Cal Poly

--Dabackgammonator (talk) 21:30, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I will try and do what I can when possible. It certainly won't be to the level that you have expanded the article (good job), but hopefully it will help. Thanks for the invitation . . . Alanraywiki (talk) 01:00, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
I truly appreciate it. Thank you very much.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 03:04, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi Alan. Thanks for making those edits to the Cal Poly Pomona article! They have certainly improved its overall quality. Mostly I have been editing the "history" section of the article under my sandbox here: User:Dabackgammonator/sandbox. Feel free to edit it as you please. Take care Alan.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 19:35, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Prop 8 removal

Hi, the statement you removed is documented by the blog entry with a link to a ca.gov website - I think the blog reference provides the context better than a direct link and is worth preserving; would you be satisfied with an additional direct reference to it from the article? --EqualRights (talk) 20:43, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

I still do not think it belongs there for a couple of reasons: 1) The links to the California Secretary of State web site are broken and 2) the blog article has not been through the fact-checking process that a newspaper or other journal goes through so, as with any other blog, its reliability is suspect. If this information is pertinent to the proposition, then I'm sure a more reliable source can be found. This proposition and article have strong opinions on both sides, and we all know that WP articles must have a neutral point of view. Some may think that any issues that the organization may have are irrelevant to the proposition itself, others do not. Some want to put the information in to sway opinion. I don't know enough about California Renewal to opine one way or the other. I think most of the information from the reference does not belong in an encylopedia but rather where it is right now . . . on a blog. In any case, I will not revert if a more reliable source can be found. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 21:17, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
That's odd, that Secretary Of State California Business Portal link works for me, showing "CALIFORNIA RENEWAL...Status: suspended" --EqualRights (talk) 23:05, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
It's working for me now, too. I had received a 404 error on the site before. Well, scratch my first comment then. I still think a major newspaper or similar journal would be a better source than the blog. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 23:28, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Cal Poly Article

Hello. I respectfully object to your reversion of my edit in the Cal Poly article, and stand by my position on the naming of the school. As I do not want the incorrect information that you have re-inserted into the article to remain, how do I go about changing the situation? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.57.143.208 (talk) 05:51, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I think we need to differentiate between what the university considers correct usage of the name and, as the first sentence states, what it is "commonly called". It is called just Cal Poly per their style guide and probably by those on the Central Coast. However, those outside of the area, including the CSU system itself, commonly refers to the university as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal Poly SLO. In fact, section 89005 of the Education Code refers to the name "California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo." I do not recall ever seeing it Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. My edit, with its reference (which you removed), still stands. Alanraywiki (talk) 15:02, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
I believe the university knows what it's own name is, as shown clearly in the reference listed--which you removed. I think we should get an administrator involved in this matter. How do we do so? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.57.143.208 (talk) 07:31, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Your reference is still there . . . see note 3. And the first step to resolving this issue would be to move this discussion from my talk page to the article talk page to allow more editors to weigh in. I will copy this thread over. Alanraywiki (talk) 14:10, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

UC endowment

I had a concern about the UC endowment figures. I was going to post it on your talk page, but I already posted it here. Am I missing something? What are your thoughts? — ŁittleÄlien¹8² (talk\contribs) 20:04, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

That is an interesting topic. I just started a thread on the WikiProject Universities project here about the UC endowment a few hours ago. I invite you to review what has been posted and give your own thoughts. However, FYI, I would not assume a 20% increase in the endowment this year. Increases are a function of a variety of things such as gifts, investment performance, and spending distribution. The numbers for 6/30/08 are not out yet, and we should not project what we think they will be based on past performance. I know the Chronicle of Higher Education has already reported that UCLA's investment return was flat for fiscal year 2008. Anyway, hope to hear from you at WikiProject Universities. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 20:14, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I did not assume a 20% increase. I was merely trying to illustrate the point that the USNWR figures for 2008 are entirely plausible --and not grossly inaccurate, as some of the other editors have suggested. I have yet to hear a good argument as to why we should reject these figures. Though USNWR has come under a lot of fire for their subjective ranking criteria, I doubt they would simply "fudge" objective figures like endowment fund values. I'm not trying to argue that we should use these values for articles (I will make an argument for this on the Universities project page), but what I'm trying to say is that I think there are plenty of editors that underestimate the credibility of these figures, largly in part, because of the arguments of one (or a few) editor(s). Thank you for your response. — ŁittleÄlien¹8² (talk\contribs) 21:06, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

The VP candidates and Prop 8

CalState SB

The numbers you said I made up (CalState SB artivle), I got those numbers from the universities website you can even take a look so you can not say I made them up, you should have asked me were I got them from insted of saying I am making them up because I didn't. House1090 (talk) 00:05, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

You are right, I apologize for saying you made them up. However, the number from the web site was different than your number (you put 17,000 and the number from the web site was 17,066) and, as I keep asking you to do, you did not provide a reference. Without the reference, how would anyone think otherwise that the number was just a guess? Alanraywiki (talk) 00:42, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Its Ok, well I need to learn how to provide a refrence. House1090 (talk) 17:03, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia has some good guidelines on providing references at its citing sources article. For me, the easiest way to start out was to look at how others did their citations. Take a look, for example, on how User:Amerique did the reference on the CinemaStar closure. There is always some trial and error involved at the beginning, but that is okay. Good luck, Alanraywiki (talk) 17:16, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Laie and Honolulu

"(cur) (last) 14:04, 14 October 2008 Alanraywiki (Talk | contribs | block) (14,783 bytes) (I disagree that Laie is part of Honolulu. It is 35 miles away on the other side of the island and separated by mountains.) (rollback | undo)"

Alanray, this isn't something that is disagreeable. ALL of Oahu is a part of the City and County of Honolulu - However that is distinct from "Honolulu," which is the CDP covering the central business district. Wikipedia's "Honolulu" is the CDP while the municipality is at Honolulu County, Hawaii. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:44, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

The paragraph says: "Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYUH) is a private, undergraduate co-educational university in the Lā'ie community of the City and County of Honolulu in Hawaii, United States (thirty-five miles from the community of Honolulu)" - by the community of Honolulu I am referring to that place on the other side of the mountains. By the "City and County of Honolulu" that is the municipality, and by Lā'ie that is the community which Brigham Young is located in. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:46, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

I added a comment to the article's talk page. I found out after my edit that the City & County of Honolulu covers the entire island. I still think the reference can be confusing and that some readers will think that Laie is a suburb of Honolulu because it includes the word "city", but because it is technically correct I won't remove it. Thanks for your explanation . . . Alanraywiki (talk) 17:00, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Size of Ohio State University

ASU surpasses single campus enrollment and total student enrollment:

http://uoia.asu.edu/files/quickfacts/Quick_Facts_Fall_2008.pdf —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hunterxaz (talkcontribs) 15:53, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reference. I think there is a timing difference going on at this article right now. The citation was from 2006, the List of largest United States university campuses by enrollment article uses 2007 numbers, and the numbers you just gave me are for 2008. I think we're best off using the 2007 numbers until all the 2008 enrollment numbers are in. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 16:07, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Alan what's up! Check this out, the Cal Poly Pomona project was on the student paper The Poly Post! I told those guys about you, but I read the article and they didn't mention your great contributions. I mentioned Dynaflow and Curtis Clark as well. In any case, I hope this gets a couple of people interested about joining the project. I appreciate your help on the making of this Cal Poly Pomona project and I hope we set another milestone by getting the article to GA status. Thank for your help Alanray!--Dabackgammonator (talk) 03:53, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

My Gubernatorial Race

I can understand how you might think that I am not a major candidate, so you deleted me (citing no press coverage). I have filled out the paperwork and it has been received by the Calif. Secretary of State. I am also, the only Republican to have that honor. But, when press coverage is given and cited, you adjust the line further, saying that CSUF's newspaper is not good enough. Where does the line in the sand get drawn next? Must I get the nomination to prove it? Maybe I should win. Maybe that would be good enough.... Furthermore, why didn't you delete the guy on the Democrat side (Aguirre), he didn't have any press coverage? If you're going to edit Wiki, then be consistant. Don't delete me because of your bias.

Shvyka (talk) 06:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Scott Vyka, Republican Candidate for Governor, CAShvyka (talk) 06:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I understand how you may feel frustrated with Wikipedia policies, but here is the requirement for notability from Wikipedia:Notability (people): Just being an elected local official, or an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the primary notability criterion of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." One sentence in a college newspaper that erroneously states you are the "only Republican running for Governor in 2010" (that will not be the case when the election is closer) is not significant coverage. If the Register or Times picks it up, that is probably the line in the sand. You correcly deleted Aguirre for the same reason. By the way, I happen to be a Republican. Orange Coast College

I've been asked to update/correct the Orange Coast College Wikipedia entry by campus administration. Thus far, I've corrected the founding date 1947 noting its first classes opening in fall 1948, and I've added certificates of achievement degrees. However, I have major changes to make to the history section and, as a new Wikipedia contributor, do this with a fair degree of apprehension.

In order to correct the history, I will need to greatly expand it due to references made by the original contributor. I will also need to strike a good portion of the original entry under the history heading. My references are online portions of the Orange Coast College historical publication, Tumbleweeds to Roses, and portions of the Orange Slices Archives. Tumbleweeds to Roses was written by founding faculty/staff members, and the Orange Slices columns were written by Jim Carnett, who recently retired after serving 37 years as OCC's Director of Community Relations.

My initial question is, considering the size of my anticipated edit, how do I request preliminary peer review of these changes prior to posting?

I have noted your multiple contributions to this page and thought you may be able to provide some guidance.--Fanny Campbell (talk) 06:00, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

You may feel more comfortable posting your proposed edit to the article's talk page at Talk:Orange Coast College first. Other editors can then review it before it is posted to the article. Good luck, Alanraywiki (talk) 13:19, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Susan B. Neuman

Re: Susan B. Neuman California State University alumni link to new wiki article. Thanks for redirecting me to CSU Eastbay alumni section instead of the California State University site. Glad to help. I removed the notable alumni section because the campuses generally grant those, rather than the system itself, so there will not be any alumni in the section. biased user - Stormrider

The personal control Stormrider is exherting over "Mormonism and Christianity" page is based on his own personal beliefs. He is one of the reasons that wikipedia is a joke. If you try to make additions that he does not personally agree with then he just removes them. He does not add meaningful interaction concerning the disputed addition. Wikipedia will be a distortion of the discussion as long as people like him run roughshod over it. 74.203.158.34 (talk) 16:55, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Your edit appears to violate the Wikipedia policies of neutrality and no original research for the conclusions made. Rather than engage in an edit war, it would be better to discuss your edit on the article's talk page. That may clear up some misunderstandings on both sides. Alanraywiki (talk) 17:02, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Was told to take it to the discussion page which I have done but I am ignored and Stormrider continues to delete my additions! What a hypocrite! 74.203.158.34 (talk) 17:12, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Please discuss the content of your edit on the talk page, not the editor. Your edit should stay off the article until a consensus is reached regarding the wording and links. Alanraywiki (talk) 17:16, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I have no problem discussing my edits but that is not Stormrider's method. After I made my additions, he deleted them without any discussion at all even though it has a citation. Also, the additional links were deleted even though there was no POV involved beyond what the sites themselves have. Later when he chnaged the wording for the links, he removed any reference to mormonism which does not acurrately explain the point of the links. One is a former mormon that point is valid to the discussion. The other I made mention that even thought it is not dedicated solely to mormonism it does discuss it. 74.203.158.34 (talk) 17:26, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Discussing your edit on the article's talk page will bring other editors into the discussion. It will also allow a more detailed review and discussion of the pros and cons to your edit. I would also recommend you review the wording of your edit. Wording such as "the truth about this cult" and "difference between their belief and Christianity" (to name a couple) are opinion and not written from a neutral point of view. That kind of wording is why your edit is being reverted and why it should be discussed on the article's talk page. Alanraywiki (talk) 17:43, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:BYAcademy.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:BYAcademy.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NW (Talk) 18:19, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I must have forgotten to release the image into the public domain when I uploaded it. It should be fixed now. Alanraywiki (talk) 18:55, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Ridgecrest, California

Can you explain why the bank information on the Ridgecrest, California page was deleted? I updated the AltaOne link and whammo! It's all gone!

Sure, I'll be glad to explain. First, it was no reflection on your edit at all. The Ridgecrest, California article had become a collection of lists of banks, hospitals, shopping centers, etc. Those kind of lists generally are not appropriate for Wikipedia. More information on the editing guidelines in this area can be found on WP:NOTDIRECTORY and WP:USCITY. Thanks for the inquiry, Alanraywiki (talk) 14:40, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I think this is relevant to Steven McQueen's page. The article says that McQueen sought unconventional treatment but has casted a bad light on it. If fact, years later, it is shown to have success.

Of note, Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez ( http://www.dr-gonzalez.com ) has been treating cancer patients much better than conventional doctors. NIH even sponsored a clinical trial of 10 patients with pancreatic cancer and their survival rate is much higher than those treated conventionally. Dr. Kelly's work of treating cancer are quite similar to the method of Dr. Gonzalez —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.244.102.2 (talk) 18:04, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I disagree. The article is about the person, not the treatment (although it is mentioned). Gonzalez is not relevant to McQueen. I also made a comment at Talk:Steve McQueen. A discussion there of your edit will allow more editors to weigh in. Alanraywiki (talk) 18:10, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Interested in running for admin?

Let me know and I'll nominate you if you'd like to try for it; you seem pretty reasonable, active and drama-free. Best, Ameriquedialectics 18:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. I will think about taking that step and let you know. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 00:32, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

You reverted me because of the refrence there included, but if you see the refreced article it said that the valley (must keep reading below) can reach 700 m, and I think that the 700 m its talking about is in Yucaipa (700m = ~2600 ft). House1090 (talk) 21:12, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

A couple of questions come out of this, then: 1) What reference indicates that Yucaipa is in the San Bernardino Valley geological area, and 2) at what elevation does the valley end and the mountains begin? I also have to mention that I think this article would be better just addressing the geological area as it did originally with a hatnote referring readers to the IE or SB County. Just my opinion, though. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 21:23, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I would say the Crafton Hills near yucaipa right befor entering the low desert,in banning marks the end of the SB valley. The SB mountains dont begin untill the US national forest begins near Oak Glen, n. San Bernardino, n. Fontana. Yes I added all that info. to the valley article because take a look at the San Fernando Valley article and San Gabriel Valley as well. User: Amerique agrees with you as well. One more thing Omintrans cosideres Yucaipa in the SB Valley in there website also. House1090 (talk) 21:33, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
That information needs references per Wikipedia:Verifiability. WP:REFB may help you out. Good luck, Alanraywiki (talk) 21:47, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Its okay I will leave it the way it is now. If you and User:Amerique want I can have the article addressing the geological area as it did originally, and create a Greater San Bernardino Article, but I would have references to back it up. House1090 (talk) 21:51, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, are you doing a long-term cleanup of the article? I was going to get around to some fixes myself, but I had to address some incivility on the part of one of it's primary contributors first, and didn't want to cause any edit conflicts with you. Cheers! --inquietudeofcharacter (talk) 19:01, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

No long-term cleanup, just stopping by when I had a few moments to add and swap some refs. Go ahead and do your fixes . . . there shouldn't be any edit conflicts from me. I saw the unnecessary comments from the editor. I know I appreciate your diligence on the Wikipedia project. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 19:10, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Welcome

I like to come up with my own greetings and yes they were spelled correctly. If not, sorry and let's move on.(Zaxby (talk) 02:06, 20 August 2009 (UTC))

Okay, but the welcome template gives new editors links to find out more about how Wikipedia works, like the one on your talk page. Greetings like "Be cool" are not helpful. And no, your greetings are not spelled correctly. In the context you are using the word, it is "your" (possessive), not "you're" (a contraction of you are). Alanraywiki (talk) 02:10, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

You're is showing ownership of his/her talk page.(Zaxby (talk) 02:33, 20 August 2009 (UTC))

Then you will want to use "your", not the contraction. See WP:MOS. Alanraywiki (talk) 02:37, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

That we are allowed to edit freely as patriotic Americans. Of course, there is a border line to that and I'm enforcing that as a recent changes patroller.(Zaxby (talk) 02:32, 20 August 2009 (UTC))

Mike Marshall

Mike Marshall is the current manager of the Yuma Scorpions and won a World Series ring.(Zaxby (talk) 13:42, 22 August 2009 (UTC))

I assume you are referring to the deletion of Mike Marshall from the Notable natives and residents section of the Yuma, Arizona article. One cannot verify that Marshall lives in Yuma because there is no citation on the Mike Marshall (outfielder) article or on the Yuma, Arizona article. Please provide a reference. Alanraywiki (talk) 13:53, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for your work with Tulane University. I can be a real stickler when it comes to verifiability. I'd love to hear your thoughts over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#Help With Definition of "Established" Date since I consider you to be a more experienced editor than myself. I suppose it's possible that I've made an error in judgement there and would love to know if you think that's the case, as well. Cheers! --inquietudeofcharacter (talk) 23:16, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

California State University, San Bernardino

Hi Alanraywiki; Thank you for reversing my category change. I never knew there was a Cal State SB campus in Palm Desert. I should have read the article before I made the change. Now that I know, I do think that a better category would be "Education in Riverside County, California", which is a sub-category of "Riverside County, California". Before I make another mistake, what do you think? Thanks. MissionInn.Jim (talk) 02:40, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

That sounds like an even better category. I agree with you. Regards, Alanraywiki (talk) 02:59, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thanks for taking care of the vandalism on the Purdue University article, I noticed it today! Kevinmon (talk) 21:40, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Glad to help. Best, Alanraywiki (talk) 21:43, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

SoCal

How about I change it to ...the population centers around 3 major metropolitan areas, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, and the San Diego Metropolitan Area. Since the 3 metros are in the top 15 in the nation (at least the IE and LA are), better than naming every specific city, like Santa Ana when it usually falls under LA a one city metro. House1090 (talk) 23:06, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if those are the right groups, but using regions instead of cities in Southern California may be more appropriate since the cities tend to blend together. Maybe you can start with that and see what other editors do with it. Alanraywiki (talk) 23:11, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Ok that sounds great, I will start with the 3 major metros. and we will see were it leads to. House1090 (talk) 21:42, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
