Speedy deletion of The Political Quarterly

[edit]

A tag has been placed on The Political Quarterly requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Tiggerjay (talk) 00:32, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

I agree with many of the concerns you expressed in your column on wikipedia speedy deletion.

You have probably noticed that The Political Quarterly was re-instated, about a day after it was deleted. But you are completely correct that it reflects poorly on the wikipedia that quality control volunteers so unfamiliar with basic political science that they didn't recognize Leon Trotsky and Benito Mussolini were passing judgment on whether the article should remain.

I commented on the deleting administrator's lapse in not restoring the comment where you defended the article. I'd like to read your defense.

I also noted a couple of small exaggerations in your column. When you wrote that your defense of the article was "dismissed within two minutes" -- did you mean that User:Tiggerjay dismissed it withing two minutes? As a new contributor you couldn't be expected to know this, but his or her opinion carries no more weight than yours. One of the small, and possibly insignificant exaggerations in your column is that the article wasn't deleted for another four hours. FWIW Tiggerjay hasn't contributed to the wikipedia in over six months.

I am a bit more concerned over a comment the administrator who deleted the article made, when questioned about his or her choice to concur with the nominator. I think we should hold the wikipedia's administrators to a higher standard. It appears from the following comment that the administrator who deleted the article may not have noticed your {{hangon}} -- or chose not to read the defense you offered on the talk page:

I went back and reread the article and I realized I read it wrong, for some reason I thought it was about the man who created it. I went and restored the article as you are correct it doesn't meet A7, so of course feel free to go and improve. Sorry for the mix-up, Im an idiot sometimes :-)

Anyhow, your column raised some excellent points. Thanks for writing it. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 22:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Geoff - sorry to take so long to respond to your kind message on my Talk page - I don't do Wikipedia edits very often and so rarely see my Talk. To be honest I find the Wiki interface rather baffling compared to email or blogs. Thank you for your kind comments about my PC Pro column, which you correctly surmised was in no way an attack on the Wikipedia ideal, of which I'm a great admirer. I can't find my defence against the Political Quarterly speedy deletion in its history, so it's quite possible that I entered it wrongly or in the wrong place: it was simply an explanation of who Trotsky and Mussolini were, and that they were not my friends!

All the best Dick P

Aha, found it!

[edit]

This was the defence against quick deletion that I put up:

Talk: The Political Quarterly.

This article is not about "a person or group of people" but about an institution, namely a 75 year old political magazine of considerable influence and significance. It was founded, edited by and contributed to by various influential political figures who have their own Wikipedia entries, including Leonard Woolf, Leon Trotsky and Benito Mussolini.

Hi Flat Out - thanks for taking the time to review my submission. It would help me make the piece conformable to standards if you could tell me which citations are causing the failure
