someone is using my IP adress to vandalise stuff and I get all the blame

hey, sorry to disturb you... i just got a message saying you will report me to telefonica for vandalism... thing is, ever since i created a wikipedia account, i havent used it to change the pages or anything.. is it possible that someone is using my IP adress to vandalise stuff? because i find wikipedia very useful, and i dont think its funny that someone is using my adress to put up the wrong information.

That warning was posted nearly a year and a half ago; since then your IP address has been blocked by administrators on seven different occasions for varying lengths of time. Images on Welsh wici

Hello Arwel!

I need your help! hehe. Basically, I wish to transfer images on Lewis Valentine, D.J. Williams, and the image on Penyberth over to their English language articals.... but I do not understand the copyright reasons behind their use in Wicipedia. Can you help me with transfering them over? Then, I wish to use them in the History of Plaid Cymru artical amongst others. Hi. OK, I've taken a look at all three pictures on cy:, however the reason I can see why they would not be acceptable on the English Wikipedia at the moment is because there's absolutely no copyright information about the pictures at all. Now, the Valentine and Williams photos are described as "tua 1936"; if copyright remained with the original photographer then the photographer would have had to have died not later than December 1936 for the pictures to be currently out of copyright (December 1937 to become out of copyright next month - it extends for "life + 70 years"), which would seem to be rather unlikely. Since the photos were published in "Coelcerth Rhyddid" which the image description says was published by Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru it is possible that the copyright actually belongs to Plaid Cymru now if the photos were produced "for hire" by the publishers of the pamphlet, in which case it might be possible to approach Plaid to see if they would be willing to release the photos (or possibly even the original photos for better quality) under a licence acceptable to Wikipedia, or even to release it into the public domain after all these years.

If it is possible to get the photos released acceptably, then it would be possible to upload them to Wikipedia Commons, which would make them available to all language versions of Wikipedia. -- Arwel (talk) 12:37, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Hehe, im geting a tad confused. What I did was try and go back to the image page and cut/paste Template:Non-free media rationale onto it with {{ }} and that places a box on there but then I do not know how to edit it to fill in the information. Can you direct me to an example that I may see? I may be able to learn it that way. OK, take a look at the example at Image:1953ThreePence.jpeg. For the Lewis Valentine photo, you might want to have something like:

You will need to have similar entries with "Article = Welsh language", "Article = Plaid Cymru", "Article = Caernarfonshire", "Article = Penyberth", and "Article = History of Plaid Cymru", with appropriate changes to the "purpose" line to keep the bots happy. The examples given "below" are:

The autoformatting mechanism will not accept date ranges (December 13–17, 1951) or slashes (the night of 30/31 May), which must be input without using the function.

The example given is four days, which seems a reasonable definition of a date range. If your interpretation was accepted then we would not be able to autoformat birth and death dates at the beginning of biographical articles, which is preposterous and contrary to the practice of Wikipedia since autoformatting was created. The MOS is supposed to reflect the consensus on usage, not dictate it. The practice for the whole 5-6 years I've been editing has been to regard a "date range" as a short period within the same calendar month, or a few days over an adjacent pair of months, where the autoformatting system was acknowledged to be imperfect. --Arwel (talk) 20:04, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah, your use of the word 'defined' confused me. I usually use that word only when the definition is explicit. You inferred the constraint from the example. I understand your reasoning but the guidance currently forbids linking date ranges and contains no such constraint. If guidance is wrong, it should be changed. Ruthin page on English Wiki

Noswaith dda Arwel, (switching to Saesneg now, that's about as far as my Cymraeg goes). The Ruthin page doesn't seem to be displaying correctly at the moment - the main text doesn't start until just below the first infobox. I'm pretty sure it was dispaying ok until the 31 Dec edits. Apparently it's the way in which Internet ExploderExplorer reacts with the infobox template which causes the problem when there are images at the top of the page. I've moved them lower down, and it seems to have fixed the problem. -- Arwel (talk) 01:07, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

After rereading some sources, I was thinking a higher porprotion then that identified as 'white British', in the absence of a Welsh tickbox. Suggestion for a title

Arwel, might you help me with a title for an artical? I have become interested in the issue of local housing in Welsh communities, mostly through the contraversies voiced by Simon Glyn. I wish to create an artical that explores the state of local housing in Wales, touching on housing prices and language, and of course holiday homes. I've restored it. When I deleted it, the talk page rationale for hangon had not been created. Sorry about that. Help!

Hi, Arwel. I hope you are well.

I'm hoping that as an administrator who has some knowledge of the topic can help sort out some trouble in the history of British film certificates article. Basically, an new editor to the article, Qst, has spent the last week completely rewriting the article transforming the established version to his own version, which is full of inaccuracies.

I have pointed out the inaccuracies to Qst on the talk page and reverted to the established version several times. Each time, Qst blindly reverts back to his version and claims that he will fix the article, but, despite being given several days, does not actually fix it (therefore leading to inaccurate information being left on Wikipedia).

He is now also, despite the polite warnings of another editor (Nick Cooper), breaking talk page rules by editing my own comments and deleting Nick Cooper's comments.

The most frustrating thing about all this is that the established version of the article was fine. All of the errors have been introduced by Qst, partially due to his reliance on an inaccurate source (a personal homepage, which he values above the official BBFC site). The only real problem with the established version was that it lacked references, so I added them, but he simply reverted it straight back to his inaccurate version.

I am reviewing the situation, though it's a bit late to get heavily involved tonight, and I'm tied up tomorrow! A quick look at www.britishpictures.com leaves me rather concerned about its provenance. It does not look like a particularly authoritative site - starting a news item on the sites' main page with "My mate Nigel has a book out..." doesn't inspire confidence. I see you have contributed information on the Welsh prohibition referenda to the page on Referenda in the UK. The article states Wales was all 'wet' by 1982, and that Dwyfor reverted to 'dry' from 1989 to 1996. This contradicts articles on the referenda in The Times, such as this one:

Hi

Sorry I'm not sure if this is the proper place to put this but I'm wondering what I should do about edits to the WYPR article. The user PublicRadioLover has added some rather flattering comments but someone posted on the blog of a recently removed employee used the same name and their ip routed to mail.wypr.org which means they were editing their own page. What course of action should I take?

Fair use rationale for Image:Plaid_Cymru_2006logo.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Plaid_Cymru_2006logo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. I am looking for someone to translate the Hen Ogledd article from Welsh, and someone recommended I ask you. Hello Arwel! You helped me transfer an image from Welsh wici to here, and I was wondering if you could do the same for an image from the Welsh wiki for Gruffydd ap Cynan. The image is of Gruffydd ap Cynan while in prision and I wish to use that on his bio page and on the Kingdom of Gwynedd page. Additionally, there is an image on the Llywelyn the Great page with his head shot I was hoping to get transfered. I can see that the publication is 1900, so belive that it is past any copyright issues and within the public free use. But can you also tell me who published it and what the caption may say in Welsh? Victoria Cross typo

Thank you for correcting the Michael typo. Why captial H for heroes? Cataloguing rule is sentence case with only the first letter of proper names in uppercase. Is there a different rule for Wikipedia? Anthony Staunton (talk) 13:45, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, it's a while since I've been in that part of the system and the layout's changed! Let's see... go into "Tudalennau arbennig", go to the "Defnyddwyr a'u galluoedd" section and click "Gwnewch ddefnyddiwr cyffredin yn weinyddwr", enter the user name and reason for promotion, and make sure that "Gosod y fflag biwrocrat" is ticked before you click the "Gosod hawliau'r defnyddiwr" button. Fair use images are copyright violations.

Hi Arwel Parry. You have deleted the [[Image:200kroner.jpg]] because it's a "Blatant copyright violation". The Bank of Denmark has the copyright to all Danish bank notes so www.banknotes.com is just as blatant copyright violation as PZFUN who uploaded the image to Wikipedia. As far as I know it the fair use images on en.wikipedia is copyrighted images. You've discovered that PZFUN had downloaded images from www.banknotes.com and written "A scanning by PZFUN" as a source. I'll suggest that we/you reinsert Image:200kroner.jpg and write "www.banknotes.com" in the source. That will IMHO benefit Wikipedia, be legal and save us a lot of unnecessary work - Thank you. I've not been very active for a few days. The actual copyright on the banknote design belongs to the National Bank, and it is of course always possible to create another scan of the 200 Kr note and make a fair use claim. However, the scanner of an image also has copyrights, and in this case the scanner has objected to the image being on Wikipedia without the appropriate credit (and we have previously obviously had problems with this domain, which is why it is on the blacklist and cannot be directly linked to from MediaWiki). This, together with the incorrect origin "A scanning by PZFUN" when it was not, counts against the inclusion of this image on Wikipedia, which is why I'm not intending to restore it. -- Arwel (talk) 16:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Plaid Cymru- HELP!

DrFrench is targeting Plaid membership images for deletion, even though they are from Crown Copyright and free use for Encyclopedia uses. He does this without even posting flags and posting in discussion pages, which is the standard proceedure♦Drachenfyre♦·Talk 23:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Err, actually Crown Copyright does not mean that they are free to use - there are some differences from ordinary copyright in the UK, they effectively become public domain 50 years after publication rather than 70 years after the death of the person who took the images, but Wikipedia does discourage the use of CC images. If you want to keep them, you will need to make a non-free-use rationale for each time the image is used. -- Arwel (talk) 00:11, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Sorry, Mike, the title's mis-spelled, so I've moved it to Wythnos yng Nghymru Fydd, but it's certainly a notable work as far as I'm concerned - BBC Radio Cymru thought enough of it to do a week of special programmes on the 50th anniversary of its publication (a 10-day week, in fact, 16-25 May 2007!). http://www.bbc.co.uk/cymru/radiocymru/safle/wythnos/. Legal tender

Arwel, I was browsing through the 'sterling pound notes' article and I noticed alot of your edits. It seems that you have it correct on the issue of legal tender. It seems however that you were banging your head against a brick wall. You were working in a minefield of total confusion and pre-conceived ideas. It's all explained in the Whitaker's Almanac and it's exactly as you say. As a point of curiosity, the history of legal tender as regards paper money in the UK is very interesting. I'm a bit rusty now because it's about 15 years since I studied this topic. But am I right in saying that the legal tender status of Bank of England notes (in England and Wales only) of five pounds and upwards, goes back to some privilege act of 1833? Then in 1844, the other banks got their note issuing rights curtailed. By 1921, all these residuary rights had expired through mergers. The special case of the legal tender status of the one pound note and ten shilling note to all of the UK is a consequence of the first world war teasury note issue which was designed to replace the sovereigns and half sovereigns. In 1928 these notes were subsumed by the Bank of England. The Bank of England ten shilling note went in 1969 and the one pound note went in about 1985, leaving no legal tender paper money in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Not that legal tender is a necessary condition for accepting perfectly valid currency. Familiarity is the key to general acceptance. Have you ever tried passing a Falkland Island five pound note in London? It doesn't work, despite the parity and the Queen's head. You hit the unfamiliarity barrier, although they would almost certainly wrongly cite legal tender as being their reason for not accepting it. David Tombe (talk) 15:18, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
