Deletion Review of Last-minute rescue

[edit]

As you participated in the AfD for this article, I am informing you of a deletion review currently in progress for the article. The creator of the article wants to discuss what constitutes original research. The article as it currently appears is userfied to User:George Serdechny/Last-minute rescue. Thank you. CycloneGU (talk) 19:55, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I see you moved the hook to prep; however, I was still waiting for the page creator to link it to other articles, as it is a complete orphan with no other pages linked to it. Yoninah (talk) 12:23, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Prep 3

[edit]

Hi, I see you moved List of La Sierra University presidents to prep. I just reviewed this a few hours ago, noting that it was just a list. The page editor added background information which really belongs in the main article, La Sierra University. Also, the references aren't formatted. I for one would not approve this hook. Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:40, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your complaint is obviously based upon outdated information. User:Dr pda/prosesize.js shows the article currently contains 2097 characters (345 words) of readable prose size. --Allen3 talk 11:41, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's not what I'm talking about. This page, as its title states, is a "list" to accompany the main article. You can't just slap "background" or "history" on it to make it suitable for DYK. All that background belongs in the main article. Yoninah (talk) 14:55, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I see I'm not the only one thinking along these lines. A merge discussion has been going on at La Sierra University since April. I added merge tags to both these pages. Yoninah (talk) 15:14, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't change hooks just because you are unfamiliar with the rules of English grammar. As someone has rightly pointed out, "its" is just as correct as "it". Many thanks, Ericoides (talk) 07:52, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Q2 - Heathrow

Could you remove my hook for Heathrow from Queue 2 so that I can return it to the suggestions page? It was one of three suggestions but I feel it is the least interesting of those. Harrison49 (talk) 18:32, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your reversion of a bot error

[edit]

I wish you would have let me know about this error when you reverted it. It would have saved me from having to make the same fix to several hundred other talk pages where the bot made the same error since April 4, once someone else finally let me know about the problem. Anomie 23:02, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Allen3, I notice you moved this article from DYK to the P2 area, but it was decided the image shouldn't go with it. The removal of the image is detrimental to the impact of the slightly quirky hook, so I'd like you to either move it back to the DYK waiting area until it can have the lead image or adjust the P2 area so the image goes with it. It's one of those hooks that really does need a picture. Hope this makes sense? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:12, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently it's now in Q6 (as User:Harrison49 has been kind enough to let me know), please move it back to holding or delay it until such a time the image will be able to go with it. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 21:30, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

In researching the Tokyo In Tulsa Wikipedia entry I noticed that you had deleted it in 2009 as a "non-notable convention". Considering that TNT just wrapped up its fourth year and is planning to expand to four days in 2012, I think it has become a convention of note. Therefore, I am working on a new Tokyo In Tulsa entry. Prep question

[edit]

I just moved a DYK hook to a prep area for the first time. in the instructions it says "N13: After adding an entry to a preparation area page, remove it from the suggestions page. Make sure to include the article name, date, nominator, and creator under the "Credits" section to allow others to return it if a dispute arises." at Wikipedia:Did_you_know/Preparation_areas. but in T:TDYK#How_to_promote_an_accepted_hook it does not mention removing the article sub page from T:TDYK and I noticed that after I closed the subpage, although in edit mode it still appears in T:TDYK once you refresh T:TDYK the subpage no longer appears in view mode. Why is this? And can the contradictory instructions be updated? PumpkinSky talk 13:35, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Allen3,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 06:24, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

the doon school dyk

[edit]

Hi allen,

Do forgive me but I didn't understand your recent comment on the Doon school DYK submission. I started expanding the article only in December 2011 and you say there is no sufficient expansion? Also, is it necessary that the article has to be five-fold expanded before the inclusion in DYK? Can't the quality of the article compensate for it? Thanks! :: Merlaysamuel :: (talk) 12:08, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I rejected the DYK submission. DYK is for articles that are substantially new, meaning the entire article is content new to Wikipedia or the article was expanded 5x very recently. (See Wikipedia:Did you know for details.) Since this article is very large, a 5x expansion is essentially impossible. --Orlady (talk) 14:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I agree that the article is not new. It's 5+ years old, but the fact or the'hook' of DYK was recent (2012). I really don't understand what does DYK submission has got to do anything with Article size or expansion. After all, isn't DYK all about interesting trivia and facts? And that's what i had in mind when i submitted it. Please do correct me me if I'm wrong. Many thanks :)

:: Merlaysamuel :: (talk) 15:27, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The main purpose of DYK is to call attention to new article content in Wikipedia. It does so by highlighting interesting facts from new articles and articles that have recently been significantly expanded. (Most of the 5x expansions featured in DYK took the article from a short stub to a fairly substantial article.) --Orlady (talk) 17:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying. So do you mean that the Doon School can now never qualify for DYK, regardless of how many interesting facts it has?

:: Merlaysamuel :: (talk) 19:19, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The issue of "how many interesting facts" the article of a proposed hook may contain is not a factor in DYK eligibility. To qualify for DYK the article would need to be expanded from its current 28093 characters of readable prose to roughly 140000 characters of readable prose. While it is theoretically possible that such an expansion could be performed, from a practical standpoint there is little likelihood that enough additional sourced material could be located to allow for such an expansion without resorting to original research or creating some other problem. --Allen3 talk 20:39, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks. I now understand what DYK really is. I used to think that it carries interesting facts and trivia for any article. But little did i know that the articles have to be recently expanded. thanks for the clarification! :: Merlaysamuel :: (talk) 21:10, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was not aware that posting that message on administrators talk page would be considered canvassing.

I am not intending to get any one sided opinion on this, if that was so, why would I choose Administartors, every user I chose to post on was an administrator and I felt they are the ones who will be unbiased. I saw advertising on the RFC page and thought that was the way to go. Please revert your views on the talk page which says I am trying to canvass if you may think fair.

Peter Feldmann promoted?

[edit]

Sorry, but how does this review = promoted? I was the first reviewer, and brought in some objections; the second reviewer reviewed a hook that was explicitly withdrawn by the nominator. As we stand, the entire hook hinges on a fact that the nominator has said, on the very nom page, is no longer verifiable.

The article needs some rewriting (per the nominator) and the hook needs to be formally verified subsequent to that. I really don't see why this was promoted when the discussion was still ongoing. Dahn (talk) 21:27, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Allen, I'm looking at the nomination page as we speak. What I see is the following: you picked up a hook that was neither approved nor rejected, and for which there is no approved or rejected symbol; you suggest that it is impossible to read through the arguments without such visual clues, yet you were able to pick up on my comment about what idiomatic use goes with "Jewish belief". I'm not here to criticize you for the sake of conversation, I'm here to tell you to move the hook back from the queue, precisely because you ignored the rules you invoke - the hook was passed without being approved. That is an evident fact, regardless of how inept you suggest I am when it comes to communicating it. I apologize for the inconvenience, but building up rhetoric around that mistake doesn't make it a lesser mistake,. Regards, Dahn (talk) 14:33, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was under the impression that, as a constructive long-term contributor to DYK, I would deserve more than this wall of silence treatment. If it weren't an actual requirement that I would be spending time on the QPQ nomination, I would also try and ignore blunders such as this one, it's not like anybody but me cares; but I'm told I have to, then I'm told it's an irrelevant task, and that I'm wrong to even bring up the issues I see. If it weren't for WP:POINT and the fact that I'm a decent person, this reaction of yours would simply teach me to pretend I actually review hooks, and just pass every one I need to pass in the QPQ process. Dahn (talk) 11:43, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OTD April 15

[edit]

I don't want it to seem like I'm completely overruling you on Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/April 15. I personally prefer to rotate as many article as possible every year, so I took out all of the ones that were repeated from last year. The other ones I replaced were the Arab revolt (ineligible) and the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, because Hu Yaobang (same year) became eligible again, so I like to reward the editors for doing the cleanup with a Main Page appearance. In other words, feel free to continue updating OTD as you see fit. I try to leave in any articles that other people swap unless circumstances dictate otherwise. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 11:36, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you deleted this article. But it is recreated. I m not sure that is it the same person who re-created it with new username or not. But just informed you. Thanks! Yasht101 11:50, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Special date requests at DYK

[edit]

I may have a DYK request to add to the section you removed here. Do you think it is too late now to put requests up for those dates? If so, would it be possible to put a note somewhere on what sort of lead-up time is needed for special date requests? I've seen some requests get put in right at the last minute, and some requested weeks in advance. It seems to depend largely on who responds to the request. Is it unlikely, for example, that if the queues were filled, that changes would be made after that point? Or is the bottleneck the reviewing time? Carcharoth (talk) 02:12, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I'd missed that instruction you pointed out. That, and the more detailed explanation you provided, were very helpful. I'll go ahead and nominate the article(s) anyway, when ready (hopefully later today), but may suggest a different date (whether that is accepted or not, I don't know, but I agree it is far too late now for this weekend).
