WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members). So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497). Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article. Starfish

Thank you for the work you are doing to improve the Starfish article. Would it be possible to bring the review to a conclusion by the end of the month? I only ask because I am competing in the WikiCup again and have to think carefully about the timing for FACs because of the rule about not exceeding one solo and one joint candidacy at a time. Hi Axl, regarding your comment [1], I too have questioned the little girl's lesions. When I first saw the image I believed it was malignant smallpox. However, when I saw the source, the CDC, I did what probably everybody else has done, I assumed they had it right. There is very little space between the lesions, especially on her face. This suggests the lesions are beginning to join which is a hallmark of the malignant variety. I agree that the photo you suggest would be more accurate. Malke 2010 (talk) 15:57, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Templates

Hey Axl

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Axl. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Actually by my own standards, I don't think that I should be an admin. I have relatively little experience in admin-related areas and there is no compelling reason for me to have the tools. What is ironic about it? Anyway, you are mixing here apples with pears. My statement about being opposed to badgering was an answer to a comment by TP who was under the false impression that I tried to nudge him out of the Neutral column. That was never my intention. On the other side, to bow out of a discussion is IMO the exact opposite of badgering. The latter consists, as far as I had been aware of, in insisting to keep on discussing something. Could you give Anesthesia a read for me? It's a total rework and I haven't been able to find any other interested editors. Re recent change to Rainbow trout

Axl, this change to Rainbow trout [2] is now inaccurate. Please note mission of caltrout.org. It is specifically to: "to protect and restore wild trout, steelhead, salmon and their waters throughout California." They not only focus on the fish, but on the rivers and lakes themselves. The original text (before my edit) described "wild trout, steelhead, other salmon." Trout and steelhead are not types of salmon. Therefore the text was inaccurate. I changed "other salmon" to "other salmonids". (Actually "steelhead" is also redundant.)

It is self-evident that the protection of wild trout, steelhead and salmon also involves the protection of their waters.

Thus my edit to the text actually makes the sentence more accurate than it was before, while still being in line with the source. If you insist that the protection of their waters is not self-evident, then I shall re-phrase the text. However this will need to be carefully worded to avoid copyright infringement. Hi Axl....Montanabw has the fourth highest number of edits to the Rainbow Trout article, but Mike Cline is definitely the primary editor who has worked on the article...since he has restored your edits that Montanabw was in disagreement with, do you have any other issues of concern at this point?--MONGO 00:18, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Actually, I think that Montanabw has a good point about close paraphrasing of the Steelhead Society text. However it is my opinion that this should be changed to a distant paraphrase, not a direct quote. Axl ¤ [Talk] 14:26, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Whatever works, I don't want to derail Mike's FAC, I'm not lead, I was just heavily involved in the peer review and did a bit on a couple sections. I chose the direct quote because it was the easier solution. Perhaps consider a direct quote for the other where it expressly says "mission" of the group is, and then a more distant paraphrase on the steelhead one? Montanabw^(talk) 21:15, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
