- Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
- Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
- In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
- Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
- Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like
<ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>
, copy the whole thing). - In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
- If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:
==References== {{Reflist}}

[edit]Please do not add commentary, your own point of view, or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles, as you did to Mass killings under communist regimes. Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you. — Czello 16:53, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Czello This is not commentary. It is the fact that is known to all historians. Bengal famine of 1943 is historically attested fact, I can provide you sources. The claim made by the person in the previous line was blatantly false. If it is allowed to be published there, then my sentence should be allowed to be published there too. Balrajsingh776 (talk) 16:59, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- Leaving aside from the fact that "famines under capitalist regimes" are not equatable to "famines caused by communism", ultimately you didn't provide a source. Instead it appeared you provided original research. Further discussion should take place on the article's talk page. Thank you. — Czello 17:13, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Czello Many famines in India under British rule happend directly because of capitalism. Under "free market" policies, British government did not sent food grains to famines stricken parts of the country and allowed the food to be exported out when people were starving. They also restructured the village economy to produce cash crops for exports, instead of food crops, which reduced the self sufficiency of the villages. Irish famine was also caused because of capitalism.British did similar things there. Balrajsingh776 (talk) 02:36, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
- This is, again, WP:OR. It also is irrelevant to the issue of deaths under communism - you're essentially making a whataboutism argument. Ultimately, if the sources say that communist policies have caused famine, then that's what we report. It's not our job as editors to try to disprove them. — Czello 08:01, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Czello The source said "after 1918 only communist contries experienced famines" which is wrong and it is my duty to tell the truth. Balrajsingh776 (talk) 08:05, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Balrajsingh776! Your additions to History of Punjab have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 22:39, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Your edit to Punjabi language has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. - @Arjayay Can you please explain why have you removed the headings of Industries and remittances from under the economy sub section. They form an important part of the economy of Punjab and deserve a separate sub section. Balrajsingh776 (talk) 01:27, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Balrajsingh776, thank you for your post. I have re-examined my edit, reinstated most of what I had deleted and struck out my warning above.
The exception is the opinion piece cited to Researchpaedia, which does not appear to be a reliable, independent, publisher with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. As shown in this search Researchpaedia is not currently used in any Wikipedia article (the only use is on this page). I am not sure why I deleted the section headers, I think I was confused by your moving around of sections, for which I apologise - best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 10:01, 18 July 2023 (UTC)- @Arjayay Thank you very much for your feedback. I learned many things from it. I will try to cite more sources. And will avoid writing in such a language that sounds like an opinion. I will always try to firmly ground my edits in reliable data. Wikipedia is not interested in who you are, where you are from, or what you "know".
Wikipedia is only interested in what has already been published in reliable sources, which need to be cited in order to support information added to our pages. It is not up to me, any other editor, or the reader, to find reliable sources for you.
You are adding statements without any references, so they are being removed, and will continue to be removed.

Deletion discussion about Border Areas of Punjab, India
[edit]Hello Balrajsingh776, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Border Areas of Punjab, India, should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Border Areas of Punjab, India.
Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Chaotic Enby}}

[edit]Hi Balrajsingh776. Thank you for your work on Dalip Singh Majithia. Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Thank you for starting this article on Dalip Singh Majithia. There are a number of references, although many of them are news articles with similar content published at the time of his death. Nevertheless, there is some earlier coverage, and he and Joan Sanders Majithia seem to have had some celebrity in India. I've switched many of the references to use citation templates, which might help over time with managing 'link rot'; it also helps to acknowledge authors of the articles (in a few places).

Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Balrajsingh776! Your additions to Health in Punjab, India have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's elegibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 15:43, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Diannaa Thank you for bringing this to my notice. The information was taken from two sources and mixed together. Can you please tell me which of those sources was copyrighted and how I violated it? Balrajsingh776 (talk) 15:56, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
