Administrators' newsletter – April 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • There is an ongoing request for comment to streamline the source deprecation and blacklisting process.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold a Arbcom RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. A draft RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC (Draft) and not open to comments from the community yet. Interested editors can comment on the RfC itself on its talk page.

Miscellaneous

  • The WMF has begun a pilot report of the pages most visited through various social media platforms to help with anti-vandalism and anti-disinformation efforts. The report is updated daily and will be available through the end of May.

ANI note

Hi Alex, just a note to say I briefly mentioned you at ANI in Editor parading as pending changes reviewer without rights as one of the recipients of Vivek ji123's constant badgering. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 09:51, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Josietoney's unblock request

Hi Alexf,

I'd like to unblock Josietoney (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) for now, and if I understand correctly, we share the same views about this. Can I proceed?

Thank you very much in advance and best regards,

It was explained in your talk page. The site matches your username. It seriously looks like spam. Are you saying it is a coincidence with your user name?-- Alexf(talk) 18:22, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

Banned without warning

You are a fucking cunt ban my cold cast page for no reason fuck you and your garbage website Markygshadow505 (talk) 06:58, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Why not just delete @ColdCastBand and this account from this website Markygshadow505 (talk) 07:08, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Nice mouth you have. Have you read our rules? This "website"you do not seem to like is an encyclopedia, not a place for advertisement. for your band. Just because it is free to edit, it does not mean you are allowed to use it as your own social media. If you want to promote your band, there are many places like FB or similar. You could even create your own website. If you want to read Wikipedia to learn about things, feel free to do it. If you want to edit, then you need to abide by the rules. Simple. As per your request to delete an account, that is not possible per the rules again. -- Alexf(talk) 09:45, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

You deleted my Page Sam Zuga

Hello Sir Alex, You deleted my Page "SAM ZUGA".

Wikipedia has a lot of multiple rules that are encyclopedic in nature. So I do my best to read as many as I can, and also watch some YouTube videos about Wikipedia.

While I'm writing this article, it is still extremely incomplete. Then again, I watched a video and read an article which stated that anything in your Sandbox is still like in your editing notepad, and won't be tampered it, because you've not submitted it for publishing.

It became annoying to me that while I've followed the rules and kept the draft unpublished and in my Sandbox, you still tampered with it and deleted it.

So, what should I do to get it back and start working on it again?

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charles Okorobo (talkcontribs) 09:31, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

The article and draft were blatantly promotional. I take in consideration that you say you are working on it, so I have restored it. You need to read about promotional editing, and if you have been asked to write the article you have to declare being paid. Please read then about conflicts of interest. Also make sure you understand the Golden Rule. If you have any questions about how Wikipedia works, please ask at the Tea House. Lastly, always remember to sign your posts in Talk with four tildes at the end. -- Alexf(talk) 09:42, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Alexf

Alexf are you mad why you deleted my edits Foqoza (talk) 22:40, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Not mad at you or anything like that. Just following policy. Insulting language is not permitted. and Wikipedia is not social media. Please read What may I not have in my user pages? -- Alexf(talk) 22:58, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for restoring my Page: Sam Zuga

Dear Sir Alexf, I am glad you restored my page: Sam Zuga.

Now, it's time I declare some things so that I can be helped:

1. This is my first ever article. And I'm not writing it because I know the person, or been influenced by the person. Truthfully, I don't know this person, have not been influenced by this person, until a friend contracted me to write for this person.

2. I write the article in my Sandbox. But when it's time to save it, the only option I'm given is "PUBLISH PAGE". I don't see any option that tells me to save "AS DRAFT". So I choose the "PUBLISH PAGE" option and believe that it's saving as a page inside my Sandbox. For you guys to keep deleting the page is therefore suggesting to my mind that perhaps the page is not being saved and published into my Sandbox--but is actually being published Globally?

I need you to help me be clear on this, and also show me how not to publish an unpublished work, but rather save it as a Draft in my Sandbox.

3. The person I'm writing about didn't go to University. He stopped at Secondary School(what the Americans call High School). This suggests that he has a limited understanding of PROFILE BUILDING and NOTABILITY RESUME. But in Benue State of Nigeria where he comes from, he believes that he has done some things to make history remember him. Thus he asked to be put on Wikipedia(irrespective of his limited understanding of Notability).

My question is this---What exactly is the subtle definition of Notability in the Wikipedia Mind? If this man that I'm writing about has actually done some things that have helped people in Benue State of Nigeria, should this not qualify as someone to be remembered by the lives he touched? Does notability means that he's contributions should have Global and National impact? And small Community impacts don't matter and don't count as contributions?

I really need you to help me understand all the issues I've raised, and will be glad by the education I'm waiting to receive from you.

Sincere Regards Charles Charles Okorobo (talk) 10:25, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Read about notability and specifically notability for people. For new articles go to Articles for Creation. This is not the place to ask and learn. You can read the help pages or you can ask specific questions at the Tea House. -- Alexf(talk) 10:31, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Re: National varieties of English

Hi! Argentina's most used spelling is the British one (it's not an English-speaking country, so it's taught the original form and not the American one). That's why I changed it. Besides, there were a lot of mixed spellings so I wanted to add consistency. Kegelschnitt (talk) 19:47, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

FYI

Hi. This is just a note that I've expressed some disagreement with a block you made a couple of weeks ago, here. The block was completely understandable, even though I disagree with it given all the circumstances that were involved. I didn't mention you by username in that discussion as I didn't mean to drag you into any sort of dispute. Nonetheless, since I did mention your action, I thought I should give you a heads-up in case you want to take a look. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 00:15, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

@Newyorkbrad: I see. Didn't know about this exchange. The block was - as you know - because the username is of the company and is editing a company's article. I saw a username violation. That was it. -- Alexf(talk) 00:44, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi there. As I recently did some minor edits to a lot of tube line articles (I normally more of a WP:HED editor, feel free to join the current boosterism discussion at WT:HED if you're interested), I noticed Carto.metro (talk · contribs) spring up changing the links from carto.metro.free.fr to cartometro.com, and your subsequent block of said user. Whilst I can agree that it could appear to be spam, correcting link names already present on the page to updated ones isn't, and the sites maps are some of the go-to maps for tube systems around: you'll notice this user hasn't really added these links, they're there thanks to other users (such as long-standing editor Chris j wood (talk · contribs) see example edit) who have thought it important to add them over the years. I do agree with you on the name, although it's arguably just a pseudonym they publish everything under, not some corporation or commercial interest, however it does serve as promotion. Yes, the correct thing for them to do would have been to post something on a talk page, such as WP:TRAIN, however, people who do not participate in the project could be helped by being informed of such, especially if the changes made are constructive and helpful, and are not disruptive. Just some things I thought you might want to keep in mind if there's an appeal to the block. This itself is not intended to be an appeal to the block or a request in any form; it's here only to make sure you're aware in case there's any conflict. Have a nice day! Shadowssettle(talk) 15:43, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

@Shadowssettle: Notice I did not block him for spamming per se (I understood she was fixing old links), and I did not revert said links as spam. The reason for the block was the username, which indicates a company as it matches the linked URLs. In any case an account with such name should not be adding/changing external links to such name, and should avoid the blatant COI. That the user may not know the rules, or chose to disregard them does not change the fact of the username violation which should not have been made in the first place. -- Alexf(talk) 16:26, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, the talk page message indicated spam or promotion was involved in the ban. As I said, the point about the username is both valid and sufficient, and I'm not getting involved in account bans in the first place; I'm not involved in any administrative, monitoring, or otherwise advanced role here. I just thought I'd bring this point up as an FYI in case spam becomes a point of contention if the user asks to be unblocked. Have a nice day! Shadowssettle(talk) 17:03, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
That's ok. Note that the same script and message (spamublock) is used for spammy account names (and he was changing to an link that matches the account). Also note that he was not banned but blocked There is a difference. -- Alexf(talk) 17:15, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

User F&INerd

Last week you gave a warning to F&INerd about disruptive editing. The user ignored that warning and placed the same information back into the article. I believe this user is the subject of the article or has an undisclosed conflict of interest with the article. I also believe that the user was using a different account to edit before DrWillow and has made a new account to avoid being banned. I have requested a sockpuppet investigation in regards to these two accounts. Hyderabad22 (talk) 04:16, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

I too request a sockpuppet investigation on the offender Hyderabad22 (talk) who is clearly biased, and works to uphold libel against the subject, breaking Wiki policy. While he works also at blocking other editors that do not meet 'his' opinions on the subject. Rather, he instead attacks and blocks other editors to the page, abusing wiki policy. F&INerd (talk) 04:25, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

I am not a Checkuser which is needed for SPI. The place to request it is at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations. Please read the instructions carefully before proceeding there. -- Alexf(talk) 09:16, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

I have had a bit of time to have a further look at it and it was updated incorrectly in change [3] on 4 February this year in the midst of a lot of other reverted edits, by a one time IP editor. I wonder how valid the other changed information is. In particular should the 15px be changed back to 50px? In the lead of the article the population has also been changed and reverted since February, but was now also wrong which I have also fixed.Fleet Lists (talk) 02:29, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

hello a page i created was detected by you for what reason i don't know. The page is about a Zambian Pop artist Mukondo Chileshe that goes by the name Muki. So i his manager tried to make a Wikipedia page for him and boom it gets deleted. his song are all available worldwide on all music streaming platforms. Its so easy for white people to get except on Wikipedia but for black people you have to be million dollar big for that to happen. anyway it's your service and you have the right to choose who is worthy to be on your encyclopedia. I created this user account - about 10 minutes ago - because I was under the impression if I was going to do automated or tool-assisted edits programmatically, that I must first create a separate "Bot" account, then ask for it to be marked as a bot. My next step was to do exactly that. I note you did not read the user page, or you would have seen I indicated who my owner was (User:Rfc1394, who has been recognized as a "veteran editor" with over ten years of posting history and over 6,000 edits). What I have done was what I thought was required by policy, if I am mistaken, please advise; if I am not in error, can you grant this account "Bot" status/privilege to show the reasoning behind it? If not, let me know where to request permission. Thank you for your assistance.

@Imran khan00: There are a few (actually several issues) to talk about. I am glad you corrected thje page after vandalism That is why it had to be protected. Now for the issues, starting twith the minor formatting ones. You always should start a new section (you didn't so your comments went to the wrong section). You should always link to the article you are referring to (I did it in the new section header). You should always sign your comments in talk pages by adding four tildes at the end. Now for the serious issues. Mainly, as you were told before you have a conflict on interest on that page, and you have failed to declare you are paid to edit articles. See Wikipedia's mandatory and non-negotiable policy on paid editing. -- Alexf(talk) 19:16, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
