Murasaki again
Hi Bamse, just checking in. I haven't forgotten about the emaki page but have been overwhelmed by real-life events so I'm not editing much. Hopefully by May I can be back full-time. I haven't had a chance to pull Bowring's diary out of the stack of books it's fallen into, but I will get to it. I think the emaki page should have a more developed lead - what are your thoughts? Also, I think I've addressed your comments on the biography page. Also thanks for holding the fort the other day when the biography was on the front page. Truthkeeper (talk) 01:04, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

- I'm not very good with leads either and need to bring myself up to speed again, but when I do, I don't mind trying to put in a lead for you that you can tweak. Mostly everything on the page needs to be summarized in the lead and a nice image added. It's a complicated page though, so not all that easy to summarize when not completely immersed in sources. - That's a tall order with so many to choose from. I won't get to it immediately though. Leads really are tough for me. None of my pages get a lead until the very end. I need to spend some time thinking about how to tie all of this up. I also want to summarize it on the diary page - which might help the thought process along. - There was paragraph in the background section that seemed to work well in the lead, so to take the easy path I've tried that for now. If you think it doesn't work, go ahead and revert. I've also moved the images slightly - but also can be reverted. I had the problem of too many images and not enough text in the Murasaki page - so many images exist for her work. Hi,
I noticed your username on the list of available translators for German to English language.
I need translation of a text about members of the medieval family Humoj. They lived in Albania in 15th century and were loyal pronoiers to the Venetian Republic who ruled coastal cities of Albania (Albania Veneta). There are a couple of paragraphs written by Oliver Jens Schmitt that I am not able to understand using google translator. Here they are:

If it goes to GAN, any units need to be provided in imperial units as well, e.g. with {{convert}}.

- Thanks a lot for the detailed comments; Art and Architecture Good Articles, of which there are lots, gets a combined 10 views a day - unlike FAs which get rotated across the Main Page (like Murasaki Shikibu, an extra 25,000 views in the first day) - so, per law of diminishing returns, and all those hundreds of Prefectural Natural Parks which still don't have so much as a stub..., plus the fact I need to be offline for most of the next few months, I'm not sure if I'll nominate it. (Oh yes, and per quality scale, this should be "approaching (although not equalling) the quality of a professional encyclopedia." Not necessarily attained... See for example Britannica article, which seems to largely comprise a Maltesers advert of a girl lifting up her top...) However your comments are still more than valid/helpful. - Wow, that removed lots! Plus, possibly, Eureka! Have just replaced the link to the commons folder with links to the individual image files (revert if you dislike). The library also has a copy of this - 1915 (so out of copyright), but the b&w images are amazing; be good for the buildings - for condition then, effects of restoration since - plus lots of statues etc. Interested? - That's good news - and thank you for your input/compliments/offer; here's the first of those images (think it's one you're missing) - I have about a quarter of the five hundred or so now; resisted the beautiful temples to concentrate initially on the sculptures; propose to retain naming per plates - so as not to misinterpret anything and maybe interesting for the period names and romanization... Do you think there should be a new category in commons for these images? eg Japanese Temples and Treasures (1915) or Shimbi Shoin Temples & Treasures or something like that? There may be a few technical shortcomings on my part - it's really dark in the library and difficult to focus me old manual lenses (not able to use scanners as an external user), but maybe worth it? Other than this, one of my favourites, I have for now only processed the NT statues for which there aren't yet any images; 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10a, 10b; for 11a, and 11b, the caption for location only says 'Kwannondo', but I've checked against pictures in this book, and it looks identical to me (apart from absence of lotus petals around the pedestal), plus the book says it's NT, so I'm happy matching it with Kōgen-ji. - Wow! Amazing set. Thank you. Put all into the treasure list and added some categories. The table does not look that empty anymore. As for what next, I don't have a preference. I am just a bit worried that not all of the images will find a place in a wikipedia article soon, particularly the non-NT sculptures. So perhaps to focus on i) non-NT sculptures of temples where these statues are the main image or main treasure and ii) details of some of the more famous/more interesting looking NT sculptures which might one day get their own wikipedia article (e.g. Guze and Kudara Kannon, Shakyamuni triad at Horyuji, Ashura,...); haven't checked whether those are already covered in detail by pictures on commons though. - Don't worry - I'll concentrate for now on NTs! From elsewhere is your missing painting and the Taima Mandala; other pictures beside sculptures? how about 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 - I haven't checked all of these to see if they are the NTs, in particular none of the armour; they are all in the NT crafts category at the moment and some may need evicting; as for sculptures, similarly replacing a favourite with better 1 (how good is that?), and some new ones too - 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. - Pretty! Sesshu Toyo, Taima Mandala and 1-13 re-checked, added to NT lists and with some extra categories and descriptions. Only this image I believe is not a NT, at least I could not match it to any of the four NT armours of Oyamazumi Shrine (per this unreliable source and per google image search). On the other hand, that shrine seems to have plenty of armours so it could well be an ICP. Will have a look at 1-8 now. bamse (talk) 22:36, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

- Hello again, well spotted with the images - and you're not the only one, a Japanese user was fleshing out the Unkei article and others with them yesterday, which is pretty quick going. The four buildings are from a three volume set of around a thousand images, not great quality, but perhaps better than nothing; there's also an image of the main hall of Nanatsuji/Nanatsudera in Nagoya, an NT destroyed along with the NT pagoda during the bombing of 1945; the Horyuji statues are from a 60 issue publication on the temple and its treasures; the Saiendo Yakushi is particularly interesting I thought with all those swords arranged around the walls; more recent photos show bare plaster. I did really like your earlier suggestion above about concentrating on details for NT statues about which separate articles could be written. Have now pretty much finished Dainichi - would be good to have the usual comments and suggestions if you have a chance; also, do you have any thoughts about a title? "Statue of Dainichi Nyorai by Unkei (NT)"? There are a couple of other Dainichi's that seem to be attributed to him in some quarters on stylistic grounds. And yes, all 52 bosatsu (although apparently a few depict monks) - if you are interested I could process and upload; finally if there is anything you are particularly after for an article, image or info wise, let me know, as the library's collection is pretty good, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 15:46, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hadn't spotted the swords behind the Yakushi. Very interesting indeed. Do you know the reason or when the photo was taken? Can't remember seeing swords in a temple like that. Will have a look at the Dainichi Nyorai article shortly. I like the idea with the descriptive image. As for the title, perhaps "Dainichi Nyorai (Enjō-ji)" or "Dainichi Nyorai (Unkei)" or "Dainichi Nyorai Zazō (Enjō-ji)" or "Sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai (Enjō-ji)" or ... If this is by far the most famous Dainichi Nyorai sculpture, a title like "Dainichi Nyorai Sculpture" could work. If there are other Dainichi Nyorai sculptures by Unkei of comparable relevance, we might want to specify the location (Enjō-ji); assuming that there is only one such sculpture at the temple. As for what else to do, the bosatsu are nice, but I am not planning to write an article about them anytime soon, so it would be perhaps wasted effort. To photograph and upload all those images. Of course, if you have images for NT which are not covered yet (e.g. buildings, swords, crafts,...) that would be great. When I get time, I hope to complete two articles which I started in my sandbox: User:Bamse/Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Rebellion and User:Bamse/Ban Dainagon Ekotoba. Genji question
Hi Bamse, I don't know whether you've seen this conversation re the Genji image. Apparently I made a mistake. I've been looking at images in some museums and found this [1] - do you know if this is an image we have at Commons? I'll go look, but can't always find what I want there. If not, I think I'll upload this to use - certainly it's not one we've used yet. Also thought you might be interested in this link [2]. The Heilbrunn has a lot of interesting information - the links at the bottom of the article are Jstor articles but available w/out having to use Jstor which is handy. Thought you might be interested. - I saw the discussion, but generally know little about ukiyo-e, so I left it to Viking Rollo and Oda Mari. Don't remember seeing that British Museum image on commons. Alternatively perhaps (not sure) Genji is depicted in the Genji Monogatari Emaki, but maybe you prefer a more portrait style image like you had. Personally I think the article already has many images of Heian people doing Heian stuff, so some calligraphy could be a good idea, also considering that she was a writer. I've sent (1) the Fujiwara passage - you asked what language it's in, well there's no kana; (2) the Farris about it; (3) mini pictures of the three Ban Dainagon scrolls; (4) the Ban Dainagon text; and (5) an English-language introduction to the Ban Dainagon; I've tried to OCR these - the Ban Dainagon text may have worked a bit, but unfortunately the Fujiwara hasn't really; I can easily reimage the Fujiwara if wished; as for the Ban Dainagon, as you know, what I hoped is I'd be able to have some decent quality images and do a photomerge, but there's generally not much overlap, sometimes there's a little missing, the paper's really glossy, and I've photographed them a couple of times and can't get a good result, so I've just sent some overall shots which at least have some labels, a working copy perhaps; individual scenes from other books should be much easier if you specify; good luck! Zhao Chang
The description page of the image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Apple_Blossoms.jpg) says its dated Southern Song Dynasty, before 1279. Which I took it has to be in the 13th century, as early 12th century is more likely to be Northern Song. The date on the description page is quite unclear in my opinion. I just adjusted to the most reasonable period. However, I did some search, and it seems Zhao Chang was actually active during the Northern Song era. So the date on the image's description page should probably be changed, or at least say Northern Song instead of Southern Song.--Sevilledade (talk) 07:51, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

The lack of dates asserting their lives seem to show that they aren't legitimate since even insignificant nobles during the time have exact dates of birth and death. Also his surviving daughter married a commoner which would be extremely unlikely if she was a legitimate daughter since Nassau was considered a very royal line at the time and wouldn't have married below the rank of Count or Prince. I'm coming from a different place from you - I have given myself the task of keeping category:Pages with missing references list clear (which is where I came across "yours"). So I see a wide variety of pages. As I come across pages with non-Latin text, I think it important to inform the reader that perhaps his computer won't show the page as it should be, so I insert a {{contains xxx text}} as I go. It seems a polite step, and the small square it generates is fairly unobtrusive. Of course I realize that for most visitors it is unnecessary - if they visit a page describing Japanese writing for instance, then one may assume that they have an interest enough to have already made any modification required, and in any case not to be surprised by the page containing Japanese text. On the other hand, maybe they aren't aware that modifications need to be made.
Either way, I think it important, and it can only help their Wikipedia experience. (By the way, I've not tested, but I hope the template carries a 'do not print' tag).

- (Page stalker) For accessibility reasons, {{lang}} or Multilingual support templates such as Category:Japanese multilingual support templates are supposed to be used to wrap all non-English text on WP, but many editors (even editors who have been told about these WP accessibility guidelines)—and particularly editors of articles relating to Europe and Vietnam—are embedding foreign-language text without using templates. There are also templates such as {{expand}} and Lang title for foreign-language and mixed-language article titles, but they also seem to be little used. LittleBen (talk) 04:38, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- I am usually careful and use {{nihongo}} wherever there is some Japanese text. I think it is a better solution since it informs the reader directly at the place where the Japanese text appears. Japanese empresses
Hello. Actually I saw that how you expanded some of the Japan-related articles. It has been a time that I and some other users are discussing about the articles of Japanese empresses. I really tried to expand those articles which are stubs but unfortunately I couldn't, because I don't know Japanese and I can't use the information from Japanese Wiki. It will be really good if you expand them by translating the information from Japanese Wikipedia. Currently, Chinese empresses' articles are in better situation than Japanese ones. The titles of some articles must be compared with Japanese wiki for correction and names of empresses should become translated from ja:日本の皇后一覧 or ja:Template:歴代皇后一覧 in Japanese wiki as we don't have a complete list of empresses. Please work on these articles as you're interested in Japan's history. I look forward to see those articles expanded by you. Japanese emperor's and empress regents' articles (like Empress Jingu) can become more expanded too if it is needed because most of them are expanded, but currently empresses' articles need more improvement. ;) Keivan.fTalk 13:13, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Also, in my experience (haven't checked for the Empresses), ja-wikipedia articles are rarely referenced and I am somewhat reluctant to translate unreferenced articles of more complicated topics (translation of less "controversial" articles is fine as for me). I am not super-familiar with the topic, but as far as I understand, except for a few empresses/consorts (mostly very old or recent), there will be little information in the articles. This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.
Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.
While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.
Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. Can you help verify translations of articles from German

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from German to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original German article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including German , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from German. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the German article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). I am using Template:Harvard citation no brackets for book references, having a Template:Cite book in the bibliography section of an article and a "Harvnb" entry in the references section of the article, which is automatically hyperlinked to the "cite book".
How can I achieve the same convenient referencing for an online encyclopedia (instead of a book)? Here each entry has its own author. So basically what I want is:
- a reference which contains the name of the encyclopedia entry (and optionally the author of the entry)
- a bibliography entry which contains all the general data of the encyclopedia and which is the anchor if I click on the respective reference
Note that, unlike to the book case, I don't have a page number, and that the encyclopedia is written by many people (each article written by one person only).

Hi, you know we've talked "Old" National Treasures and still mentioned Important Art Objects before, well here are some "old" Prefectural Monuments as in List of Places of Scenic Beauty of Japan (Ōsaka); they fall outside the current seven prefectural places of scenic beauty in Osaka per the bunkacho stats; eg in the city of Takatsuki there is one 府規名 (also there are both 府史跡 and 府規史 (the latter apparently under the "old" regulations)), namely this gorge 摂津峡, which is not included in the prefectural seven [8], but is seemingly an "old" Monument, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 06:28, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Haboku sansui (破墨山水図, Broken Ink Landscape) is a splashed-ink landscape painting on a hanging scroll. It was made by the Japanese artist Sesshū Tōyō in 1495, in the Muromachi period. Sesshū Tōyō was a Zen Buddhist monk and painter. The work is a development of suibokuga paintings made with Chinese ink, using dark and light shades on a silk or paper medium. The monochromatic style can result in artworks similar to calligraphy. In spite of its title, the work is not one of "broken ink" (haboku) but rather one of "splashed ink" (hatsuboku). Translation of article title
Hi there Bamse, I saw you listed at the translation desk, and wondered if I could solicit you help in translating the title of a journal article? The title is Cortina Tripodis: Zu Aufhängung und Gebrauch subrömischer Hängebecken aus Britannien und Irland. The subtitle is (I think) "On the suspension and use of sub-Roman hanging bowls from Britain and Ireland", but I'm getting hung up on whatever "Cortina Tripodis" means. (Relatedly, the name of the journal is Frühmittelalterliche Studien—is that "Early Medieval Studies"?) The article is cited in Benty Grange hanging bowl; I've copied the cite below:

- Your translation of the subtitle and journal name seems correct to me. Cortina Tripodis is not German but Latin I believe, so I am not an expert. However there is mention of a "Beckendreifuß" in the text which would match the meaning of "cortina tripodis". This should be something like in figure 2 of the article, i.e., a bowl on a tripod. As for the "tripodis" tripod stand seems to be a good translation. So I would go with "tripod stand bowl" or just "tripod bowl". bamse (talk) 20:23, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
