Chocolate Math

Global Warming

I've deleted my "personal opinion" which was, as a matter of fact a fact in itself in that we are all contributing to global warming in some way. HAPPY NOW? If you're standing on a WP:SOAPBOX, and it reads as an essay, then yes. We already have an article on Global warming. As I mentioned above, the reservoir article's just fine, barring a few sources and some cleanup. Just the facts, no attempt at analysis or imposition of a particular point of view. Deletion

You shouldn't have deleted andre ball, there was absolutly nothing wrong with the term. It was completly understandable, and not harmful to any person. I think you should reinstate it. I know it is not a term that many people have heard before, but I know people that have heard of it and there new ideas and words created all of the time. Then you will have no difficulty providing two or three references to the term in independent media, preferably of national standing. Please read WP:NOTABILITY. It is not a matter of "don't want my info": it's a matter of meeting our requirements for notability of people and subject matter. There is no indication that you are personally notable in the article: if, however, you can provide multiple examples of third-party coverage in independent media, that would establish notability in your own right (as opposed to the website, which is already included and may be the best place for a mention of you as the founder). I do a WHOIS before blocking so I don't inadvertently block the US Senate or Qatar or something. There's a link at the bottom of the IP contribution page - this one came back to RoadRunner, a generic IP. That's not to say it's not a school - it's just not directly allocated. We would like to add some of the TV pilot visuals so that the kids can see them when they look up the sprogs, but I cannot work out how to add images. Since you own the copyright, you should be able to release them under GFDL. Please note that once, released, you lose your right to control the use: the only requirement for someone using the image is that they correctly attribute the source. If control of use is important to you, you might not want to post the images. As far as actually posting the images, you will see a link to "upload file" on the left side of the page. Follow the instructions, and upload to Commons by preference so it's available to all Wikimedia projects. Make sure you fill out the licensing information (and understand it), and you will almost certainly have to prove your ownership of the content via WP:OTRS. Your comment confirms what I was thinking, however I don't think just tagging is the best way to make your point. You seem to be able to describe your concerns reasonably well - I think I will open a request for comment, in which you are encouraged to participate. I will not block you, but please stop placing the POV tag. It's always better to simply make a case on the talk page: POV tagging is for more significant issues. You haven't gone through the agony of coercing a sufferer to well-being! I have experienced this condition, or one with very similar symptoms, first-hand, and would very much like to see this information posted to ensure the speedy recovery of other sufferers. I'm not sure about the "medical" side of the disorder, but some of the suggestions for easing/curing the disorder are very helpful!

It appears from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Video games notable for negative reception (2nd nomination) that the commenters understood your reasoning, and were initially inclined to agree, but moved to keep after actually reading the article. Nobody thought you were being point-y, that I see, or thought it was an improper nom. In contrast, Video games that have been considered the greatest ever seems to me to have been a list of lists. Disasters tend to be inherently easier to document than successes. A well-written "notable for positive reception" article might well succeed if it's formulated along the same lines as its antithesis, and you should recruit those who commented if you want to try for feedback. Not me, though - my knowledge on the subject is, well, antique. Zork, anyone? I anxiously await the next release of Duke Nukem - I hear it'll hit the stores any day now! Blanking of user talk page, block without final warning: "Lard" vandals

First, when you posted an indef block notice, [4] why did you remove the previous content of the user page? It is a good idea to leave it, because it may provide context for the necessity of the block. Second, why was an indefinite block necessary without a final warning? I had reverted one of his vandal edits and was in the process of posting a warning when you blanked the page and blocked. I agreee his contribution history of that of a vandalism-only account, but they usually do a vandalism after final warning and then get the same block, but with less wiggle room if they appeal. You recently deleted this article with a rationale of "A7 (bio): Real person; doesn't indicate importance/significance" I believe this to be inaccurate. Having read the article before it was deleted I think that there were several indications of the individual's importance/significance including the subject winning a Nobel prize and being the first person to give birth to a cat. We have articles on many people who have done the former and almost certainly would have an article on someone who achieved the latter. I would suggest that in future a more appropriate rationale for such articles would be based on speedy delete criterion G3 (blatant and obvious misinformation). When I put that edit on yesterday, I was fully expecting Wolfkeeper to delete it. But I was very careful to make sure that the edit contained only basic textbook material and that there could be no possible grounds to justify him deleting it.

You will recall that my block last week was because I was accused of incivility by having accused Wolfkeeper of wikistalking for having deleted stuff that had put on the main page.

Interestingly, Wolfkeeper has attempted to justify his actions this time. His first reason was pathetic. It was something to do with the section being out of place. The second reason merely exposes Wolfkeeper's total lack of knowledge about the topic in question.

The marble experiences a side on Coriolis force as it rolls out to the edge of the turntable. Interestingly, PhySusie who I presume was attempting to back up Wolfkeeper has then come in and stated this very fact as if it were me that didn't know it.

If you are genuinely interested in justice on wikipedia and proving that there is no corruption, I would be most grateful if you could monitor the ensuing debate very carefully.

I would like to further clarify that the edit which I made yesterday was totally outside the issue of ongoing disagreement. I made sure of that because I wanted Wolfkeeper exposed. I knew he would delete it, yet is was a very carefully thought out example which ilustrates both centrifugal force and Coriolis force perfectly.

Now what has happened is that Itub and PhySusie are trying to justify Wolfkeeper's actions and in doing so totally contradicting what has already been agreed.

A marble sits in a radial groove in a rotating turntable. You will agree with me that centrifugal force will cause the marble to roll outwards.

I am up against people who are trying to deny this. Note in particular PhySusie who states that there is no need for any outward radial force.

How do you argue against people like that? Are they genuine? Did she just come in to back up Wolfkeeper? She said so many things wrong that even Itub openly disagreed with her. That of course wasn't her aim so she immediately set herself right with Itub and then twisted it around to make it my fault by insinuating that I hadn't described the situation clearly enough. She interpreted my term 'radial groove' to be curving outwards. Radial means radial.

Itub himself clearly understood the picture but he is trying to argue that the centrifugal foce in question only exists for observers on the rotating turntable.

Acroterion, thanks for your reply. Yes I am totally outnumbered as regards a key point. I don't believe that the rotating frame of reference transformation equations can be applied to non-rotating situations.

But the edit war on the main page has not been about that issue recently.

I very carefully chose an example of centrifugal force that would actually be covered by those equations. I did that deliberately in order to totally remove any possible excuse that they might have to delete it, although I fully expected that Wolfkeeper would delete it anyway because he deletes my edits systematically.

I wanted you to look at the pathetic excuses that they were giving to justify Wolfkeeper's actions.

As you can see, Itub has been denying that a centrifugal force is involved in the outward radial acceleration of the marble along the groove.

It is that kind of blatantly dishonest denial that I wanted an administrator to look at.

Basically they are covering up for wikistalking on the part of Wolfkeeper.

You want me to use administrative tools in a content dispute where you feel outnumbered. You use words like "pathetic", "blatantly dishonest denial" and "wikistalking" with respect to those who disagree with you. I've seen wikistalking: this isn't it. Administrators aren't referees. You must either convince those who disagree with you through civil persuasion, or you must be willing to understand and accept the arguments of those who disagree with you. Please moderate your language - it's just an encyclopedia, and talk pages of articles on physics shouldn't resemble those of the Balkans.

Acroterion, you've disappointed me. You've played the old game of asking for a citation for something that is obvious. For a while I thought that you may have been more mature than the others. But you have done the Pontius Pilate. Centrifugal force exists in that scenario and you know it. The fact that the others are denying it means that they are not being straight. You are now turning a blind eye. You are too scared to go to the centrifugal force talk page and say that this scenario quite obviously involves centrifugal force and so those who are denying it are clearly not being honest. You would reinstate the section and block anybody who tries to remove it.

It is your job as an administrator to warn people like Wolfkeeper. When he removed that edit originally, you could have left a message in his talk page warning him that his removal of the material appears to be vandalism and that he should use the sandbox for experiments.

But I can see now that all administartors in wikipedia are scared of confronting groups of team editors. They are too weak to deal fairly with edit wars and they choose to back the majority side. Invariably when drawn in they begin to drop civility warnings in the tray of the minority party. I didn't notice you giving Wolfkeeper any warnings for his abusive language not that I get over worried about abusive language, but it's interesting to see how these administrators reserve all their warnings for the minority party. Maryland NHLs

Hi Acroterion -- Glad to see you are editing/creating articles on Maryland NHLs and perhaps other NRHPs. The List of NHLs in MD sure does need development to a more complete condition, and your taking the lead is appreciated. I ran out of steam in developing that list-article a while back, but i will try to chip in a bit where possible now.

A comment: in NHL list-articles that i have worked on, the description column of the list-article was used for notes that are not meant to remain permanently in the article, such as the NRHP refnums and "reasonable-to-try" wikilinks. These notes can be helpful at the point of creating the new NHL article. If and when the corresponding NHL article is created, the description should be replaced by a real, short description. I would prefer your leaving the notes there, until you create the article, then by all means replace whats there.

Another comment: while the names of individual articles such as Edna E. Lockwood (bugeye) can be changed to reasonable common names of the ships/places, for consistency in the NHL list-article the displayed name of the NHL should be the NHL program name for the ship/place (per the NHL article on the ship/place, or per the National Park Service's PDF list of NHLs cited in the list-article), with a wikilink to whatever is the current name for the article, which can be different.

I was appalled to see that almost half the NHL's in Maryland were redlinked, so I'm working my way through. I'll just step the list page back until they're all in. I see your point about Wikipedia naming convention vs. NRHP convention, and I think it's easier to do all the notes at one time, so I'll revert. Thanks for the suggestions, and I have a question:

The Gambrill House doesn't seem to appear in the NHL database - it's an NRHP property according to the Maryland Historical Trust, and they're pretty good about that sort of thing. Is there something I'm missing? Acroterion _(talk) 19:09, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Okay, good. As you probably understand, all NHLs are automatically listed as NRHPs, but most NRHPs are not also NHLs. I agree, the Gambrill House does not appear to be an NHL, and should not be in the List of NHLs article. There are in fact just 71 NHLs in the state (plus perhaps one or two shared ones primarily listed in another state), while the list has more than that. The list needs to be cross-checked against the National Park Service's PDF file cited in the list-article for another reason anyhow (to add specific dates of NHL designation, which are often different than NRHP dates, while the list-table was partly generated from a NRHP database so may show NRHP dates instead).

Don't worry about reverting the list-article, the names can be cleaned up to show NHL program names in the one sweep through, using the official NPS list. cheers, doncram (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

An amusing factoid: Whitehall was managed after the departure of Horatio Sharpe by his secretary, John Ridout. The Maryland Historical Trust's executive director these days is Orlando Ridout V. (unindent) I just revisited my articles on South Carolina sites, for example the first one covered by List of NHLs in SC. I and others implemented a standard format footnote and external link to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History webpage that exists for each SC NHL or other NRHP. SC is the most comparable to MD that i know of, that way.

How about the following formats for a footnote and for an external link, for Maryland Historical Trust sites:

See how this appears as example in the Whitehall, Maryland article. Note, I chose to use "Whitehall, Anne Arundel County" as the page title. That phrase is the title given for it by Maryland Historic Trust in its index of NHLs, page 7 of http://www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/nr/NRNHLList.aspx. The actual page linked to just shows Property: Whitehall. Also note I am choosing to include a footnote format with a reusable name (you can cite later in the same article using <ref name="mhtsum"/>), and I am further adding pretty much the same info as an external link (but with a little customization to say that there is one photo taken in 1979 for this site). I think that for South Carolina and here, the website is really pretty good and deserves to be "promoted" as an external link, for readers who would like to know more. I do not choose to do that for the National Park Service's NHL summary webpages, which are good sources for some info like NHL date, but which I generally do not think too highly of for referring readers to.

You could choose to include the external links for these MHT summary webpages or not, either way is fine by me. But I do think that the footnote format that shows the name of the site, Whitehall in this case, is better than showing Maryland Historical Trust (which may suggest to the reader that it is a general website, not as good as a customized webpage about this particular place). Maybe for creating a title for each MHT summary webpage, it would be best to combine together only phrases that are visible in the article, like the Property Name field and the Location field. Hence, from "Property Name: Whitehall

Date Listed: 10/15/1966 Inventory No.: AA-325 Location: Whitehall Road, Skidmore, Anne Arundel County", select "Whitehall, Whitehall Road, Skidmore, Anne Arundel County" as the title to use in the footnote and/or external link. That would be consistent with the site names used in South Carolina comparable listings, too. I think your suggestions are fine - I, too, struggled with the notion of what to title the refs, compounded by my general incompetency at setting up referencing formats. I tend to scavenge whatever looks good and adapt it to the occasion. More specificity is better, I think.

It appears that Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and the Territories still need some work on their NHL lists I've been doing a few National Register articles in West Virginia to get to know the sources, but I'll shift over to the needier states with missing NHL's. About competency in references, well, i think we all try to get by mostly by finding one good example and copying it. Yes, those are indeed the states still needing NHL stubs to be created. Their lists are all in good shape in terms of being relatively accurate lists, perhaps fully verified (unlike the sad shape the incorrect MD list was in). But it still takes time to create the NHL articles, and your help on any of these will be greatly appreciated. It has happened to me a bunch of times now, that i create an NHL article only to be informed that there already was one about the place. I end up merging the new article material into the pre-existing one, and leaving a redirect from the article named for the official NHL name of the place. I'd be grateful if you'd do that for the Huffman ones. I am a bit overwhelmed, there are a lot to go, and i am concerned that the NPS Focus website that serves up the very-useful NRHP nomination docs in PDF, has been malfunctioning. It's very hard to figure some of these out.... Ohio NHLs, and NHL summary webpage

Hey, great about finishing out stubs and/or eliminating red-links for Ohio, together with Stepshep. As i noted to Stepshep, it would be nice also if the NHL articles could include NHL designation date in the NRHP infobox, supported by reference to NHL summary webpage. As i noted to him regarding my revision to Manasseh Cutler Hall, Ohio University, a page he had created:

• the NRHP date is sometimes the same as NHL date, but is distinct and both are needed. NHL date can be before NRHP date or after it. For this one, NRHP date is Oct. 15, 1966 which is the beginning date of the NRHP, while this site and a lot of others were designated NHLs before then all those were added to NRHP on this date. The Elkman infobox generator provides the NRHP date (added = [[October 15]] [[1966]] for this one), which should be kept.
• so for the NHL date, you get that from the NHL summary webpage (which you are familiar with). I cut and paste from another article, and then edit as necessary to add a fully described reference to the NHL webpage:
  designated = [[December 21]], [[1965]]<ref name="nhlsum">{{cite web|url=http://tps.cr.nps.gov/nhl/detail.cfm?ResourceId=439&ResourceType=Building |title=Manasseh Cutler Hall, Ohio University |accessdate=2008-06-16|work=National Historic Landmark summary listing|publisher=National Park Service}}</ref>
• then besides that, i move the NRIS reference up to support the NRHP date (the added= field) because it looks better there in parallel to the NHL reference supporting the NHL date
• and then i re-use the NHL webpage reference in the article
• and i often add a county category, using county available in the NHL webpage, tho this is not important

Texas NHLs and source

Thanks for contributing a bunch of Texas NHLs (at least i think it is you, because someone has been making red-links go away). Given the progress there, I am turning more to try to fix issues raised by Lvklock's review in other states, in the 4th of July NHL drive.

Yes, it's been mostly me. There are three left, and I think there are three commonwealth/territorial NHL's left. Some of the new ones are the stumpiest possible stubs, so I'm going to mine the Handbook of Texas for expansion. I ran across the HoT in a Google search: I think I've seen it before - maybe in the library in college? Seems terribly useful, but I'm sure it's unique to Texas. Mining sounds like you can be ruthless and efficient, which is a good thingk... :) Also, for National Historic Landmarks but not for most other NRHPs, the NRHP inventory/nomination docs (or NHL nomination docs) are available on-line. These are often very well researched and written, and can be definitive about exactly what was landmarked and so on. I just added such reference to U.S. Customhouse and Post Office in MO that you created. I have been routinely adding these to NHL articles, but haven't gotten to Texas ones and am not necessarily trying before 4th of July. What usually works, though, is to copy <ref name="nrhpinv2">{{citation|title={{PDFlink|[http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/REFNUM.pdf National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination: _______]|32 KB}}|date=__, 19__ |author=____ |publisher=National Park Service}} and {{PDFlink|[http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Photos/REFNUM.pdf ''Accompanying ___ photos, exterior and interior, from 19___'']|32 KB}}</ref> into an article, replace two occurences of "REFNUM" by the 8 digit NRHP reference number of the site, and then try the 2 PDF links it generates. If you will write an appropriate, referenced article about a notable person, you may do so at any time. I'm not putting back SUCKS or WAS BORN AN AMPUTEE if that's what you want. Please note that simply being a war veteran does not qualify for inclusion: my own father, uncles, grandfather and father in law would have articles if that was the case. Ok - if you think its too long, leave it out.

Regarding my tone, if you think it's "harsh", there's a reason for it, and your editor Gwen Gale is the cause of that.

If you do not want me to rant, I won't, but would like information on who I should contact regarding her behavior as an editor. I have documented proof from some authors and historians who have had run ins with her over the course of a couple of years, not unlike what I experienced this weekend. As an editor, she is the one who is abusing her editing powers to promote propaganda. She should be banned.

You have a content dispute, and have not conducted yourself with decorum: you've earned a (short) block from me for ignoring warnings about soapboxing, posting manifestos, and attacks on other editors. The appropriate route for content disputes is via a request for comment, not by trying to get those you disagree with "banned". Gwen Gale appropriately recused herself after due consideration - people make mistakes - and you were unblocked, but chose to pursue a vendetta. Big Inch, etc.

I just noticed, coincidentally (quite unrelated to the other recent issue: oh, and see No. 33, which I think applies) that you wrote Big Inch! Nice work; just three nights ago I wrote the East Texas Oil Field article, since I noticed that the existing article had been a copyright violation for in excess of two years, and in writing that I learned what the Big Inch was. Oy veh. And another thing: you beat me on AutoCAD by a bit. I've only been using it since R12, and that's 15 years. Thank you for your help in the other place. I always thought Big Inch was an odd name. I finally did a little research one evening and realized that we had no article, so there it is. I was inordinately proud of it, I'll admit. The Handbook of Texas is a gold mine.

I'll be installing AutoCAD 2009 on some new workstations next week, but my skills are stuck back around 2000. I started using AutoCAD around 1985, I think, and in earnest in '89. The newer people in the office have passed me by in the skills department, which is fine because I can give them more assignments.
