One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves! Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. While I certainly understand the "don't bite the newbies" argument, I think there may be dangers to your strategy. Describing an RfA candidate as "awesome" when they aren't is, in the end, dishonest. I don't think WP:BITE calls for us to lie to the user, just not be harsh to them. The danger is the candidate may end up thinking "I am a good RfA candidate: look Andy, who is a respected editor, thought I was awesome, those other opinions must be just wrong". If may mislead people into thinking they have a chance at annother RfA sooner than they realistically do. Worse it might give them the impression that they failed because the "cabal" was out to get them, rather than because they legitimately weren't ready. That path leads to a very disgruntled user.

So I'm not so much worried by the fact that you are supporting a failing candidate - I personally don't like "moral support" !votes, but I do understand the intention behind them. Its the fact that you are misleading the candidate about why you are supporting them that worries me.

Spyware Link

Andy,

I noticed you removed a link to my how to article (http://pcs. suite101.com/article.cfm/i_ve_got_spyware_) on removal of spyware. I guess my real question is why you removed mine but the 2 links right above mine you left intact.

In my article I have 2 in depth tutorials on how to use spybot S&D and ad-aware. Granted, they are links but they both give good information not covered in either of the other articles. I was just wondering if you could give me some insight as to why you removed them.

CAT:CSD hint removal

I completly disagree with this statement. It is like saying that this is a job that the admins have to do. It is not. Having the admins do the patroling reduces the time that they have for other admin activities. Some editors are already complaining that the admins are not doing editing since they are only doing admin work. Having all editors do the screening takes a large amount of work away from the admins and allows them to spend more time on admin activities like doing deletes. Patroling takes more time then reviewing the nominations and deleting those that need deleting, or moving to prod or moving to AfD or cleaning up or just pulling the tag. Statements that make it sound like admins have to do this are not helpful in my opinion. We should be pushing to have users do as much as they can and that's doing the patroling. One other point that you may be missing. I do ocassionally patrol new pages. In almost every case, I do not do a delete but add a speedy tag since I believe that I should not make a decision on my own. Yes, there will always be a few cases where the decision is obvious. Yea, I could be more bold. I know that my deletes are not approved by everyone given the trashing of my user and discussion page, saved by the bots!. Maybe at some point I will be bolder. I also skip quite a few and have also been accused of being too quick to pull the trigger. I have come to the conclusion that there is no perfect balance. No matter what you do, you will piss off someone. In any case, I still try to do some editing. If I was scanning the new pages I would not have time to do much else. Part of the burnout problem is there is too much to do. I think that we could do more good on the new page patrol if we could get the users to post a warning to the editors page when they add the notice. Vegaswikian 19:49, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

On colors

The only reason it was lavender was to match the portal keyhole and video game infobox. Seeing as the temp. is no longer near them, it could really be any color. RE: IP Block

Hi there Andeh! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, but I stand by the block. At first glance, it might seem a bit harsh to completely write off the user without prior notification/warnings, it's clear from the contributions that the only purpose is to disrupt Wikipedia. The block is for anonymous users only and there's nothing to prevent the user(s) of the IP from creating an account and continue editing. Well of course, until the BOT went and b*gg*red things up by replacing the original boxes, people weren't seeing the left box! Although I see the point of migrating boxes in the general space across to userspace (esp. where they are very specific or esoteric), you can hardly blame people who had perfectly ok boxes before, that now have the mess as seen on the left. That's like blaming the guy who parks his car on a road with no lines for the fine he gets when the roadworkers come and paint lines under his wheels while he's away... ;) - HTUK 20:32, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Userbox migration scope

Hey, thanks for trying to help, but I really don't think the userbox migration is supposed to migrate all userboxes - only the controversial POV ones. Things like the above astronomy interest userbox are helpful to the project and should be encouraged (i.e. they should remain in Template space). I posted something about this at Wikipedia talk:German userbox solution#Scope_of_page. If you don't agree, please still stop moving boxes while this is cleared up. —AySz88\^-^ 20:15, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for thinking you were the one who was migrating the boxes. (The fact that someone migrated a box and left the task of changing the links to someone else is even more of an annoyance.) However, the snipplets you cited on my talk page don't seem to contradict the fact that the migration on the English Wikipedia is not supposed to migrate all userboxes; the first one is part of Jimbos' paraphrase of something said by someone else (i.e. he's not suggesting it), and the second one is just a little bit of explanation of how the Germans did it. The section under that clarifies the issue: "Examples [of boxes that should be kept in Template space] include those related to claiming professional or academic expertise, WikiProject affiliations, and claiming access to specialized resources and a willingness to conduct research using them upon request. Templates for these userboxes could stay in template or project space. Controversial and unencyclopedic userbox templates should be moved to user space." This list of examples doesn't explicitly say anything like "browser" or the such, but I think it's fairly obvious that, if one takes them in good faith, they lie within the general idea of "useful information about the user".
