Comments, (with History), and at least 1 Article question

[edit]

(Data as why I'm asking You, and my History). I found you on Peter Coxhead's talk page,-(and there's so few dedicated females in Wikipedia) and see you are a Computer-person, and Wikipedian "Analyzer-Historian(?)". I'll ask a question, but first: I made lots of categories, and sometimes articles, (so as to create the category for them: Category:Kudurru boundary stones-a Weekend Google Effort)....(Now articles are being made for the clay tablet histories)(I recently started categorizing the items in Wikicommons for "Category:Clay tablets", and a new supercategory for "Archaeolgical clay objects".)... I DO NOT believe standard, definitional history, as taught or "expoused". I made the Debate between bird and fish (~2100 BC) because after doing 2-6 years of Hieroglyphs, then also intermingling the Amarna letters and Cuneiform-(in Wikicommons, you can find: Category:Hieroglyphs on media, then I did Category:Cuneiform on media).

The bottom line is that Wikipedia is just now revealing the 'Other History' , the real history before Greece, the beginning of the Iron Age, (after the Dark Years)... Nike, the Goddess of Victory is the Egyptian Branch (hieroglyph), (and see the Cat: Category:Egyptian hieroglyphs-Gardiner listed... (Not one other person, (basically) has added an article since I started the 50+ I've made-(I Will Tip My Hat To The First Human- (or Alien)!))-(and see the List of Egyptian hieroglyphs by common name: A-L, and M-Z.... --(now being interrupted by real events)-----I am an Existentialist, and consider the Epic of Gilgamesh, reworked by the scribes, for centuries, an "existential" examination of US humans, our lives, our lifestyles. I kindof don't understand how the Article, Existentialism is only related to the Literary Genre. And this "birth stuff" kind of like religion is part of Existentialism-Article-Definition... so this existentialist, ME(my definition of it), am a huge believer in the Power of Wikipedia; when One creates an article or categories, they are actually driving the direction of Wikipedia. I made the category for Category:Clay tablets, (and just recently, Category:Ancient Near and Middle East clay objects).

I spent weekends on topics: Category:Gulf of California (actually Fri, Sat, Sunday, finished late in afternoon, whooooaaaa.--(went through the 1500+ article links to Gulf of California)) And near the beginning of my Wikipedia history, doing Trees, Plants, Flora, and Birds... a 7-day week off-(vacation) turned into 9-days, 2 weekends, with Central America, then South America, and then the Caribbean Categories.... the Category:Birds of South America by region started out as by country, then I realized the regions (including the Falkland Islands, the Pantanal, the Guianas, the Amazon Basin, Cerrado, Caatinga, etc, etc. required, "by region"--(3 years later, somebody just recently created the "Category:Andes region")--Category:Birds of the Andes)--I would have done it... (but to me I couldn't define it...Not knowledeable Enuff)).

You get the picture how intensity of Focus, leads to interesting Results on wikipedia. My 1 question for now: I made the (category) and the Libyan Palette article. In looking at the 4 other Language versions of Libyan Palette, the first (unreadable on my computer) has a Photo, (not in WikiCommons).. so how do I (Easily, & Quickly) contact a Wikipedian to assist in getting the Photo-(in whatever language it is) to Commons?.--(from the the HOT-SonoranDesert, ArizonaUSA... --Mmcannis (talk) 18:27, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I got the above message from a Wikipedia editor, with a question in the last paragraph (I separated it from the rest of the message to make it easier to read) Does anyone know who she wants to contact?

I placed the request because I don't know how to help Mmcannis. She asked me who to contact to move a photo, and I don't know who to contact. Thank you! Amy Z (talk) 18:24, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll post on Mmcannis's talkpage also. I could move the photo, but I don't think it is a free image. There are several copies on the internet (eg [1]) - I believe it is scanned from a book. I suspect the page relating to the image on amharic wiki says that, but as it just looks like a bunch of squiggles to me too, I don't know for certain.Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:08, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy to fix any errors or the syntax of any sentence that is confusing, but you will have to give me some clues. So I suggest you list and/or quote on the talk page of the article (Talk:John Payne (engraver)) any problems you think it contains and then we can fix them. -- PBS (talk) 05:46, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is the page better now? If not then please explain on the article talk page what else you think, would help you. However this is not my area of expertise, and I only created this article because I expanded one on Sir Robert Peake and needed to link to this man. My interest in Sir Robert Peake is his involvement in the siege of Basing House. -- PBS (talk) 09:03, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but i have no knowledge of Tahar Cherif El-Ouazzani, so i can't really "improve" the article. The only reason i published the Hocine Khalfi article is because he was my grandfather.. Research project feedback suggestion

[edit]

Perhaps it would be a good idea to use an article creator's edit count as a factor as to the feedback they receive when you're doing a new page patrol; this ensures that you are helping the right people and that you don't come off as condescending to older users. I believe this opinion is somewhat expanded in the essay Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars. You can find a user's edit count by simply mousing over their name with WP:POPUPS enabled (in case you hadn't noticed). In this particular example, I'd say that a user with over 3k edits will probably know what a wikilink is. I'd also suggest that not all redlinks are bad or "broken"- to me, they simply indicate a subject that the encyclopedia does not currently cover; a bit of a philosophical difference. Good luck with your research; I've got plenty of friends that study social media at the Georgia Institute of Technology, so I know what it's like. :) —Disavian (talk/contribs) 15:40, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't make new articles all that often, but here's a quick brainstorm of suggestions for higher edit count users:
  1. If it fits the rules thereof, you could suggest that they nominate it for DYK. I use User:Shubinator/DYKcheck to quickly see if it fits the rules.
  2. Many experienced users don't use citation templates, that might be a good next step for them.
  3. You may want to suggest an appropriate infobox template if one isn't already present on the article
  4. Suggest a free image about the subject from flickr (a quick cc-by search on the subject should be easy to automate or add to the article toolbox, for example, toast)
  5. Suggest adding links to the article from relevant disambiguation pages or suggest redirects that would make sense for the article and are easy to overlook
I'm sure there are other suggestions. I'm not saying that over a certain amount of edits that users know everything, just that you have to take a more refined approach. :)

Indian assembly constituency pages

[edit]

Thanks for your note on Hasanpur (Vidhan Sabha constituency).

I am not able to get your point about section headings. There are around 400 pages following this pattern. The pattern is: 1. Introductory lead 2. Extent – it shows the area it covers. 3. Results with years.

In India, six or seven state assembly (Vidhan Sabha) constituencies form part of a parliamentary (Lok Sabha) constituency. This could have a separate section, but since this generally is a single sentence, I have put it under “Extent”.

You can also have a look into one or two other pages that have somewhat more information – Krishnanagar Uttar (Vidhan Sabha constituency) and Diamond Harbour (Vidhan Sabha constituency). A cursory glance at the page history shows that these pages have come up in stages.

Another editor working on similar pages uses a different format – see Ater (Vidhan Sabha constituency).

I look forward to your suggestions and comments.

Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 16:46, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have uploaded some pages with revised sub-headings. Please have a look – Khagaria (Vidhan Sabha constituency). Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 14:39, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They are definitely a lot mroe clear now! Sorry it took me a while to get back to you, I've had a lot to deal with. However, I do think it is much clearer when it specifies that they are "election results." Also, I can understand using "extent," but I thought it was a little unclear as to the extent of what.
Thanks, I will get ahead with that. - Chandan Guha (talk) 12:03, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image for The Someday Funnies, etc

[edit]

Hello Amy, and thanks for your message. Yes, I personally think it is really nice to get some feedback, and no I don't mind being part of the experiment. One small thing, when you leave a message, try to remember to sign it yourself with four of these "~" and then SineBot does not have to sign it for you.

Actually, when I got your message, I was greatly hoping you were interested in National Lampoon and would be able to tell me more about what you thought needed doing or correcting, what you thought of the newly expanded National Lampoon navigational template, and was hoping I could maybe even encourage you to help me with my current short-term expansion of the coverage of NatLamp-related productions. But when I saw the feedback was part of an experiment, although I am very happy this research is being done, I was a little bit disappointed because that means I can't really invite you to work with me on this particular short-term project. (When someone leaves a message on your talk page about one particular subject, it usually means that they are seriously interested in that subject.)

Anyway, my husband and I are supposed to be receiving a copy of The Someday Funnies pretty soon and then maybe I can make an photo of it and upload it. In fact almost all of the new National Lampoon stub article I made recently do need an image to go along with them, but we only own a very few of the books and recordings, and I have been so busy creating the stubs themselves that I have hardly had time to think of making images as well. (I find making images and uploading them a little bit of a nuisance, so it is often not a high priority for me.)

Also, normally I am working on WikiProject Gastropods. This National Lampoon stub project is sort-of a temporary sideline for me, necessitated by seeing that a short National Lampoon template had appeared, but seemed to have been created by a COI editor who was subsequently blocked.

Anyway, that's my story! Best to you, Invertzoo (talk) 22:35, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
