Technical news

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

Any reason you left the green lock in place? I don't see any controversy over the title at this point (there wasn't really any substantial controversy before; just one disruptive editor). The fact that you were willing to move it per request, without calling for a discussion to achieve consensus seems to serve as prima facie evidence that there are no issues. I've no issue waiting for a consensus. I feel badly that his revert is the one we leave in place without discussion until it is arrived. It is inaccurate and he is using a personal bias to put forth his agenda. weams (talk) 21:04, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

  • A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.
  • A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Wikipedia, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
  • Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

Chip and Pepper

Hello,

I spent a couple of hours fixing and making the chip and pepper page current. It was highly outdated and did not include current articles or links to the brand. I did not use the page to promote the brand only changing errors and connecting current articles and accurate and current information. I received an email linking me to a list with your name asking me to reach out to you with questions and have you add back what was deleted.

Can you please explain why the contribution was deleted and if you need any further information from me in order to put it back to its accurate state?

I'm the CEO of the company managing all copyrights and trademarks of Chip and Pepper.

Hi Sara. I poked around some and it looks like this is the edit you made that was deleted. Is that correct? If so, unfortunately there are a couple of problems with that edit. First, the tone is way too promotional. Second, Wikipedia style is not to not link back to the article subject's website in the body text itself; those links should be either in the references section if they're supporting something in the article, or in the external links section if it's simply a link to the official website.
Wikipedia can be very complicated and frustrating to edit; your best bet is to read the links provided on your talk page to get a better feel for what type of edits are likely to be kept and what are likely to be discarded. Once you're a little bit more familiar, consider putting your suggestions for improvements to the Chip and Pepper page on its talk page here: Talk:Chip and Pepper. Just like you we want the article to be accurate and not have outdated information, but we also have to make sure that the article is neutral in tone and doesn't read like an advertisement. I would offer some more help, but I'm going to be traveling soon, so if you have any questions, you may want to ask User:Uncle Milty, who left the helpful links on your talk page. Referencing a now deleted "Tweet"

Hello there,

I was hoping you could advise me on the best course of action that I should take regarding the following matter. I wish to reference a now deleted "Tweet" (aka. a message sent using Twitter) that was posted by a well-known local personality in the United Kingdom. The message was posted following the death of a now disgraced British celebrity in 2011, and I would like to make reference to the Tweet within this person's Wikipedia page. Whilst I am unable to find a URL for the Tweet in question, I did manage to capture it using screen capture software before it was deleted. I was wondering, therefore, whether I could reference this Tweet if I were to upload the image to Wikipedia and reference it accordingly? The only issue is that I do not have the URL for it.

If the deleted tweet was reprinted or referenced in the news media, citing that article would be the way to go. If it's not been referenced by the news media (or another reliable source), I don't think you'll be able to include it, screenshot or not. 28bytes (talk) 20:23, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

As long as you are careful about following the WP:BLP policy, you should be able to bring it up on the article's talk page for discussion. You could also start a discussion on WP:RS/N to get a broader audience. If you think it might be a BLP violation to quote from the deleted tweet, emailing an admin who's recently edited that article (or a similar one) would be another option. 28bytes (talk) 22:15, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

  • You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
  • In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

  • Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.

@28bytes: Hi, I was wondering if you'd be able to help with some guidance and clear explanation of rules regarding what can or cannot be used as sources. I am currently working on this article about an American news organization called PopWrapped. Here is the edit in question: [2] I tried to reach out to the editor who made the change in a polite way, even though there seemed to be a position of bad faith placed upon myself and the article. In short, the editor removed the entire section that contained examples of news coverage, stating that it was just an excuse to get more references and link to the website (which I thought was necessary in order to accurately prove what was being written in the article. I stated to the editor that before I started the article, I looked at articles that covered similar sites. I loosely created this draft based upon TMZ, a similar entertainment and celebrity news website. TMZ also contains a "notable coverage" section with links to their website and to other outside sources, in the same fashion. The editor seemed to think that I was attempting to add links to articles to increase SEO, but frankly, I don't even know how to do that. All I wanted to do was to make sure that everything was accurate and well-sourced. So, if TMZ has this section AND the links as references, wouldn't it make sense that this site should be able to do the same? If one is allowed, then others should be to. Alternatively, if this is incorrect, or rules have changed, shouldn't that section in the TMZ article, and all other articles that contain the same kind of sourcing also be deleted from their articles? As I said, I have tried to reach out to the editor, to no avail. Can you help shed light on this, please? I only wish to make sure everything is clear before moving this article. Thank you. Hello, 28bytes. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

Hi

I am looking to avoid an edit war with User talk:Wikiinger so I thought best to contact yourself, an admin who has computing experience. He has insisted on putting the categories column on the right, I have left a message on the talk page which he did not engage in and on his talk page with no reply. Now before anyone goes to war on which colored hat to wear (Red Dwarf reference:Cloister).. I thought it best as I said to contact your-good-self.

The user is actually doing some good work on the tables.. but both the messy categories and the lop sided page[1] format are disorentating to say the least. Wikipedia has a 'flow' and whomever it was first chose the Wikipedia page format, it has endured for all these years.

Can I fix the format and sort the categories without fear of repercussions?

I await your judgement.

Hi Dave. I agree, the table of contents does look strange on the right. I can't recall another time I've seen it anywhere other than on the left. You did the right thing by starting a conversation on the talk page. Hopefully other people will participate in the discussion and you can reach an agreement.   • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

Technical news

  • A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.

we spoke before about the AMD graphics page and user Wikiinger. Another editor suggested edits and I agreed. Wikiinger had two months to respond but chose not to. He has now undid my edits and spoken to me rudely on the talk page. It is CLEAR he thinks this page belongs to him and not Wikipedia, please intervene that so he realizes again he is an editor and not 'God of that page'.
