your so-called "un-edit" was in error. The removed portion accurately describes Sony Online Entertainment. If you want to remove something, try the portion at the bottom about "thousands of people cancelling their accounts." Because that is both fabrication AND speculation.
- For reference, the edit in question. Adding a quote from HHG to the top of an article is a copyright violation, for one. It also wasn't relevant to the article. If you wish to request a source for the claim that you say is fabrication, feel free. --bbatsell | « give me a ring » 08:44, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Fisheaters
[edit]The links are being reinserted, but on a more selective basis. I am reverting them and putting messages on the Talk pages. I don't discount the possibility of relevance, but there is nothing to persuade me that this site is an authority. - Just zis Guy, you know? [T]/[C] AfD? 13:08, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- I have a question — has anyone recommended to this guy to keep links to the articles related to Traditionalist Catholicism? Aside from it being blatant linkspam, I imagine this is another reason for some users' concern and dissension. A link to a quite extensive web site with tons of information on Traditionalist Catholicism would in my opinion work perfectly on Traditionalist Catholic, and I would hope it would stay there if anonymous shut down his campaign against ALL other religious articles. O'Reilly
[edit]I propose an even money bet of $1000 that O'Reilly describes himself as a journalist, just as Anderson Cooper does, the only difference being on Wikipedia where they get different descriptions. Am not sure of the status of the class action, but I don't doubt it would succeed based on what I've seen in terms of systemic failure and bias. Fluterst 13:43, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Class action lawsuit against Wikipedia
[edit]If - and a big if I grant you - the lawsuit were filed and successful, and Wikimedia unable to pay then Wikimedia's assets would be sold off with the possibility then of the pursuit of individual contributors to defamatory articles and also board members of the organization and others playing administrative or decision making roles. Just because it's online doesn't mean normal laws don't apply. They certainly do. Fluterst 13:47, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Limited liability
[edit]I very much doubt that would help those directly involved if a judgment was unable to be satisfied. Free legal advice is worth what you pay for it though. I think the music industry have proved just how the courts are catching up with unlawful activity online (and hitherto presumed anonymous) and I hope Wikipedia and the folks using it are taking notice. I don't know how active you are in all this but I think all who are very active should seek legal advice as to their potential liability both in terms of legal fees and damages. Homes could be lost over all this. Fluterst 13:56, 27 December 2005 (UTC) PS Try Chris Wallace (journalist)
Voting - Horace Walpole - Consensus building using curious methods

Wooten Page
[edit]Hey, I just came across your Victor Wooten entry, and there's a few things missing. At least in the last paragraph. Victor learned the slapping technique from his brother at a young age, about the time he was five according to several interviews of him that I have seen. So, it really doesn't make sense to say that "a new standard of basses" would contribute to this, since he and a few other bassists had been working on this technique for quite some time, regardless of instrument quality.
Also, Bass Extremes is purely a Wooten and Steve Bailey effort, Dennis Chambers appears on a few tracks on the second CD of the series. Greg Bissionette is actually on the first Bass Extremes effort. Burbridge appears on two tracks on the second album as well. —the preceding unsigned comment is by 68.97.33.188 (talk • contribs)

RfA
[edit]Hi Bbatsell - I'm glad to hear you are considering the prospects of adminship. In my experience, objections to RfA can arise for lots of different reasons. Some of the common objections are:
- User has too few edits - This is rarely a problem at 2000+ edits, so you should be fine
- User has been here too little - You've been here a year so that should be fine. There could be a question as to why you become so much more active recently - so you should be prepared to answer that question
- User has too few edits to _____ space. In your case, you seem to focus mainly on the articles, and some people like to see administrators be involved in policy discussions
- User has done horrible things or been controversial - I haven't seen any problems here for you, but I've not gone through your entire history
- User has not done dirty work, such as cleanup of vandalism - clearly not a problem for you since you are a committed vandal fighter.
- User has nominated themselves, or campaigned to get votes for adminship - easy enough to avoid doing
- User gives poor or evasive answers to the questions they are asked in the RfA process
- User has not set an e-mail address
- User does not have a User page, or there user page is offensive for some reason - You user page looks great, unless someone complains you have too many user boxes - but you can't please everyone!
I think you would be an excellent admin. You probably have already done this, but you should look over the administrators' reading list and how-to guide, as well as the guide to requests for adminship. If you decide you would like to go forward, I would be honored to nominate you. Johntex\talk 18:16, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- BTW - This edit was almost too amusing to revert. *Sigh* The burden of responsibility. Johntex\talk 18:44, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

blanking
[edit]The only reason I blanked that section was to stop repetition. The history section was repeated twice, identically, although one of the two sections repeated the text in itself multiple times. This is the latest IP in a long, long series of vandalisms starting with Porridge and then going off to hit reverters home pages with profanity, abuse, and at least one penis picture. If I were an admin I would have just blocked them rather than throw test4 on their page. Being nice with test1 test2 test3 test4 is no longer justified; they know what they're doing, they're actively sockpuppeting, and getting more hostile and abusive. Mark Gallager deleted Team Louis
[edit]Why did Mark Gallager delete the page entitled Team Louis? There was nothing offensive about it. If you dont believe it is a real team then come and see for yourself, the new league kicks off in less than 3 weeks. Apple Aperture
[edit]I noticed your comment about making the Aperture Software page exclusively for Apple. I think otherwise. There should be one page for Aperture Software which talks about both Aperture Visual Information Manager (known as Aperture since 1990) and Apple Aperture. I notice that the Aperture Software was redirected from an Apple Aperture page. --Harodf 21:33, 5 February 2006 (UTC) harold_feinleib@aperture.com

[edit]Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those.
