Information icon Hi Arawoke! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Stashing section

"'The true attraction from the first," Casement wrote, 'was not so much the presence of the scattered Hevea Braziliensis tress through out this remote forest, as the existence of fairly numerous tribes of docile, or at any rate of easily subdued Indians.' The ' 'civlized intruders' ' came to subjugate ('conquistar' is the Spanish word) the Indians, not to annihilate them. The exploiteres kept repeating that they were extending civilization to the Indians in the shape of profitable occupations. This was a travesty. Searching for words to convey the true essence of the system, Casement chose 'brigandage' and a 'system of armed extortion'" Jordan Goodman P 137, quoting R. Casement.

According to AJRC all the beans they ate in the region (In 1910 during Casement's journey) came from the Ucayali. AJRC P302

Hi Arawoke. Thank you for starting the article for Carlos Scharff. I've made some small copyedits, added categories, and requested rotation of one of the images used in the article. In fixing the layout, I moved the 'Further reading' section below the references. This created an additional reference below due to the sfn template. There are a couple of ways to fix this, but I thought you might have a preference. gobonobo + c 17:23, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the help with Scharff's article! Arawoke (talk) 14:08, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Short form references and no target errors

[edit]

Hi Arawoke. If you going to be using short form references, e.g. {{sfn}} templates, you may want to turn on the associated errors messages. Annoyingly they are by off by default. Category:Harv and Sfn template errors#Displaying error messages shows how to turn them on (it's not as difficult as that makes it seem, ask if you have any questions).
There are few issues with Carlos Scharff, which all look like minor typos. You added "Dole 1994" but only "Dole 1998" is defined, similarly "Roux 1998" when only "Roux 1994" is defined, and "Chandless 2018" with "Chandless 2008" being defined. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 14:29, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing that out! I thought I might have made the mistake once or twice but wasn't sure if that was the case. Those instances you have pointed out, I found with Ctrl + F and have been fixed as far as I can find. Also thank you for providing the error message link. Arawoke (talk) 14:39, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hope it's useful. If you have any issues drop a message on my talk page, I'm always willing to help -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 14:41, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Carlos Scharff

[edit]

On 29 December 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Carlos Scharff, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that rubber barons like Carlos Scharff enslaved indigenous populations in the Upper Amazon region during the rubber boom as a workforce for latex collection? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Carlos Scharff. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Carlos Scharff), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Peruvian Amazon Company

[edit]

Thank you very much! As you have read the article, I am actually curious on feedback from you. Specifically, regarding what further contribution of information should be made on the article. I have made many additions to the article and at the moment I'm unsure on which subjects warrant further development or the introduction of more information. Also, I am curious on your thoughts regarding the Saldana and Hardenburg subsections, should any information be excluded or more info included for clarification? I definitely have some citation work to develop in that area at the very least.
I also have another map of Arana's firm dated to 1906 which may be more relevant than the 1908 map currently included on the article
1906 map

vs 1908 map
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_the_Putumayo_river,_circa_1908._The_names_and_locations_of_rubber_plantations_are_included.png
I have access to a much better version of the 1906 map but its a recreation published by the Library of Ireland and I believe they have a copyright to that map. This document is located on slide 2 of this link https://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000722524

Offer of Collaboration

[edit]

Hello Arawoke, I just came across some of your edits while learning (for the first time somehow, and rather late in life at that!) about the horrific injustices perpetrated during the genocidal "rubber boom." I was interested in your username, as I studied briefly in the Caribbean (on the island of Montserrat), and noted the likely play on "Arawat"/"woke". Your user page indicates you are seeking collaborators for the important work you've undertaken, and I would like to "throw my hat in the ring" so to speak!

I have been an English language editor for 20 years, and I'm a member of the Copy Editors Guild, so at minimum I could tag in for any copy edits you'd like to request for articles you're working on submitting or improving. Despite completing coursework for a library science degree, I have been a bit intimidated to jump in with en.wiki's unique and complex referencing markup, so that's an area where I could potentially learn from following your examples and start practicing adding references.

My main career/area of expertise is technology, but I've found that to be a terrible frontier to contribute to on Wikipedia, with many aggressive "OWN"ership issues on various topics as well as a frequent occurrence of paid/COI contributors. I was so discouraged I almost quit editing en.wiki altogether. The crucial area you are focusing on documenting and expanding seems like a topic where I could learn a lot, as well as not bumping into so many aggressive editors with a secret agenda (though goodness knows, if the Amazon Rubber Company folks were still around today, they'd be trying to whitewash these pages in their favor).

Let me know what you think- I'm currently visiting family for ~2 weeks, and so I'm only set up to do copy editing, but upon my return home I could set up my computing environment to start finding and citing sources as well. My library science background leaves me well-suited to go looking for harder-to-find references, I've just been a bit nervous about the actual markup formatting and, of course, navigating which sources are reliable and which are not. I suspect that's a lot more straightforward when it comes to formal history than it is for emergent technologies in the present (it seems like about 90% of sources on tech do not, in fact, meet the definition of an "RS" here).

Thanks for your great work on this really important topic- I have been horrified to read of the conditions upon which this economic development in global history arose, the injustices were even worse than I could have imagined. To me, this drives home the importance of clear visibility for this topic, and spreading knowledge about it with clarity!

Best wishes, Chelsea aka Chiselinccc (talk) 14:31, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thank you for this offer! I did not learn about the effect the rubber boom had on indigenous populations until around 2020, I was introduced to this topic through The Putumayo, the Devil's Paradise, published in 1912 by Walter Ernest Hardenburg. Also, my name Arawoke is derived from the Arawak indigenous group, which populated a large part of the Caribbean. From what I understand, Arawak is the widest spread language family in South America. I have made the analogy before, that there were Arawak groups fighting Inca incursions into Bolivia, at the time that Christopher Columbus came into contact with Arawak people in Puerto Rico / Cuba.
This is unrelated, but one of the most important deponents that helped Roger Casement expose the Putumayo genocide, was a native of Montserrat named John Brown. Brown accompanied Eugene Robuchon before Robuchon's disappearance, and Brown later ended his employment with the Peruvian Amazon Company because of his experience at that time. Brown reported the abuse which he witnessed to Thomas W. Whiffen, Whiffen's report was one of the first indications of abuse occurring in the Putumayo that reached the British Foreign Office. This eventually led to Roger Casement's investigation. His testimony, along with 29 other testimonies from ex-Peruvian Amazon Company employees can be found on this source. https://www.google.com/books/edition/Slavery_in_Peru/Oy0UAAAAIAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=brown
Brown's deposition begins on page 407 ^
In my opinion, once you get experience with the citation system it becomes fairly easy, and many people are willing to work with you here, or correct any potential you make while citing a source. If I wanted to cite The Putumayo, the Devil's Paradise, I would type [1]. sfn stands for Short footnote, followed by the last name of the author, date, and page you want to cite. Later I can tell you how to cite sources with multiple authors, and how to use "English Footnotes" (efn) for future reference.
The subject of the rubber boom is absolutely a topic that I believe should have more information on wikipedia, and a subject where progress can be made. I will need to organize myself better for future research, but I have a decent grasp on the "Rubber barons" that I've been studying.
Here is my "sandbox" where most of my unpublished research goes
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Arawoke/sandbox
That research includes conclusions, leads that I want to follow up on, important quotes, citations and thoughts I want to develop further, the names of rubber barons, names of company directors, etc. I can elaborate upon anything that you are curious about on that page.
I am not sure which topic you would be interested in the most on this subject, so I will give you a small list of related articles you can investigate at your own leisure. Most of my research if focused on the Peruvian Amazon Company and the "criminal process" that occurred, but I've also been interested in several other rubber producing regions.
I do not want to scare you off from this topic by throwing "too much" information at you, so again, anything that you have questions about I can elaborate upon, and if you would like I can compile a comprehensive list of "cases" that I am interested in. Thank you for your offer once again! Arawoke (talk) 13:49, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi both, I stumbled upon the rubber subject recently while in Manaus, and was really impressed to see such great coverage on wiki about it. A really interesting subject. Your work is much appreciated. Ridiculopathy (talk) 05:59, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this message! Arawoke (talk) 12:46, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for the comprehensive comment. I have been editing the Liberal ship article alongside you and have started to read some of these sources more extensively. Are there any other specific articles that you would like help with? Infectedfreckle (talk) 03:04, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to have Liberal published before I start focusing on another article, however at the moment I have rough drafts open for Walter Ernest Hardenburg and another Iquitos based rubber baron named Luis Felipe Morey. I have been more focused on the "Putumayo" subject rather than those articles lately, specifically the Peruvian Amazon Company, the Putumayo genocide and Julio Cesar Arana articles. My sandbox contains a lot more information to add to those three articles: I would like some feedback regarding which areas on those articles should be prioritized in regards to further contribution and clarifications.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Luis_Felipe_Morey
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Walter_Ernest_Hardenburg
Some of the subjects I would like to specifically focus on in the future are:
(1)an article for the raids against La Union and La Reserva on January 12, 1908
(2)information on the involvement of the Peruvian military in the Putumayo atrocities
(2a)including the arrest of lieutenant Aurelio E. O'Donovan of the Peruvian military for trafficking Putumayo natives on the Hamburgo steamship
-2(b)information regarding the Peruvian military suppressing the rebellion at Atenas in 1916, the Yarocamena rebellion [which may have been the same rebellion as the Atenas insurrection, however historians can not specify this or not[2]], as well as a rebellion at Santa Catalina in 1917 [according to oral history, page 5-9 of HISTORIA DE LA ÚLTIMA HIJA DEL ÉXODO BORA, 2023]
(3)the fate of the "Putumayo criminals"
(3a) appearance of Victor Macedo, Carlos Miranda [chief of Sur] (at the Abuna River around the border of Brazil - Bolivia), Fidel Velarde [chief of Occidente] (travelling with Macedo), E. Mozambite (travelling with Macedo), Augusto Jimenez Seminario [chief of Morelia and from 1910-1911 Ultimo Retiro] (exploiting natives with Aguero on the Orton River near Riberalta under the company name "Cavero and Co. with financial assistance provided to the two of them by Francisco Suarez + agents of Suarez Hermanos), Abelardo Aguero [chief of Abisinia] around the Bolivian rubber estates of Nicolas Suarez Callau
3(b) information regarding Alfredo Montt and Jose Inocente on the run, and their employment in 1911 with "Edwards & Serra", a Brazilian rubber firm.[3]

(4) Corruption on the Putumayo subject, and government officials with relations to Casa Arana (4a) Amadeo Burga - Agent of Casa Arana and Commisario of the Napo River at the same time. (4b) Carlos Zapata - Prefect of Iquitos, supposedly bribed by Arana (4c) Carlos Rey de Castro - Peruvian consul-general to Manaus, indebted to Casa Arana in Manaus (4d) Juan Bautista Vega - Colombian consul-general to Iquitos around 1904, business partner of Arana (4e) Julio Ego-Aguierre - Lawyer for Arana and later senator of Loreto (4f) Demands from Peruvian politicians regarding the dismissal of Victor Macedo's arrest warrant. Information regarding the arrest warrants of Pablo Zumaeta and Julio Cesar Arana is desired. (4g) Cesar Lurquin - Comisario of the Putumayo River, Implicated by Walter E. Hardenburg with trafficking indigenous children while holding his government position.[a] (4h) Victor Macedo and "R. Coloma" as "Justice of the Peace" for the Putumayo while employed as agents of Arana's company.[5]

Feel free to inquire about any of this information to me, and I should be able to provide sources, quotes, etc. Arawoke (talk) 17:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Putumayo genocide

[edit]
Hi Arawoke, this is a long article and will probably take at least a week to copy-edit. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:12, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Arawoke, I've now finished my c/e. I added a [clarification needed] tag, which I placed in the first para of the section "The Peruvian Amazon Company", asks whether the Peruvian Amazon Rubber Company and the Peruvian Amazon Company refer to the same company; you might like to note any relationship between these companies for the reader, in either the article text or in a footnote. Also, the second para of "Rubber stations" has a [citation needed] tag on an uncited sentence. The remainder of the article is fairly straightforward. Good luck with it and cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:53, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Victor Macedo

[edit]
Thank you very much! Feel free to contact me regarding any information that you believe should be further elaborated upon or clarified. Arawoke (talk) 02:33, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Arawoke; I've now finished my copy-edit. I noted both British and American spellings and I wasn't sure which variety of English this should be in, so I chose American English to match the date style, though feel free to change to British or another variety if you wish. Considering the length of the article, I think the lede could be expanded to three or four paragraphs. I also think the article is somewhat unfocussed; we don't learn about Macedo's early life, though given his atrocities that information may not be available. Anyway, I think I've done what I can with it. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 04:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
