I see where you are going there, but given the sentence structure, I would expect the link to go to the individual: "...and includes monuments to..." and then states names, only one of which is linked to a monument. I'd recommend rephrasing and linking them all to the monuments or leave as is. See Wikipedia:LINK#Piped_links under Intuitiveness for more details. — BQZip01 — talk 13:58, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Supe list

Please see talk:List of United States Military Academy alumni (Superintendents)#rename/move. Thanks. --rogerd (talk) 22:10, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

OK, fine. But I don't understand why it can't become an FL with the name I suggested. But I will leave it up to you and him. --rogerd (talk) 01:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

USMA alum

Glad to have you help on this. The large sections like MOH will be sublisted. We leave 5 as a sample and will then start the sublist. Which 5 is not a big deal but I like to choose famous or the more interesting ones for that. Your choice is fine of course. Glad to have the help. RlevseTalk 01:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Understand. Foley and Bucha are both well known, especially since they are the last two living USMA MOH awardees. MacArthur and Wainwright would be more famous that Titus, Nininger, or Robinson. I hadn't given it much thought about narrowing the list to 5. Let me think it over some more. Every USMA MOH awardee has a large plaque with their citation inscribed on it here at the academy. They are placed at various places around campus. It might take me a while to track down all 74 of them, but I could probably do it. Do you think it might be something worth including on the main list, next to each name or reference citation?  Ahodges7   talk 02:03, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
I started List of United States Military Academy alumni (Medal of Honor), use List of United States Naval Academy alumni (Medal of Honor) as a guide. The USMA set needs LOTS of work. The MOH one has several red links on people so they all need at least stubs. The list on wiki seems to have most of the USMA MOH people. What do you mean by " Do you think it might be something worth including on the main list, next to each name or reference citation?"? Include what? I chose Robinson because he was the first and he was a drop out. Titus and Nininger had neat stories. I can't stand MacArthur, though Wainwright is cool. What USMA class are you from? RlevseTalk 02:35, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
See item a in general refs: List_of_United_States_Military_Academy_alumni_(Medal_of_Honor)#References, seems to have a good full list with stats and more. RlevseTalk

Mac's Plaque
I'm class of 1998. The plaques I was referring to look like this one, which was MacArthur's. Do you think there would be any value added to photograph all of them and somehow include them with each reference?
I think it'd cause spacing problems to include them in every ref as there is not much to say about some of these guys. The older MOH citations tending to only have one or two sentences. Maybe putting it in a few of them where there is lots to say, like Mac, and/or can you add something to the lead about the fact that WP has these and then we can find a spot for the pic of Mac's plaque. RlevseTalk 15:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Agree on the spacing issue. The plaques quote the official MOH citation only besides the Officer's name and class year, so some of the Civil War and Indian War awardees are pretty short. The plaques are spread out all over post, with some in academic buildings, some in the mess hall, some in the barracks. It actually might be neat to try to track them all down and photo every one of them. Hmmm, sounds like a new hobby coming on...  Ahodges7   talk 01:17, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
You live or work at the Point? RlevseTalk 03:08, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
Both.  Ahodges7   talk 18:40, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Find a grad problem

I got a "friends" account at the online WPAOG so I could verify graduates (like the Gilchrist dude who was a dropout and became Gov of FL but many sources say he's a grad, but he's not) but it has a problem. It only goes back to WWII or so. Is it not complete of limited to living people? Do you have access to a printed or online complete db such as the Cullum file? RlevseTalk 15:16, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

It's living people only. I'd have to pay to get the whole thing and I'm not doing that. I told them Navy has them beat on this, anyone get look up their alums, name and year only, for free without an account. So, do you have access someone?RlevseTalk 16:22, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Give me a few days on this, I'll take a look at it and head over to AOG if needed. I supposed that can access any particular grad. Perhaps I can work something out.  Ahodges7   talk 01:29, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
"Just go to: http://www.library.usma.edu/archives/special.asp and expand the Biographical Register section. There you will find that each volume (the first covered over 50 years of graduates and the remainder cover 10 years each) has a name index at the end that can provide the “Cullum Number,” order of merit sequence of graduation to access the appropriate file. I think that beats Navy by miles. You won’t, however, find non-graduates, like Gilchrist in there, but it may help with research on others." From a guy at AOG. Send me an email and I can forward it to you. RlevseTalk 10:36, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

MOH Count

SOurces say there are 74 MOH alum, but I'm counting 81 (see our USMA MOH list). Even throwing out the nongrads (4 I think) there are still more than 74. RlevseTalk 18:57, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Honestly, I've never tried to count them. Not sure where the disconnect is since there haven't been any new awardees since Vietnam. I believe that Versace was awarded his many years later, and perhaps others were in the same manner after the 74 number was published or became well-known.  Ahodges7   talk 18:30, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
I went through and counted them and if you don't count the non-grads or those who earned the MOH before they were cadets, I get a total of 75. Versace received his posthumously in 2002, so perhaps the # of 74, which had stood since Bucha's award during Vietnam, has become the number oft quoted, but now incorrect?  Ahodges7   talk 22:50, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
That's it. I used to keep a MOH site and hunted MOH imposters. Versace was recent, so the # 74 is obsolete. We should clarify this in the lead. I'll take care of it. Feel free to copyedit. RlevseTalk 20:01, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
See if you agree 75 after they graduated, 1 before admitted (Titus), and 5 non grads (Robinson, Tompkins, Daly, Donlon, Gardner) = 81. I broke it out in the footnotes. RlevseTalk 20:08, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Agree. Looks good to me.  Ahodges7   talk 23:41, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Uh oh. Bourke, Civil War enlisted, Class of 1869, we need to nail the count down for FL. RlevseTalk 01:57, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm doing a tally here: User:Rlevse/Todo RlevseTalk 02:13, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm. see that link. I think the 74 number is correct after all, for MOHs earned after graduation. What do you think? RlevseTalk 02:18, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Looks good to me. I'm glad you listed them all out and categorized them. USMA is pretty big on graduating, so I suspect the 74 number would not include non-grads. Kinda of surprised the "enlisted" ones are not counted, since they did graduate, but it must be because the numbers work.  Ahodges7   talk 02:33, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Wilby

What is wrong with Wilby's pic? There's plenty of room for pics on that page. RlevseTalk 03:12, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Nothing wrong with Wilby, but he wasn't someone who stood out to me as being famous or having made major contributions to the Academy. Feel free to put it back in. As with most former Supes, he does have a street named after him here. Maybe my screen resolution is different than yours, but on my screen, I was running out of space and he didn't make my list. Again, your better at this stuff than I, so feel free to put him image back if you think it should be there.  Ahodges7   talk 18:27, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
Set your screen res to 1024x768. RlevseTalk 20:02, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Bio register

Awesome resource: [1]. Cullum would be good too if you have access. RlevseTalk 10:30, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Barron

I can't find a good ref on Barron that says he was Supe, only a good one that says he was math dept head. RlevseTalk 22:34, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

That's because he never really was the Supe. I did a little deeper digging. Here's the timeline according to Ambrose (1966) and Crackle (2002):
  • June 1803: Williams resigns over a dispute between himself and the artillery cdr at WP over who has command of the post
  • June 1803-April 1805: Superintendency falls to the next Engineer in seniority, MAJ Decius Wadsworth, who is often away supervising engineering projects on the eastern seaboard. Because of his absence, the next senior officer, CPT Barron, mathematics instructor, is in charge. A bachelor, he apparently allows mutliple prostitues to live with him under the cover of being "house servants".
  • Feb 1805: Wadsworth reposted to New Orleans, academy is Supe-less
  • April 1805: Williams returns as Supe, but is often away of the next few years, just as Wadsworth was, so Baron continues to run the place.
  • Jan 1807: Baron is finally brought up on charges of deriliction of duty and neglect of the academy and chooses to resign. Williams begins to spend more time at the post to shape it up.

So I guess we need to ammend the Supe list to have Decius Wadsworth as Supe from 1803-1805 and remove barron. The Crackle reference (Bicentenial History of West Point) is found on p 60-66 and Ambrose (Duty, Honor, Country) is p28-29.  Ahodges7   talk 12:35, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

See refs for wadsworth I made in the list. RlevseTalk 01:24, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Looks good. I added an accessdate to the Crackel reference.  Ahodges7   talk 01:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Accessdates are for the day you accessed a web cite. Is this on a web site somewhere? RlevseTalk 02:23, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
No its not. My bad. I removed it.  Ahodges7   talk 12:14, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, Wadsworth sort of has an article: Wadsworth's cipher. His name redirects to it. Maybe you could write at least a stub on him and link to the cipher article. I'll update the supe list and the supe template.RlevseTalk 00:36, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

DYK

You can probably get some DYK's out of all these articles you're creating. Put in for them at Template talk:Did you know. RlevseTalk 02:10, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Will do!  Ahodges7   talk 03:17, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
I nominated Charles Henry Tompkins for 6 April. How does it look?  Ahodges7   talk 03:55, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
As the reviewer said, it's too short. There's 1500 characters of prose requirement. RlevseTalk 11:11, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm still new at this. How to you count the prose? I've expanded it quite a bit since last night. Is it long enough now?  Ahodges7   talk 14:47, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Go to my monobook and copy the page size script. "Page size" shows up on the left pane toolbox. It says Tompkins is at 1140 or so, add a bit more. RlevseTalk 16:16, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Man, I'm so stupid when it comes to this stuff, I still don't know what you're talking about when you say "go to my monobook". Sorry. I've expanded Tompkins quite a bit. I think its good now?  Ahodges7   talk 00:41, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

PD

commons:File:Emory J. Pike.png is not your work. It is not your work because you uploaded it or scanned it out of a book. It is a work of the photographer. In the case of Pike's photo, it's PD because it was published before 1923 and also PD because it's a US Gov photo. I've changed the tag to the US GOV one. You need to change the source to the URL you copied it from (preferably a WP one) or book you scanned it from, etc. Do likewise on the other photos you uploaded. Let me know if you have questions. RlevseTalk 02:15, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

OK, how's my update? I seem to get myself in trouble with photos. I don't know if you recall the big dispute that occured over several of the photos during the USMA FA candidacy. For example, the official photo of LTG Hagenbeck was under dispute because his official biography website did not list the author.  Ahodges7   talk 03:16, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Much better. You should probably review other photos you've uploaded. RlevseTalk 11:13, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Monobook

Every user has a page in their userspace called a monobook. It has to be username/monobook.js and is a place to store javascripts that are wiki plugins. I've added several scripts from my monobook to yours: User:Ahodges7/monobook.js. Set a watch on that page. You'll start seeing new options in places, like a peerreview script when in edit mode, popups when you mouse over certain things and now in the toolbox on the left navpane a "page size" option. Click that when you are viewing an article and you'll see page stats display. RlevseTalk 00:57, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Tompkins is 2800k prose now. Notate that on the DYK submission. RlevseTalk 00:58, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
I just made a comment to that effect (I said about 3k prose, not 2800).  Ahodges7   talk 00:59, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
I got it now!  Ahodges7   talk 01:47, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Cats

You need to add Category:United States Military Academy alumni to all these articles you're making for the MOH list. I added it to Lawton.RlevseTalk 01:35, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Will do.  Ahodges7   talk 01:48, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Howard D. Graves

Hello! Your submission of Howard D. Graves at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! JamieS93 14:21, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Should be up to snuff now. RlevseTalk 14:54, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help!  Ahodges7   talk 15:57, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
There seems to be even more info in that NYT article that can be added. RlevseTalk 16:10, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Nice expansion. :) The article has been approved at T:TDYK. I've been offline for maybe 3 hours, and it looks like everybody else has scurried around and clarified/verified the issues. ;) Best, JamieS93 17:58, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

MOH lists

Looks like your two DYK noms are going to make it. Another thing you may want to do is, as you make the new articles, make sure the file name matches what the main MOH list, such as List_of_Medal_of_Honor_recipients_for_the_Indian_Wars, is pointing to. For example, if you name the article John Doe Smith and the MOH list points to John D. Smith, it'd still be a redlink. But pls concentrate on finish creating MOH articles first. RlevseTalk 15:16, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Just a note to let you know your work is noticed and appreciated! My area of interest is the history of the United States Army between the Civil War and World War I, so after seeing your bio of Albert Leopold Mills, I just thought I should say howdy and leave a token of gratitude. I hope to run into you again. Keep it up!! Ejosse1 (talk) 20:49, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

McClernand

"before graduating from West Point in 1867. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry upon graduation from the academy on June 15, 1870"...where's this 1867 from? He can't have graduated in both years, I think 1870 is correct. RlevseTalk 00:30, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Good catch. I misread the source. I've reworded, it now reads: "He spent his early school years in Jacksonville and Springfield before graduating from West Point in 1867. He was assigned to the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in 1870, beginning nearly nearly 30 years in various assignments in the American West."  Ahodges7   talk 00:34, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
What ref says 1867? The AOG says 1870. ??? RlevseTalk 00:35, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
The arlington reference says 1867. I assumed the date difference was for training and an unmentioned assignment. If AOG say s 1870, then the arlington 1867 must be a mistake.  Ahodges7   talk 00:37, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. Check Cullum, prob the best source. RlevseTalk 00:40, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
1870 makes more sense too, he'd have been 22, In 1867 he was only 19 and with a 4-year program he'd have started at 15. RlevseTalk 00:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
"Appointed from Illinois, Cadet, United States Military Academy, 1 September1866 (36)

Second Lieutenant, 2nd U.S. Cavalry, 15 June 1870" Arlington contradicts itself, if cadet life started in 1866, he'd not have graduated in 1867, they stopped that stuff by 1812 or so. RlevseTalk 00:43, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

CULLUM: "2347. (Born Ill.) .EDWARD 3. McCLERNAND*(Ap'd at Large) .36 1Military History. - Cadet at the Military Academy, Sep. 1, 1866, to June 15, 1870, when he was graduated and promoted in the", link is here RlevseTalk 00:51, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Dave Richard Palmer seems cut and pasted from one source

For a few hours, I'll defer from tagging the entire page as copyvio, but you need to re-write or quote this text. BusterD (talk) 11:09, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Tag as you wish, but respectfully, the entire entry is not cut and pasted, though some is. Admittedly, nearly the entire page's information comes from one source because I simply have not had a chance to modify and augment with more sources. For whatever reason, there is little on the web that I can find about this individual despite his prolific career as an army officer. If you noticed, I annotated on my initial edit when I started the article that I was going to the USMA library today to acquire his published work to get more information for this article. I will work to paraphrase it more later today when my work schedule, which is pretty busy right now, permits. Thanks.  Ahodges7   talk 13:47, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
