Problem with This Month in Education: March 2014

You forgot to close the outer table, so the next comment on people's talk pages renders inside the outer table like this. Your message needs a second |} after the first one. HTH --RexxS (talk) 19:22, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for pointing that out to me, RexxS. It does help, a lot! This was my first time delivering the newsletter and I didn't know about the second |} , but I do now for next time! Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 12:44, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work!

A query

[edit]

Hi, Anna,
I was curious if you had another WP account you edited from before this WMF account was created. I was just looking at the background of WMF staff members and most had more editing experience than this account. But for I know, you were active on the Commons or another WikiProject. Thanks for considering answering my question. Liz Read! Talk! 22:31, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Liz. Thanks for your note. Yes, I do have a personal account, User:Msannakoval, which I registered several years ago, but I've never been a very active editor. My primary appreciation for Wikipedia and the other projects came from using it myself and with my students! I've learned a lot more about the editing side since I started working here, and it's my goal to contribute more regularly as a volunteer, and to try to get more of the girls and women in my world to do so as well. :) All the best, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 18:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for such a courteous response, Anna. I had assume being an active editor was a prerequisite for working at WMF but I guess it is not crucial if one has other skills one can bring to the table! Nice to meet another teacher although it has been a few years since I was in front of a classroom. ;-) Liz Read! Talk! 21:04, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, Liz; it's great to know another teacher onwiki. :) I think you're the first I've met. :) I'm not aware of any editing prerequisite, and I don't see one mentioned on jobs.wikimedia.org. It's my understanding that the WMF hires all kinds of people. They do bring aboard a lot of editors, but they also sometimes hire people with unique experiences, perspectives and backgrounds -- like me. And I'm glad they did. :) Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 23:56, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I wasn't serious about having an actual editing prerequisite...just that a lot of employees started out as editors. Liz Read! Talk! 03:30, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Better to be too literal than too vague! :) Take care, Liz. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 16:24, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tour barnstar

[edit]

So I'm not sure what you were trying to do with this, but I've reverted it - we need the </small> in place so that the following text posted to the student's talk page by someone else is the normal size, and you didn't really want to sign your own username in the template. Nikkimaria (talk) 04:02, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:Nikkimaria: Sorry about that; I forgot to close the small tag. That page uses the recursive substitution trick, so that the actual page text includes the 'subst', which then gets substituted when people use the tour. See m:Help:Recursive conversion of wikitext. The end result is that the page itself is unstable; if you make an edit (even saving without any changes) it will save the substitution. Sorry for the confusion.--ragesoss (talk) 14:55, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ragesoss, for clearing things up. I'm sorry, too, Nikkimaria. I think this was a case where we were both trying to help and our wires just got crossed. I do appreciate you keeping an eye on this. Sage says you're awesome, and I have to agree. :) Best to you both, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 15:18, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers Anna. Sage, I was using the first technique described on the local page - does that need to be changed in some way? Nikkimaria (talk) 03:37, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
User:Nikkimaria: I added a bit of extra info to that page. The typical method of using noinclude tags doesn't work in this case, because guided tours does not follow those tags.--ragesoss (talk) 04:04, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anna, nice to meet you! (I saw your "thank you" in my notifications.) That very problematic Citizendium article is written by an indefinitely blocked Wikipedia user. More background here. Philippe Beaudette or Maggie Dennis at WMF would be able to provide you with even more background, although I think it would be better to discuss it with them off-wiki. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 17:40, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Voceditenore. :) You're very kind to teach me the backstory. And I appreciate this advisory. I will check with Philippe and Maggie. Take care, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 05:19, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

One of your students is editing disruptively. Please assist. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 02:15, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking into in now, Jytdog. Thanks so much for letting me know. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 03:18, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ADW

[edit]

Hi Anna, Just a heads up: I modified the Request instructor right page of the Assignment Design Wizard to give two options for US/CA and not US/CA. The first creates an ENB section pinging Helaine and I, the latter pings Pharos, Bluerasberry, and Kevin Gorman as before, but I've also added your username to that list. Just letting you know in case you object. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:31, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Ryan (Wiki Ed)! That's awesome! Really appreciate you doing this. It should help a lot. :) Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 14:38, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Colonia Doctores, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Colonias. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Kazakhstan

[edit]

Hi Anna, I recently noticed outreach:Education/Countries/Kazakhstan, outreach:Talk:Education/Countries/Kazakhstan. Are you aware of these recent reports: [1], [2], [3], [4], as well as [5] and [dead link]? Andreas JN466 16:23, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See also today's article in Eurasianet: Wikipedia Founder Distances Himself from Kazakhstan PR Machine. --Andreas JN466 02:17, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Andreas, sorry that I missed this talk page notification. Thank you very much for this warning and for the links to the recent reports. The only contact that I have had with the Kazakh community has been with Dr. Bakytgul Salykhova, whom I met at EduWiki 2014 in Edinburgh. She is training teachers and students to edit Wikipedia in clubs at schools and universities there. (See the summary on the talk page here.) I see no harm in that. I appreciate you looking out for the education program and flagging this for me. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 22:20, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Note that according to her LinkedIn profile, she is a project manager for the dep. governor's media group. As such, commentators are likely to perceive her as an employee of a government front organisation, with corresponding risks for your programme. Andreas JN466 06:26, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Will keep that in mind going forward. Thanks, Andreas. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 15:19, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Adventure nominated for deletion

[edit]

Hi, I'm notifying you of a discussion where I mentioned you because you have been involved with The Wikipedia Adventure. You can comment here: Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Adventure_(2nd_nomination). Cheers, Jake Ocaasi t | c 15:37, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for notifying me, Ocaasi. I'm sorry to hear that. I'll post my comments now. Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 15:21, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comments posted here. FWIW. <3 Your reply was very well-documented and detailed; it clearly turned the tide; congratulations, Ocaasi. I'm relieved to see that this second MfD was also unsuccessful. I've also posted my support on TWA's talk page here. I hope to discourage future attempts to delete this helpful content. However, do keep in mind that, if need be, you could always ask the community at Outreach wiki to host TWA there instead. ;) Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 11:37, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
