Depending on whether you have a static or dynamic IP, the actual person who made the edit may be within your household, or it could be someone else entirely. My advice would be to not worry about it, as no further disruption has come from this IP address since it was warned about the vandalism two weeks ago, and I am monitoring for additional problems if they arise (which would lead to further warnings or a block if vandalism from your IP was to resume). Hey DASonnenfeld, I'll take a look - unfortunately I don't readily have any secondary sources at my disposal, but it does seem that even basic info from primary sources could bring about some improvement there. I've also wanted to expand the article for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. I've been pretty slammed with field work lately (and I've got a brutal three weeks coming right up) so any significant work probably won't happen soon, but I agree it's needed! @MB:, thanks for the note. Many of New York's geographic features get sadly little attention in my opinion so it's nice to know someone else has eyes on a few of them as well (to hopefully catch my mistakes if nothing else!). Hopefully my edits there weren't too drastic, I started just to add coordinates via an infobox, felt compelled to get rid of the blatant POV that used to be in the lede, and then was having a hard time following the subject with the history and course of the river intertwined as it was... Undoubtedly there are still many improvements to be made. Although I worked in the region years ago, I don't recall spending any time on this particular stream, so any local knowledge is much appreciated. Big Moose Lake

Hello again. Just wondering what you think of Big Moose Lake. It mostly contains information about the lake, but includes some information on the nearby hamlet of Big Moose. The section "Neighboring communities" has a link to the hamlet, but there is no actual article on the hamlet - the link redirects to the lake. The circular link is obviously wrong. Would you suggest splitting out the info on the hamlet into its own article? There are lots of little hamlets without articles; not sure if Big Moose really warrants an article. An alternative would be to redirect Big Moose, New York to Webb, New York and expand on the hamlet there. (Some cleanup is definitely needed - the lead says that the lake has "residents"). Hi MB, thanks for the query. Without knowing much (well, anything) about the lake and its communities, I think the simplest solution in the short term would be to call out the hamlet in the lede, and refactor the text a bit to be clear when one subject or the other is being referred to. This may be best even more long-term, since most of the history section is referring to events in the region of the lake (including events that occurred on the lake, involving inhabitants of the community), at least as far as I can tell. Certainly I think someone with more knowledge, sources, and ambition to expand the topic could easily make a separate article for the hamlet (and the information about camps, etc. would be best to include there if such an article is made), but I'm not that person. I'm going to take a brief stab at cleanup based in the above (and will try to tone down some of the promo language as well); let me know what you think. Thanks! Hy MB, sorry I misinterpreted - I didn't mean to get in the way of your planned edits. (That's just almost exactly the sort of article I most enjoy tinkering with, it was hard not to tidy up a few things there upon seeing it!) I still think the hamlet could qualify for a standalone article if a few more sources can be found (most of what is specific to the hamlet is unsourced currently, with the exception of the source you added re: palisades), but most of what's there seems to fit OK with the article taking a carefully regional approach to the subject - the lake does seem to be what defines the region. My edits were mainly to clear up the confusion you rightly described in your first post, but I think there's a lot of potential for expansion either way. Mohawk River

Why would you change that back. It doesn't say main tributaries it says tributaries. What I did gave people more information and helped them understand more about what makes the Mohawk River. NY hamlets

Hello again,

I've took a look at one of the many recent edits of the central NY creek articles and noticed Cincinnati Creek was created and says it is located in Mapledale, Oneida County, New York.

Mapledale is a hamlet in the town of Trenton. I doubt it should ever have an article because unless proven otherwise, it's probably just a little used name of a few houses at a cross of two roads like thousands of other places in NY. But the name did make it into the GNIS and USGS Water databases.

Should I change the article to say the creek is in Trenton, New York, or just redirect Mapledale to Trenton?

Since the name is minimally used, probably a redirect is best. I don't see a trend to create one-line articles that say foo is a populated place located at Coord x,y and elevation z. I'm looking for your opinion because those kind of articles have been added in Arizona for every place that appears in the GNIS database without regard for noteability. I've tried PROD and AFD, but enough editors seem to believe that inclusion in a government database means they are "legally recognized" which satisfies GEOLAND. The articles will most likely never be anything more and I think listing them as "Communities and locations in their town/county", as is usually done in NY, is better and removes a lot of clutter. "Legally recognized" means some level of government has created the entity, usually with borders and some level of authority. A mapping agency acknowledging that a name has had some historical usage is much different. MB 16:15, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Hey MB, nice to hear from you. Sorry for the delayed response, work and camping has kept me away from editing lately, as happens every spring it seems...

In my experience, the creation of articles for hamlets in NY is patchy; a lot of the state isn't covered as such, but my old home county, Erie County, does have articles for every hamlet; most are approximately 99% infobox, which I think is less-than-ideal. Personally, I think such zero-info articles are better handled as you suggest above, with a redirect to the relevant town article and coverage in a "Communities and locations" section, but I don't really feel strongly either way. If redirected, it would probably be best to leave any links specific to the hamlet pointing to the redirect per WP:NOTBROKEN, so personally I would not change the location to Trenton especially since it is sourced by USGS.

However, I have seen, on occasion, a hamlet article expanded, usually when someone with an understanding of local history drops in. Griffins Mills, New York is one example; although the sourcing is poor, it's the result of information from offline sources being added by an amateur with a poor understanding of our referencing standards. Nothing malicious or deeply concerning in my eyes, but it does show the sort of info that is possibly available for these places. Whether most of the info is WP:MILL is perhaps worthy of debate. And unfortunately, these articles are like as not to become magnets for promotional editing and original research.

Deep down, I think I'm a bit more inclusionist than you may be for these small topics, as I see WP:GEOLAND's requirement for legal recognition as simply a proxy for the likely availability of extended info in offline sources (USBGN assesses common usage before assigning a name, so inclusion in GNIS is a pretty good indicator of sources existing somewhere, and I guess I'm an eventualist who isn't so bothered by short articles). I like how separate articles for geographic subjects allows for easier integration with WikiData and WikiMiniAtlas. The creation of these stubs could also be seen as a way of making them available for expansion for users with access to local history sources, who often are not wiki power users and may be intimidated by article creation, or make a bungle of it. However, I don't believe this so strongly as to make a habit of creating such stubs myself and certainly understand how they can be seen as a net negative when created in bulk. It would be nice if they were more frequently developed past the single-sentence stage within a town article prior to being split off, at least.

Anyway, I clearly have opinions on this but no strong feelings, as mentioned. I like your redirect solution, especially if you're looking for a quick fix for a redlink. Take care - Antepenultimate (talk) 00:01, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

You answered in about a day and a half. That was plenty quick enough considering the lack of importance here. I created a redirect for Mapledale. I'm just not as optimistic as you that actual articles for many of these hamlets can ever be created. I've done work on other towns in Oneida county using "A Descriptive Work on Oneida County, Wager, 1896" and in checking that, there is no mention of Mapledale. The town of Trenton website lists its hamlets and doesn't include Mapledale. Trenton, New York doesn't say it's a hamlet, just a "location". There is a Mapledale Road, and where it intersects with Rt.12 are about a half-dozen businesses including a drug store, bank, liquor store, etc. That is the Mapledale commercial district, which in my opinion puts this on par with a very minor neighborhood or small strip mall - neither which would warrant an article just for existing. But it is listed in GNIS as a "populated place". Then a few hundred feet down the road is a trailer park with about 50 lots called "Mapledale Acres", which is also a GNIS populated place. And a couple of towns away in Paris, New York at the intersection of a different Mapledale Rd & Hardscrable Rd is Oneida County's third Mapledale, another GNIS populated place. From imagery, it looks to have just a few houses in the area. So I'm not convinced we should have articles on every GNIS named place. I really question the bit about common usage. From examples like this, I have come to believe that if the name is or ever was on a map then GNIS recognizes it. No need to answer, I guess I am just venting. You said what you think already and we are really not very far apart. By the way, I lived in Erie County too, for five years when attending UB. MB 02:43, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Cincinnati Creek

Another question. I looked at google maps for this creek and found something curious. This map [1] shows the name Cincinnati Creek at the point where it joins West Canada, but then labels it as Mud Creek. If you follow the creek west on the map, the label eventually changes to Cincinnati Creek. The GNIS database says the only Mud Creek in Oneida county is in New Hartford/Utica. Would you just ignore this and chalk it up to a google error? MB 16:27, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

Hey MB, I've seen Google disagree with GNIS several times. I think I would have to trust GNIS in a pinch; the other day I was able to correct a Gmaps business listing with a few clicks of my phone. Now I'm an honest guy and I thought it was neat that they'd let me do that, but it did make me question the veracity of the information it contains if it's essentially a wiki now (having seen how the sausage is made here, especially). I can't seem to quickly find out what their sources for geographic features are - another reason I'd probably not treat Gmaps as a reliable source for much. By the way, out of curiosity I just loaded up my NY National Hydrography Dataset file into a GIS; it confirms that what Google is calling 'Mud Creek' is actually Cincinatti Creek. Navbox

Hello. I noticed an editor has added the Hudson River Watershed navbox to dozens of articles on cities/towns that fall within the Hudson drainage. See Herkimer, New York as an example. I really don't find this useful. There just isn't a clear enough relationship between these places. The list is probably missing as many places as it includes. But what is the purpose? Should there be a navbox of Places in New York, Towns that start with the letter H, Atlantic Ocean watershed, Places on earth? There has to be a line drawn somewhere, and I think this has gone too far and I see it as useless clutter in the article. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on this? MB 03:41, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards.
