April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive
[edit]WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of April. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. Hope we can see you in April. |

File source problem with File:Codrington.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Codrington.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:54, 1 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:54, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. A source link on File:V-class-silhouette.gif doesn't work. How do we know it is released on GNU FDL or cc-by-sa licence? I'm asking, because I'd like to use it in Commons. Regards. Pibwl ←« 09:47, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:30, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia Campus Ambassador at GWU/Georgetown
[edit]Hi Argos'Dad, thanks for inquiring about the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador role! If you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador at Georgetown University or George Washington University, I would like to send you the application form. What email address can I send this to? (Feel free to email me this info if you prefer: alin@wikimedia.org).
More details about the Campus Ambassador role can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador. Here is also a little bit more information; in a nutshell: The Campus Ambassadors are crucial components of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. Volunteers in this position will be in charge of training and supporting the participating professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add images, how the talk pages work, etc. Campus Ambassadors will also help recruit other people on campus to contribute to Wikipedia articles, for example by setting up Wikipedia-related student groups and by organizing "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events. In general they will become known as Wikipedia experts on the university campus (in your case, on the GWU or Georgetown University campus). The estimated time commitment for this role is 3 to 5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. The Wikimedia Foundation will hold a mandatory three-day training for all Campus Ambassadors in August, and will continue to stay in contact with and offer full support for the Campus Ambassadors throughout the academic semester.
Thanks. I look forward to hearing back from you soon!
Annie Lin, Campus Team Coordinator

Copyright followup: Claude Pollard
[edit]Hi. Verno is out of the office, so to speak (or going to be; not sure if he's left yet), and I saw your note at his talk page, so I headed over to look at your temporary page. Your proposed rewrite at the temporary space did continue to contain some close paraphrasing as well as some direct duplication of the source. Consider, for example, the following passage:
Pollard was reelected as Attorney General in 1928 but resigned his position in September 1929, before the end of his second term, to become general counsel for the Railway General Managers' Association of Texas. Pollard died in Austin, Texas on November 25, 1942, and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
The source says:
...was reelected in 1928. He resigned in September 1929, before the end of his second term, to become general counsel for the Railway General Managers' Association of Texas. Pollard died in Austin on November 25, 1942, and was buried in the State Cemetery.
Changes to this content were minimal, and there were other passages that also followed too closely, particularly in the "early life" section.
While rewriting content to avoid close paraphrasing can sometimes feel like reaching behind your back to scratch your elbow, I'm afraid that we don't have much choice. While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. The less creative the expression, the looser copyright applies, but even so close paraphrasing becomes a great concern when there are long passages that include fragments of the original and the structure of the original is retained.
The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism". I went on ahead and revised this somewhat to separate it from the source. Ideally, it would be great if you could add something between his resignation from public office and his death. :) More information from multiple sources is a great step towards avoiding close paraphrasing as long as we also avoided fragmented similarity.
If you have questions about this, please let me know. Copyright is mostly what I do on Wikipedia, so I have a lot of practice. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:19, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking the time to rewrite the article to reduce any copyvio. Political biographies are tough since there are often few sources and few ways to describe the timeline of a politician. You have done a great job and I will ask you to look at other examples as I create them.

- Feel free to stop by any time you have concerns. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:17, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
