Hi Amire80, I am not sure I am leaving this request/explanation in the proper location so I would greatly appreciate any assistance and guidance you might be able to provide. I am responding to a deletion under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

The page that was created and deleted was for Shawn Christopher Joyce. Mr. Joyce is an up and coming author and publisher that is making his presence known among other great writers in the international hunting and writing industry. Mr. Joyce's first book was openly received by many in the industry and critically acclaimed by other well known authors such as Massad Ayoob, Craig Boddington, and others. The significance of the page creation is Mr. Joyce's rapid emergence and acceptance in the writing and publishing scene.

Many authors and readers are intersted in learning more about Mr. Joyce and the creation of a page regarding him seemed like the natural way to link those looking for more information about him and his background. Mr. Joyce's future writings and contributions will be significant and well received by the hunting and writing industry and having his information available through Wiki was a logical placement in addition to other open source references.

I understand that this may be a BLP issue, but the quotations are from a press release by Wikimedia Israel and you can trust it. FWIW, I was at the meeting and heard him saying these things.

You can see some of the quotes in the Jerusalem Post article, albeit in a different translation. For example, JPost says "That’s completely backwards", and the press release says "This is an absurd" (it should probably be "This is absurd" without the "an").

Time takes its crazy toll. You need quite a lot of imagination to relate the long-haired guy from the 70's photos to his current look, but it's him.

This site has images from the same tour. It lists the same line-up, and there's only one guitarist except Allen. I also believe that the booklet for 2032 has photos and names, although i don't have it here.

Kipchak/Kypchak

Hi Amir,

I'm cleaning up the mess I made on your talk page. Feel free to delete this section.

Encyclopaedia Britannica is consistent in preferring "Kipchak", so I've decided to change Kypchak to Kipchak where I can. Since the procedure for Moving a page is too onerous for me, I shall leave the "Kypchak languages" page alone rather than making it redirect to "Kipchak languages".

I'm still interested in your opinion on this minor issue: the reference to "Turki" on Bashkir language, said to be "part of the Kypchak group". Turki suggests that the term is generic and non-technical, but Bashkir language appears to use it as a specific term: "...Turki, a literary Turkic language".

Wow! Corrected in class?! By a teacher or by another student?

Dictionaries say אוּנִיבֶרְסִיטָה, which makes perfect sense. It's a U in Latin, so it's a Shuruk in Hebrew (BTW, i wrote most of the article about Kubutz and Shuruk :).

It is true, however, that some Israelis, maybe even many Israelis, pronounce an [o] there. I neven actually heard it, because my brain probably applies an automatic fix to that acoustic atrocity; I heard about it, because my Modern Hebrew lecturer Yael Reshef mentioned it in class.

One of the reasons for this confusion is obviously that the letter ו without niqqud signifies both [u] and [o]. Why it happens davka in this relatively easy word is beyond my comprehension. Most Israelis do know that in English it's written with a U, but probably don't properly map the letter "u" to the sound of shuruk. It's a very interesting phenomenon that should be studied by dedicated descriptivists. In fact, there's a group in the Tel-Aviv Oniversity that may be doing something like this (see Shlomo Izre'el's CoSIH project). --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, the teacher corrected us. She does a good job of teaching us about formal and colloquial usage. Like today, she mentioned that the first vowel in אתכם & אתכן is normally pronounced as [e] but it's more common to pronounce it with an [o] since that's how the rest of the direct object pronouns are pronounced. She added that in the past, she'd correct students but now she doesn't.

So, I brought up the onversita/universita issue with her this morning. I showed her that in the textbook that the niqqud indicates that it should be pronounced with a [u]; she was really surprised and said that people use the [o] pronunciation much more frequently. I did some Googling and found a McGill Hebrew student was wondering about the same thing.

I wouldn't "correct" such a thing. And pronouncing אתכם is also completely reasonable and not too high-brow. Teachers should teach the standard or a well-described deviation from the standard, that is proven to be so common that speaking the standard way would make people laugh at you. This is not the case in either of the examples you gave; it's like teaching that "nucular" and "ain't" are correct and "nuclear" and "isn't" are incorrect. (BTW, אוֹתְכֶם appears in the Bible, and by convention everything that appears in the Bible is not a grammatical mistake, but the preferred form today is nevertheless אֶתְכֶם.)

An example of a very common deviation from the standard is the second person plural in the past tense. The standard is to pronounce it with shva in the first syllable and with the ultimate syllable stressed ([kətavˈtem] - you wrote), but in daily speech everybody pronounces [kaˈtavtem] - with [a] in first syllable and with the penultimate syllable stressed. Another example would be the vowel of the article: in the standard language it's usually ha- and sometimes it's supposed to change to he-, but only a few people actually know the rules of this change, so people just say ha- all the time. The Academy is well aware of both things and they are well-documented; they are not yet standardized, but probably will be within a few years (or decades :).

An update from adopt a user

Hi there Amire80! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Since the Wikimania in Gdańsk i fell in love with Poland and its language. I bought a bunch of dictionaries and grammar books of Polish there - the selection is great and the prices are even better. Now, in addition to a Catalan shelf, an Arabic shelf, a Hebrew shelf, a Russian shelf, an English shelf and little Lithuanian, Spanish, French and Italian shelves, i have a lovely Polish shelf. Every time i see something written in Polish it makes me happy. I cannot write yet, though.

An impressive collection! :) When I was in Bautzen last September, I bought a whole collection of Sorbian dictionaries and grammar books myself. Candy for the slavist!

And as for this little language of ours, I have tried to rewrite the Dutch version into something that would meet the standards (sources etc.), and you know what? It is almost undoable! Given the number of press and other articles about it, I still think the language fulfills the notability criteria. But the weird thing is: the most (in fact: the only) authorative source writes that the whole thing is actually just one big mystification, and it openly questions the trustworthiness of some of the other sources. Now that's a curious paradox, isn't it? The language itself is obviously not a hoax, but any reports about its success are. In reality, it is used by some 3-5 people max. But in the meantime, we are stuck with articles about it in no less than 28 Wikipedia projects, half of them probably the result of some coordinated action, the other half of blind copying from other projects.
