Election results graph
[edit]I like the graph you added to United States presidential election, 2008, but please see commons:Image talk:Election-state-04-08.png for some suggestions on how to make it even better. - dcljr (talk) 06:36, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the comments and for pointing me towards them! Anguswalker (talk) 10:03, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi Anguswalker,
In case you don't see my response to your discussion on The Apprentice discussion page, I thought I would copy my message here:
Many thanks for your contribution. Historically, all the series weekly results tables have been determined by team. Now you are suggesting to determine results by winning or losing. IMHO the table is a summary of the events that occurred. Looking at your new way of colouring confuses how you look at the table. I am sorry but I will revert your changes until there is a consensus about changing colours for ALL the series tables. If there is strong support for the change then by all means make the changes.
Many thanks, δ²(Talk) 11:55, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, some idiot seemed to have reverted my comments on the discussion page, so I have now put them back so that a discussion can be started. I understand your point of view and appreciate that any efforts to improve an article are welcome, however I think that such a decision needs to be reached via consensus. I shall continue my comments on the discussion page. Many thanks, δ²(Talk) 12:46, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of 2009 flu pandemic table
[edit]A proposed deletion template has been added to the article 2009 flu pandemic table, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:
All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Articles for deletion nomination of 2009 flu pandemic table
[edit]I have nominated 2009 flu pandemic table, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2009 flu pandemic table. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Douglasr007 (talk) 18:52, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Country link
[edit]Hi, when you update the Flu pandemic page, can you please make it a habit to not link to Macedonia directly, but to [[Republic of Macedonia|Macedonia]] or [[Macedonia (country)|]]? "Macedonia" is a disambiguation page, not the country article. I've now corrected that link four times on this single page, but you keep changing it back. Fut.Perf. ☼ 17:17, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. First of all, thanks for your outstanding contributions. I was wondering if you could please send me the source for this graph you made. Thanks. --Mazewaxie (talk • contribs) 17:45, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Mazewaxie, I made it myself in Excel using the data from the WHO situation reports.
2019–20 coronavirus pandemic cases (Data Corrections and Data Entry)
[edit]On 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic cases I have found some data mistakes. As I don't know your process (ie possibly you are maintaining a separate offline source file), I am giving you the info here.
I have written some parsers (shell scripts) that parse the first 2 columns from WHO situation reports and the Wikipedia table. I maybe able to help you with entering the data (or at least checking it).
--Wpliu (talk) 05:54, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Wpliu, thank you for spotting these errors. I do check that the entries add up to the correct total, but I'm clearly sometimes getting individual entries the wrong way round. You're right that I am using a spreadsheet that I then copy over, so would overwrite your corrections if you made them - at least until the end of the half month. I don't have the skills to grab the data automatically but don't mind doing it each day - I am in isolation myself so it's something to do! Anguswalker (talk) 09:17, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
I am sharing my parsing results from the WHO Situation Reports at
https://my.owndrive.com/index.php/s/NzzSJtzxTM6rfbX
It takes me <10min to do 1 day. You can use it if you want. --Wpliu (talk) 19:41, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, that did save time! Are you planning on parsing the death figures too?
I can only do the first 2 columns. This is entirely technical.
When the table is copied from the pdf it doesn't copy over as a table as spaces are used for delimiting fields. The problem is that there are spaces in the data values and specifically some of the numbers. So I cannot differentiate whether a number has an embedded space or if it is two numbers in two different columns.
I am getting by because the country names don't have numbers, the numbers are only characters [0-9] (possibly with embedded spaces) and there are only 2 columns. My field separator is actually [non-number][space][number]. I am already manually fixing situations where multi-line country names are split across pages.
I am using Foxit Reader rather than Acrobat Reader because Acrobat Reader has completely unusable output (everything ends up in 1 column).
Found inconsistencies. If this is errata, then it should probably be footnoted.

I have a partial solution for the Who Situation Report death figures. I have parsed the entire table from the situation reports, but eliminated the lines with the subtotal and the total.

Pandemic data reverts
[edit]You have reverted my edits by changing US->USA in one of the tables twice now, without any comment. Please stop. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic_cases&oldid=952543847
I personally don't care if it's US or USA, I am editing for consistency across tables. Kirils (talk) 09:11, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- I have changed it to US, it was happening because I replace the whole table each time. Not sure why US is preferable to USA?
- And now seems that someone has edited all the other tables so it's "USA" everywhere except the newest table. Could you please used that now. I personally think USA is preferable however what's most important for the reader is to have consistency between tables. Your work is much appreciated. Kirils (talk) 08:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Covid-19 Days to Double Metric Calculation
[edit]I was updating the Cov-19 cases and you beat me to it by 8 mins.
- Ah sorry, the situation report came out late and your figures came out after I'd retired for the night Anguswalker (talk) 07:27, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. I just thought you might need some help. Updating 200 numbers accurately every day is a substantial amount of work.
FYI, I might be able to give you the data part of the wiki table based on the existing table and appending the new numbers. The table needs to exist already though. This may not be a benefit to you since you are maintaining your own data files.
--Wpliu (talk) 19:31, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
I have a question about the "Days to double".
I have not found this value in the situation reports. It appears that you are looking back for the day that had a World total less than half of the current day and counting the number of days in between.
I am not sure if this is the normal convention. As, this methods tells what was, rather than what will be. The doubling time (kind of the opposite of half life) is only useful in the early stage of the pandemic where exponential growth is occurring. Consequently, taking a local slope and extrapolating forward in time is probably more appropriate.
- Maybe not and perhaps I should call it something else - 'days since half', or something? Anguswalker (talk) 07:27, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
I think 'days since half' is a better label.
However, thinking more about this. Consider SARS 1. The current 'days since half' would be about 17 years. Not exactly a good metric indicative that the pandemic is over.
--Wpliu (talk) 19:31, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
I don't know what the definition is for this value. Have you found a definition for this?
I should say, I don't like this value beyond the exponential stage. Pretty much all the 2nd wave countries are out of the exponential growth stage now. Any metrics that only uses a single value of the total number of cases are not that useful long term (differences are ok). If you want a better value for the doubling time, just wait. Wait 10 years then the doubling time will be 5 years (backwards difference, 10 years forward difference).
FYI. The best metric is daily increase per capita. That is what I plotted on my charts.

I am probably going to be late or may miss the day entirely.
I will only do the full table for there days as it is easier for me to do that remotely and it has both sets of data that you use.

WHO Situation Reports format (weekly) 2020-08-17 onwards
[edit]https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports/
It appears that they have changed to a weekly summary.
I suggest we wait 1 day and see if they continue updating the daily reports.
If not then we need to decide what to do.
Wpliu (talk) 04:18, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Weekly report

- Thanks, it's the same totals as the 16 August daily report, so I guess we wait until next week for new figures? Anguswalker (talk) 18:27, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
- I have just discovered that they are still producing daily data at this page, and a full CSV can be downloaded https://covid19.who.int/table
- This is what I have been looking for all along.
- Do you want me to continue with the now weekly report? Wpliu (talk) 18:02, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- No need, if you can use this one, although it seems to update frequently. Once a new day's figures start appearing, presumably the previous day is complete? Anguswalker (talk) 18:20, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Daily report data I have put the data in a database and have reformatted it in a conventional table Countries/Dates

- Hi, the dates are coming up as 2020-01-01 etc, and the numbers as zero FYI. In fact the WHO CSV works OK for me now so I don't think I need your parsing of it from now on. Thank you very much for doing it over the last few months though, it saved me a lot of time!
Totals
[edit]Hi there. Thank you for all the great work you've been doing with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_cases#Second_half_8 . It's really appreciated. Just a quick questions - are the World totals for Sep 21 and Sep 22 correct? I can't seem to find that data in the WHO .csv file to double check. Thanks! :) NoWikiNoLife 22:56, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
- No, you're right, thanks for spotting, now corrected. Anguswalker (talk) 08:34, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your COVID stats work!
[edit]Hi Anguswalker,
I saw that you've been working on keeping COVID-19_pandemic_cases up to date – you're amazing :) Not sure if you're aware, but the data from this page (and now the monthly pages) is being picked up by Google and shown in Google Search and their COVID stats tracker (i.e., this). If you're planning to create the new page for November daily stats, would you mind giving me a ping before you do so, so I can update the Google team to switch over to the current month's page and avoid any breakage/gap in reporting? There's also a mailing list that some folks from WikiProject COVID-19 and the Google team are monitoring (covid-19-statslists.wikimedia.org) – highly encourage you to join and post there, if you'd like :) You can subscribe here.
Massive thank-you again for your hard work on this (and swine flu)!
Maryana (WMF) (talk) 22:22, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, will do! How do I give you a ping? Anguswalker (talk) 09:11, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- Great, thank you! You can leave a note on my talk page or email me at mpinchukwikimedia.org. Much appreciated :) Maryana (WMF) (talk) 13:50, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for COVID-19 pandemic deaths#Monthly totals
[edit]Thanks for COVID-19 pandemic deaths#Monthly totals.
That table is enlightening. It clearly shows when any country peaked, slowed down, and started climbing up rapidly in deaths again.
It shows how pathetically some countries (US, UK, Brazil, etc.) are doing when compared with other countries. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:25, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message
[edit]Date of first death in United States
[edit]Hello! I wanted to let you know that the date of the first death in the United States listed at COVID-19 pandemic deaths is incorrect. The date is listed as 3 March but the actual first death was 6 February, according to these sources here, here, and here. Could you take a look at this? Thank you in advance! Herbfur (Eric, He/Him) (talk) 15:45, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message. The page records deaths as reported to WHO, and the first death was indeed reported on 3 March. I think it is more useful if it uses a consistent source rather than any source, however reliable. Anguswalker (talk) 20:44, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Understood, thank you for your response. Would you be OK with adding a note to the article explaining this? Herbfur (Eric, He/Him) (talk) 17:32, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- I think there should be a note explaining that this is old info as first reported by WHO in their daily situation reports. And that we are keeping that date as an historical record. Also, we should note that we are doing this because it would be way too time-consuming to vet updates for a couple hundred countries.
- I am not wedded to this though, and if someone wants to do that vetting, then I am OK with that too. But from my experience with country lists it is much better for one's sanity to use only one source, and let them do the vetting.
- It would be nice if WHO had a first death list that they continually updated. Or John Hopkins. Do either of those trusted sources have one yet?
- In the meantime I added this note to the 2020 section:
- COVID-19 pandemic deaths#2020
- "First death" column is for first reported death by WHO in their daily situation reports, and is kept as an historical record. Earlier deaths, as they are found by others, will have to go in another article.
- Feel free to clarify it. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:53, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
Day to day COVID-19 numbers
[edit]Where did you get day-to-day numbers of the number of COVID-19 cases for articles like COVID-19 pandemic cases in April 2021? (I have only found the weekly updates.) Your sources need to be added as references. Velayinosu (talk) 01:51, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- They are from https://covid19.who.int/WHO-COVID-19-global-data.csv - I agree, I (or someone) should add them as references. Anguswalker (talk) 18:19, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
Updates for August 1
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your great work updating COVID-19 pandemic cases and COVID-19 pandemic deaths. Will you have time soon to add data for August 1? Many thanks! (talk) 7:50, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- Now added, sorry for the delay. Although someone's changed the format so I have probably partly reverted to the previous format Anguswalker (talk) 14:41, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. Someone reverted your August 9 edit on COVID-19 pandemic deaths. I think you might have inadvertently copy-pasted data from your 'new cases' file instead of 'deaths' file.

COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021 moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. - Onel5969. I undid your move to draft space. See: COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021. These monthly Covid death pages have been created for many months. It is referenced. You are not an admin, and you should discuss before such major actions. Or go thru WP:AFD. --Timeshifter (talk) 08:00, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Timeshifter, sorry. They are not referenced. While the site that is listed in the footnote may contain this information somewhere, that does not satisfy WP:VERIFY. You need to be able to use the reference to go directly to the information being cited. In other words, you can't simply put "Encyclopedia Brittanica" and say an article is "referenced". As per WP policy, uncited material may be removed at any time, and as per WP:BURDEN, may not be re-added without providing a valid reference which meets WP:VERIFY. Onel5969 TT me 11:55, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Onel5969, sorry. The pages you moved to draft space are referenced. And the WP policies you referenced are for removing material, not whole pages. Whole pages requires WP:AFD. Stop edit warring, or you could be blocked. You moved the May 2021 pages to draft space without discussion, after my above posts. Discussion is the normal way before deleting major amounts of material. Reread the WP policies you linked to. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:06, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Timeshifter, sorry, you are incorrect. Both about them being referenced so as to pass WP:VERIFY, and regarding material/whole pages. Whole pages which are unsourced do not need to go to AfD. Uncited material, whether portions or whole pages, can be removed at any time. I suggest you re-read those policies. If you can quote to me where it says that removing uncited material is never for whole articles, I'd appreciate it. Onel5969 TT me 17:14, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed." - Onel5969. There is nothing on those WP policy pages that mention converting whole pages to draftspace. On the contrary it mentions asking for citations, discussion, and other more polite interactions. Please stop your edit warring. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:09, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Timeshifter, you evaded my question. There is, as pointed out above, a policy regarding removing "all material" without valid citations. There is no qualification there. It doesn't say, "all material, except when the entire article is unsourced". AfD is not about VERIFY, it's for notability concerns. Please learn WP and guidelines. Ignoring those policies can be construed as disruptive editing. Onel5969 TT me 18:22, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
- Onel5969. WP:AFD is the only way I know of for deleting whole articles. If you continue your edit warring you may be blocked. The articles are referenced adequately. You have not shown otherwise. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:34, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

- I see that you started a deletion discussion:
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021.
- This is a long series of monthly articles using the same reference. So this can not be credibly claimed as a new article. So when in doubt one should do as you did and go through WP:AFD. The referenced WP:Village pump (policy) discussion just below my comment is very clear. See closed discussion.
- WP:DRAFTIFY redirects to:
- Wikipedia:Drafts#Moving articles to draft space. From that article:
- "It is not intended as a backdoor route to deletion."
- At the top of that page is this (emphasis added):
- "This page is intended to provide additional information about concepts in the page(s) it supplements. This page is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community."
- WP:Drafts links to:
- Wikipedia:Deletion policy#Incubation. From that section (emphasis added):
Because many drafts are not regularly reviewed, unilaterally moving articles to draft space ("draftifying") should generally be done only for newly created articles (as part of new page review or otherwise) or as the result of a deletion discussion. Incubation is not intended to be a "backdoor route to deletion".[1]

Updates for September 1

- I am currently rather demoralised because all my deaths pages have been deleted. Do you know how to try to get them reinstated? Anguswalker (talk) 08:13, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- Jumping in here. Wikipedia:Deletion Review. Before going there I would review the following:
- Talk:COVID-19 pandemic deaths#Monthly cumulative death pages with daily data have been deleted. Need external links
- User talk:Sandstein#Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/COVID-19 pandemic deaths in July 2021
- User:Timeshifter/Sandbox157
- Talk page discussions will eventually be archived. Find the discussions in the archives when that happens.
- You might also consider contacting Our World in Data (OWID), and asking them to archive the death tables. OWID allows everything on their site to be shared with a CC-BY license. I, and others, have uploaded many of their charts and graphs to Wikipedia. See official website. Wikipedia could link to those death tables from external link sections of Wikipedia articles.
- If OWID agrees you can ask admins at WP:Refund to give you access to the deleted pages in order to copy them, and share them with OWID. I think OWID is hiring too. :)

NoWikiNoLife and Anguswalker. I added the Sep 1, 2021 column for deaths. I updated all the 2021 numbers from the WHO .csv source file. I removed the first death column because it now makes the table too wide for narrower screens. Also because there is no real verifiable reference for it. And because random editors come by and change the first death dates for various countries according to individual (often unvetted) media articles. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:18, 11 September 2021 (UTC)
