Indian COTW

  • great to know that amul has been nominated. don't have much knowledge about this topic. have been reminded today that i have only 12 edits to my name. planning to improve my score. hope to hit a century (does that matter??). well i have 14 now. will try to edit with my name now. would that add to the value of my vote - "This user has 123 edits. so dare not accuse him"
Aksi great, Everything in wikipedia works on consensus. It is just a dicussion point to prevent sockpuppets from voting. You can put your point across in the discussion here. Please take this discussion in your stride and continue to contribute. Please let me know if you need help with anything. Thanks for your contributions. - Ganeshk (talk) 17:33, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Avoid_Copyright_Paranoia please visit this page and i am referring to the Sabarmati Riverfront Project. You have not visited the discussion page of Ahmedabad city, for a long time, or so it seems. If you are satisfied, please post the section again, or notify me, so that I start some re-writing on my own. Anirudh

You are absolutely right... I think we should rewrite that article. The Sabarmati Riverfront Project deserves to be placed as a heading, because it will soon be changing the face and outlook of Ahmedabad.

Anirudh

Thanks for uploading Image:Schoololdpic.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 08:04, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Politician images

Hi Aksi. I noticed your good work with articles on Indian politicians. I lifted the photo of TR Baalu from the official site of Lok Sabha. I marked it with a public domain tag by inserting {{PD-IndiaGov}} into the description. However, it was realised recently that these images are copyrighted and we can't use them. :-( They'll be deleted. If you have an image that you own or if the owner has released under a Wikipedia-compatible licence, you can upload it by adding one of the tags in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Also read Wikipedia:Copyrights. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:06, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Politician pages

About T R Baalu, there was a placeholder for Children in the infobox. I thought why not. The parliament website mentions it. It is a bio, more the info. the better.

The infoboxes can still be added to all articles. For those that we do not have copyright-free images (it is going to tough to find them, unless we hand-draw them :)), add Image:blank.jpg in the Image field. See Marina Geli i Fàbrega for example. - Ganeshk (talk)

need for redirects

Hi.. saw the changes made to T R Baalu. Have not implemented the infobox on other articles yet because there is a copyright problem with the images taken from the GOI site. Also, I feel that things like spouse and children don't make much sense and don't add value to the article.

Can you also redirect the article H R Bharadwaj to Hansraj Bhardwaj as the latter is the correct name of the person. Similarly, A R Antule needs to be redirected to Abdul Rehman Antulay.

- Aksi great 09:45, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Done. - Ganeshk (talk) 17:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

I started this project to create and expand articles related to the Indian politics. I hope you would join and contribute. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 07:03, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

just dropped in...

...to say hi after seeing your message on the talkpage of WP:POI. btw, I saw the message about H R Bharadwaj and A R Antule above. Typically, we retain articles at the common names. You may want to see WP:MoS and related pages for further info or the talkpage of WP:INCINE where we had a discussion on Indian names. Keep up the good work. --Gurubrahma 13:35, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Has been nominated for deletion as it is the same material essentially found elsewhere...best think to do is go and vote to delete it. It's just POV junk for sure.--MONGO 14:37, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for keeping on top of it. Tom Harrison Talk 13:37, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I fixed the infobox with this change. Leave the footnote blank and use date and URL fields. I felt a need for the bio link and had added them to the infobox itself. - Ganeshk (talk) 10:51, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

You had not put up any picture in its stead. The blank image is irrelevant to the article. Or is it not? --Andy123 15:31, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
What you have explained here is not quite justifiable. I would like you to rethink upon it. Is there any policy on Wikipedia about it? You could have definately mentioned about the requirement of a picture on the talk page. Technically, placing a blank picture does not have a stand here. Read WP:IUP for details (nothing of the sort you are talking about exists on the page). Moreover, a blank picture taking up space on an encyclopedia article looks extremely unprofessional. --Andy123 16:23, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

The Lok Sabha website does not come under the GFDL policies of Wikipedia. For uploading pictures on a Wikipedia page, the images should be registered specifically under GFDL. If you search for promotional websites of the MPs (remember that only promotional pictures can be used, which are available with the press, but not necessarily press release photographs), you can use them under the fair use option that Wikipedia provides. The images have to be of low resolution, and used only for depiction, this would qualify for fair usage on Wikipedia. For example, the pictures used on Green Day are licensed under fair use. (The Right to Information Act, does not have any relevancy here. The copyrights applying here are of the United States copyright law). The problem faced by Wikipedia is that it is not only a free encyclopedia, but it gives all of its contents for free, even for commercial and non-academic or research purposes. Copyright infringments have the potential to cause serious damage to this encyclopedia. --Andy123 16:51, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Keep in mind that you are creating only stubs and not full length articles on Wikipedia. Such tags should be placed when the article has grown to some extent. Because the templates would only add up to the space on the page, when there is not much given about the person in the article. There are lots and lots of stubs on Wikipedia like these, and they would be quite difficult to manage if you place such templates on the whole lot of them. Furthermore, I would always suggest that you use the templates rather than images uploaded by users for such purpose. --Andy123 16:57, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I am wishing you a happy Holi, the unique Hindu celebration of color and brotherhood among all members of the humanity. The festival falls on 15th March 2006. I have collected A Gift Pack of Quotations for you contained in the sections Do things Differently & Something More , which are part of the on-going discussion pertaining to my nomination of Idleguy for adminship. You are aware of the tradition that if you throw colored water on flames of burning Holika, you enable a Prahlad to emerge from the flames!!! I again convey Holi greetings to you and your family!!! --Bhadani 15:04, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey nice to see you here too!

But I'm a bit confused. Are you Aksi my senior (the one in Parasvil's batch) or my batchmate Aksi. Either way great seeing you here. Good to have someone on Wikipedia who you know personally. Yeah i'll be very interested in improving the Loyola Article. What say we meet @ Loyola sometime & click a few photos to upload on Wikipedia. Will be a good addition to the article. I've got a digi cam. So you got time?

Thanks

Re:Ahmedabad

Yes, ofcourse. Next time, we will try and nominate it for Wikiproject India's collaboration of the week. We'll also be needing some GFDL licensed pictures for the article, preferably taken by us. Places like Judges' Bungalow and Vastrapur need to be covered to show the haute coutoure in Ahmedabad *wink. Alright? --Andy123(talk) 16:18, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you are right. I suppose that we work to make this article look nice. But still, we will have to mention the educational institutions somwhere. Would it be on a subpage or a new page would be made for this? Still I believe that notable institutions should be mentioned on the page. Nichalp removed lots of stuff that he thought was clutter. We should act on his advice and use Bangalore and Mumbai as references. --Andy123(talk) 17:58, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Groups

Hi Aksi

I just saw your edit count. It's off the charts man! Close to 1000 edits & I thought you were new here or something! Being such an experienced user I'm surprised that you are part of no groups or Projects (to the best of my knowledge). With your innumerable contributions to the Ahmedabad article you should atleast be a member of Indian cities project. Also you can join Esperanza & the Cricket Project. I have also given some info about Esperanza to Andy123 here [1] & about the cricket project to Suyash at his talk page. You can look it up. I think Indian Wikipedians will be pleased to have such an experienced Wikipedian around here.

(P.S What say we meet at Loyola on the 29th? I have an exam on 28th after which we can go around clicking photos of Loyola & Ahmedabad)

See you soon

Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Aksi great/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks! — nathanrdotcom (TCW) 22:56, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I would like to welcome you too. I'm glad you took my suggestion. If you want to change your signature like mine or any other Esperanzians (With a green 'e' or any other letter). You can ask nathanrdotcom. He has been very helpful to me throughout my time at Wikipedia.
Good to have you at Esperanza

Hi Aksi,

A request has been made for Indian Institutes of Technology to be peer-reviewed so that it can achieve a Featured Article status. I have been working on it for the last one week and feel that it is satisfactorily good to start the peer-review process. Please care to have a look at it and give your precious comments. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 17:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Unsourced edits on Ahmedabad

Your edits on Ahmedabad article are unsourced, esp. in sections Origin of name, Civic Administration, Transport, Culture and Media. The information added is correct to my knowledge, but it should be sourced and cited properly (even if they have been re-written from books), according to the guidelines and policies on Wikipedia. (WP:V, WP:CITE and WP:NOR). I would further suggest, instead of putting up a picture of the structure of the civic administration of the city in the concerned section, you could add a picture of the building of one of the administering body in Ahmedabad. The civic setup/hierarchy can be explained in words in the particular section. You have done extremely well on the article, and I appreciate your efforts. --Andy123(talk) 20:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. --Andy123(talk) 20:31, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Copied from my talk page: I believe People and culture would be the suitable header for that. In one scenario, we might depict with a picture, the old city and then in a different paragraph we show the diversity in another part of the city. --Andy123(talk) 19:39, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Hi there,

I just saw your message. So just dropped by to say hi. Yes, I tried to modify Ahmedabad by adding the "Metropolitan Cities" tag to it, as I truly feel that Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad qualify to being that. But, seems that the Government has classified only the big 4 + Bangalore as being A1 cities. But there's a question here, does being classified as A1 only make you a metropolitan city? Or is it possible to make the Top ten cities of India as "Metropolitan"?

That would then include Jaipur and Kanpur also I guess.

Anyways nice to talk to you.

Bye. Arya

Thank you
