How to revert someone's changes

[edit]

Hi, nice to have you on board! You mentioned you didn't know how to revert someone's changes. It's easy: click the history tab to see the list of recent revisions; click on the revision you want to revert to, and you'll see the old page. Then click the edit tab and the edit window will come up, with a big warning message telling you that you're editing an old version, and any changes made since will be discarded. It's normal to not make extra edits at the same time as doing a revert, although you can if you want to — it just makes it more difficult to summarise the change.

One thing I like to emphasise to people is that if you're reverting some undesired change such as vandalism, take a few moments to check that you're reverting back far enough to correct all the changes. Sometimes people don't revert back far enough and no-one notices for some time. Have fun! Fuzzypeg 03:53, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing talk pages

[edit]

Please do not remove the talk page comments of others, as you did at Magic (paranormal). It is usually considered disruptive, unless the removed edit is blatant vandalism. Thanks for understanding! Vassyana 07:04, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for that, I didn't realize it would be disruptive, and did not intend any disruption or malice of any kind. I just noticed that the comment was old, hard to understand, and rather pointless since there has been a section on fictional uses of magic, paranormal or otherwise, since long before the user posted this. Because of this reasoning, and because of the already incredibly cluttered nature of the particular talk page in question, I didn't see any reason for it to be kept where it was, and was simply trying to keep the page useful to the purpose of improving the article.
The comment, "there should be a section for afictional uses of magic (parnomal) in this world. Smith Jones 03:02, 27 February 2007 (UTC)" Is not only not needed, it serves no real purpose at all other than taking up space. I honestly didn't think anyone would mind such a minor edit, especially since no-one has ever responded to it since it was posted in February.[reply]
I will certainly be more aware of this in the future, and will not take such an action again. I have read much of the policies about editing here in Wikipedia, and I try to keep my edits minor, and ensure that they follow the policies for editing articles to the best of my ability; Though I have made several mistakes in the past, and have always accepted responsibility for the results when that happens. If there is a better way to go about what I was trying to do, please feel free to point me to a good resource on this specific subject.
Perhaps once I read all of the resources regarding this, I will understand the proper channels for what I was intending to do. I will research the information specifically about archiving or cleaning up extremely old or outdated comments on talk pages. It is definitely in need of some cleaning up, since a lot of the older comments include a rather long and agressive argument on science vs. magick that was originally from 2003. It is over five years old, and takes up a huge amount of space while serving no real purpose other than being an old talk page flame war between two editors. This and the one above that I attempted to delete should be archived and removed if not deleted outright to keep the talk page relavent to the article.
Old comments that still bear relevance to the article by showing the various changes, decisions, and the reasons behind them wouldn't need to be removed of course; That would be disruptive and unhelpful.
