Flora and Fauna of Karnataka

We should seperate out the Bird sanctuaries out for clarity into a seperate paragraph. Also, for each WLS/NP/BS we should include one line (few words) describing what kind of geography it has (moist deciduous, dry deciduous etc) unless its already there.Dineshkannambadi 20:14, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately I left one of my useful books (back home in India) which describes some of the newly inducted sanctuaries. Please add info if you can. Amar, Just a though. While the Tiger image in the Flora... page looks good, it looks like an image taken in a Zoo and really does not convey the true picture of a wild tiger in the wilderness. Thanks for the cpedits. The format I have been using in all FA's so far was prescribed by the FA review committee, so I will revert to the old format if you dont mind. The format you put in is what I used to use last year which the FA's reviewers did not want. I Dont want to change something that works well. Regarding the tiger image, dont worry. Its not a big deal. Whatever makes you happy. Also, be careful not to use the term POV lightly as there are many anti-Karnataka editors who could misquote you and misuse your statement quickly. Its only important in cpedits not to change to meaning of the intended citation , though once in away due to numerous copy edits, the meaning can change and this is what should be avoided. thanksDineshkannambadi 16:56, 12 May 2007 (UTC) Also, there is no need to use CE everywhere. Western Ganga images

Amar, do you have a good image from one of these Ganga temples (Hindu). The Talakad minor shrines built by them are not clear in my photographs.

Some examples are the Kapileswara temple at Manne, Kolaramma temple at Kolar, Nageshwara temple at Begur, the Hanumantesvara temple at Bannur, the Rameswara temple at Narasamangala, Bhoganandi shrine at Nandi Hills which is a beautiful shrine with lovely sculptures. At Talakad they built the Maralesvara temple, the Arakesvara temple and the Patalesvara temple. Other well known Hindu temples are the Mahalingesvara temple at Varuna, the Kallesvara temple at Aralaguppe, the Yoga Narasimha temple at Dadiga and the Dadigesvara temple at Kodihalli.Dineshkannambadi 16:34, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

The article needs a thorough copy edit. Upper case/lower case has been used and needs to be uniform, especiall the word Haridasa. Kannada transileration of Haridasa is needed. Changes to the portal

Hi Amar, I saw the changes you've made to the portal - the one today(FAs) and the one a few days ago(the Categories). I somehow feel that the changes are not appropriate in that a) they do not fit well with the overall 'theme'/'template' of the portal and b) I feel they are against the Portal MOS(manual of style)

Usually all wikiprojects keep track of their FAs on their Wikiproject page. The portal is meant to be like a website or something but only with free content drawn from across wikipedia. So the target like all articles is the lay reader. That being the case, I feel statistics about "Featured articles" and such is out of place there. Karnataka

Yes. You just have been awesome on the Karnataka article. I think we have a pretty well cited article now and all that we need to do is greatly prune it to a more reasonable size. It was 70 kb or so and I had trimmed it to 58 kb. Now it is back to 77kb which I think is also because of the several citations you have added in the past few days. I will start trimming again and once we get it down to around 60kb or something, I think we can nominate it for PR and then FA. Usually articles are expected to be in the 45-50kb range. But there are no hard and fast rules about that. I have seen FAs which are over 80-90kb also. Be that as it may, I think we will need to trim it to around 55-60kb or so if possible.

btw, I have expanded B. V. Karanth and plan to do a little more expansion within the next two days and nominate it for a dyk. Please take a look at it and see if you can add something. Sarvagnya 17:09, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Lets bring it to the Karnataka group and discuss. This type of FA is also new to me as it belongs to a new category of articles. I feel there are some sections that need citations.

• The last para of History, Literature, Language and Religion needs one or two citations each. I will get down to that this weekend. Dineshkannambadi 15:50, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

• Origin of Karnataka name should be merged with History. No point having a small para hanging out there. The lead may need to be slightly bigger by one para.
• A very brief mention of a few highlights may be needed, just as the Jnanapit awards have been mentioned. Something like "karnataka's contribution to literature, architecture, sports (cricket, hockey), religion ... all in one short para.
• Too many single line, double line, triple line paras. Need to keep to no less than 5 line paras by merging.
• Formatting is important, it seems we may have too many title headings making the "heading box" too long.
• We should compare against another "Indian state" FA (if any) and see how it looks. we may get some ideas there.
• Every web link needs to be shown as a reference in the "Reference column", All reference book/link needs to be alphabetized.
• I was comparing with Kerala state FA. We have too many subheadings. Need to consolidate culture, religion and arts into one section. Even witin Economy for instance, we have to many subheadings. The Economy is too skimpy with no real details for a state that stands 6th in GNP, 1st in IT etc. we needs facts and figures. There are too many subheadings, lots of overlinking in areas, and underlinking in others, all of which needs to be taken care off. The Peer reviewers are going to flag this anyway. Why dont we work on this for 2 more weeks and then go for it. Lets first satisfy the list of TBD's in the talk page. Good job. The economy looks better, but people need to see Rs and $ figues. Just percentage won't convey the picture. We need Per capita income, GDP, GNP in dollar figues. The impact is very different when numers are provided. I read somewhere that the Per capita =~$750. Need to confirm this and compare it to national average. We need to show that in all aspects, KA is above average, which it is. We need total Rs/$ for IT, BT, floriculture. Need to mentino a few key persons. Vijayanagar

It was a Telugu empire established by Telugu brothers Hakka and Bukka, who were Golla Nayaks employed in the court of Kakatiya King Prataparudra. They were captured when Warangal fell to muslims, taken to Delhi and converted to Islam. They were sent to subdue Hoysala king by Delhi sultanate. They did it but got reconverted to Hinduism under the influence of Vidyaranya and established Vijayanagar kingdom. See Robert Sewell's "Vijayanagar: A Forgotten Chapter of Indian History". A large number of local books and webpages will give false and biased information going against Sewell's well researched history.Kumarrao 05:34, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

2.I made an input in the article with proper citation. Is it wrong?

3. Scores of Kannada related articles in Wiki refer to blogs, webpages, ameturish historians etc., (E.g. Jyotsna Kamath's Potpourri; www.ourkarnataka.com; www.prabhu50g.com; www.kamat.com etc.,). Kannada history articles copiously quote two authors viz., Kamat and Arthikaje. The former got his book published by a local publisher. The latter writes history in a website on Karnataka. By which standard they become authoritative historians?

4.On the other hand, the website I refer belong to a well-known lingusitand scgolar of Dravidian language scripts.

I've put about 45,000 edits into wikipedia. I have during the course also added Indian articles both of which were DYK'S Joymati and Indramalati and Uttara (film). See also Abbas Kiarostami my first featured article. I have also worked extensively on Tibet setting up the wikiproject and creating article slike History of European exploration in Tibet. I am also trying to add all the Hungarian painters/sculptors to wikipedia and also create a wildlife series by country like Wildlife of Pakistan. These lists are being drawn up by me:

Howdy! I removed the speedy tag you applied to Image:Devaneya Pavanar Stamp.jpg as it wasn't a legit speedy rationale. I've instead left a message for the uploader asking them to attach a fair-use rationale, if they fail to do so, the image will then be removed under that element of copyright policy. Any reproduction of an Indian stamp image is clearly copyvio as has been mentioned in the webpage of the Indian Postal Department. I am not sure what kind of fair use rationale would allow the copyvio to be rectified... -- Amarrg 13:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

While organizations can claim copyright on media, Fair use exists as a method for using that when needed to make the encyclopedia. For example, if there was an article about the Coca-Cola logo, the fact that it's copyrighted doesn't mean that we're unable to show the logo in the context of an article about it. Please review WP:FU to see the privileges and restrictions surrounding fair-use and its role on Wikipedia.
