Hello Friends,
Welcome to my talk page.
I'd love to have your comments, responses and brickbats (if any). Earlier a newbie, now just a bull in a China shop, so am bound to trod on a few toes, but I'm ready to stand a drink in that case :). Am enjoying being a contributing and participating member of this global community.
My main field of work is on Indian butterflies, reptiles and military history.

Battle of Assaye
[edit]Hello, I have left a note on your talk page because I don't want to give you an impression that there are any issues with article ownership from myself. I have removed the sentence you added about a public monument being erected in Calcuatta as it is unreferenced and I am planning to take this article to GAC. I have searched for a reference regarding the monument but I can not find any evidence it was ever built (I have never been to Calcutta). Also may I ask your opinion on the neutrality of the article? With most of the references available to me written by British historians, I hope it is not slanted towards the East India Company or Wellesley (although I feel this was an important battle in Wellesley's career). Indian Army
[edit]Maybe you need to go through edits before tagging them as "unconstructive". --128.211.201.161 (talk) 05:16, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- To add, the list was removed because it is more relevant to the article on the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army rather than the main Indian Army article. The main article itself is too long and more sub-articles need to be created so as to shorten the main article's length. Thanks --128.211.201.161 (talk) 05:19, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Spoken Wikipedia
[edit]Unfortunately, my only experience with Spoken Wikipedia has been occasionally seeing the associated icons in articles; I've never had any involvement with the production side of things. Kirill [pf] 02:57, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Re: Error in template
[edit]Er, basically, what happened was that there was an error in the infobox that displays the file information for spoken recordings. Instead of showing the authors name, the field said {{author_name_link}}. This was due to a mistake in the template programming over at the Commons. You see, the value was author= {{author_name_link}}, but {{author_name_link}} doesn't exist on the Commons, it only applies on Wikipedia. I changed it to what it should have been, {{author_name}}, which is a function that takes the inputted name and makes it a link to the user page. {{author_name_link}} should have done the same think, but it was non-existent, and so really couldn't do anything.
Anyhow, I fixed it, but I couldn't tell until a few minutes later, because the servers had to change about one hundred different pages at once, and it took them a minute.
I hope that explained what I was talking about. (Though it's probably incoherent...) Sophus Bie (talk) 01:44, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- You're welcome! I'm glad my explication wasn't as incomprehensible as it seemed to me! :) Though I'm not quite sure what you mean by not being able to upload to the Commons directly; I was under the impression that the licensing they had problems with was fair use, not GFDL. Is it some requirement specific to the Spoken Wikipedia project that I missed? Sophus Bie (talk) 02:07, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Re Merger of Persia 1856-1857 (Battle Honour)
[edit]Hello AshLin, i agree that this article should be merged into Anglo-Persian War, but how to go about it is difficult. The Battle Honour article has a great deal of information on it!It deals specifically with Indian military units and in great detail. I am willing to help in anyway i can. Tristan benedict (talk) 12:36, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- Its been sometime since I had suggested the merger. At that time I was just beginning to add battle honour articles. I now think that both the articles should continue to exist but with general history and overview of military details in the {{Anglo-Persian War]] while the battle honour concentrates on what is relevant to it. AshLin (talk) 01:49, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Ornithology
[edit]This is a tough nut. The subject is large and its borders are as usual difficult to establish, its history is long and techniques used are numerous. Those were the key areas of the article but it is hard to get to GA unless all the literature is available. I have only a few bits and those are already added. Restructuring the article is too much of a hassle. Shyamal (talk) 01:53, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Indian stamps
[edit]Do you mean Postage stamps and postal history of India? Surely you aren't going to list every stamp India has printed? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:01, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
I see. I agree that the history articles to little to document the actual stampls themselves. I would not personally object to a detailed list of stamps by decade and each country. I have the 2004 Stanley Gibbons catalogue of Abu Dhabi - Zululand in four gigantic directories but the task for too daunting to take on. If you want to list all of the stamp issues for India, I support you providing you give references. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:22, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
Wish you luck on that, some of the issues, particularly older one or historic ones marking major events like 1947 etc issues may even be notable for their own articles. But any step to improving our philatelic coverage on here is a good thing. Look forward to seeing the end result. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:29, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Spoken articles
[edit]Hi AshLin: I'm working on next month's issue of the WP:BIRDS newsletter, and I'm wondering if I could get you to put together a short piece on the spoken article stuff you're doing. Basically, it would be good to know what's needed, what's involved, and who people can contact if they'd like to get involved. Do you have time to write a paragraph or two about this? If so, please leave the info on the Tip line page; if not, can you please let me know ASAP so I can fill the gap with something else? Thanks! MeegsC | Talk 20:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Ash: That's great! As for "rules", there are none—and no real word limit either. I try to keep the newsletter from getting too huge (they take up a lot of space on talk pages otherwise), so in general try to keep things to 2-3 paragraphs for the bigger articles. The other option would be to do things serially, as Richard001 did with some of the photo/video/Commons bits he suggested for previous issues. Perhaps I'll do a short intro for this one (i.e. describing what spoken articles are, based on the info you posted on the talk page) and leave you to do the "how to" for next month. Would that work? And would you mind if I listed you as the contact for people who are interested in helping or learning more about it? I'm off to do some fieldwork for the next few weeks, and will only have intermittent internet access after Monday, so don't be surprised if you don't hear from me for a bit. Gurkha battle honours
[edit]Hi mate, I am working on creating a list of Gurkha battle honours similar to the List of Gurkha VCs.
I've got all the battle honours that have gone to the regiments prior to Indian independence, but not the Indian battle and theatre honours that were awarded to Indian Gurkha units afterwards. You wouldn't by any chance have this information, or a source that I could use? Also, do you know if there are any battle honours that were awarded to Gurkha regiments which are considered repugnant (I think that is the correct term) and if there are any, what is the best way for them to be discussed if I were to make such a list? AustralianRupert (talk) 01:23, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi mate, thanks for your comments on my talk page. I appreciate your opinion as I understand that the topic is a sensitive one in India. I am thinking that perhaps the best way to deal with this would be to create an article called List of British Battle Honours awarded to Gurkha Regiments or something similar. By definition this would then only discuss honours awarded prior to 1947. Would this be an appropriate way of treating the subject in your opinion? — AustralianRupert (talk) 10:33, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation
[edit]Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are listed as a GA reviewer. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.
We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! GA Sweeps June update
[edit]Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 396 articles were swept in May! That more than doubles our most successful month of 163 swept articles in September 2007 (and the 2 articles swept in April)! I plan to be sending out updates at the beginning of each month detailing any changes, updates, or other news until Sweeps are completed. So if you get sick of me, keep reviewing articles so we can be done (and then maybe you'll just occasionally bump into me). We are currently over 60% done with Sweeps, with just over a 1,000 articles left to review. With over 40 members, that averages out to about 24 articles per person. If each member reviews an article a day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. I know that may be asking for a lot, but it would allow us to complete Sweeps and allow you to spend more time writing GAs, reviewing GANs, or focusing on other GARs (or whatever else it is you do to improve Wikipedia) as well as finish ahead of the two-year mark coming up in August. I recognize that this can be a difficult process at times and appreciate your tenacity in spending time in ensuring the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 17:53, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps July update
[edit]Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 290 articles were swept in June! Last month was our second most successful month in reviewing articles (after May). We are currently over 70% done with Sweeps, with just under 800 articles left to review. With nearly 50 members, that averages out to about 15 articles per person. If each member reviews an article every other day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. This may sound difficult, but if everyone completes their reviews, Sweeps would be completed in less than two years when we first started (with only four members!). With the conclusion of Sweeps, each editor could spend more time writing GAs, reviewing at the backlogged GAN, or focusing on other GARs. Again, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 17:37, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
