[edit]People born and dying in the period of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland are British-Irish. There is no need for a source other then wikipdeia itself. To calim he was Irish is misleading it is not unnessary.
- There is always a need for a source. We describe subjects in the way they are described in sources. If the preponderance of reliable sources say someone is Irish, we call them Irish - our own views on whether that is correct or not aren't relevant. Find sources and attempt to gain consensus, or walk away - what you are doing now will just get your IP address blocked for disruption. GirthSummit (blether) 15:31, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

. at William Rowan Hamilton per a complaint at WP:AN3. EdJohnston (talk) 15:30, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
yOU ARE SIMPLY WRONG FELLA. People born in that state at that time had that nationality. See the British nationality act. The fact that a source uses an inprecise term is of no relevence. You have not supplied sources as to his nationality. I will simply get another IP address and continue to change this.
- If you do that, the article will be protected so that IP addresses and new accounts can't edit it. Your argument above simply isn't how we operate - our mission is not to reflect the 'truth', it is to reflect what reliable sources say. If they call him Irish, then so do we; if they called him Zimbabwean, so would we, even if we were flat-out certain that they were wrong. If you don't like that approach, there are plenty of other things you can be doing than editing Wikipedia. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 15:43, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- As a non-involved editor with no particular dog in this fight, I have to say that I'm perplexed by your insistence, IP editor. As Hamilton's birth and death dates should make clear, there is no reasonable basis for insisting on changing his birthplace to "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". That polity would not exist for another 57 years. Even leaving the (not inconsiderable) difference between The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" and .."and Northern Ireland" aside, As Girth Summit states, our own personal appreciation of what is right and what is wrong is not a good basis for making changes. The Core Content Policies that have been adopted here should explain why. I hope this helps upon your return. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 18:43, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
Arront rubbish! The edit said Great Britain and Ireland, Northern was not mentioned. This is accurate. Check your facts before posting such non-sense. I made no mention of Northern Ireland, you really are an annoying lot and you do and should not wown this entry
- Do you know how to review your own contributions? If so, please do so - your edits, both to the Edit Warring Noticeboard and to the article itself, do actually mention Northern Island. If you don't know how to check, I can provide links to the edits themselves if you like - they are permanently recorded, anyone can view them.
- Not that any of that is particularly important - the main issue is how we should describe the subject's nationality. This is something that comes up quite often about people whose nationality could potentially be contested: we always defer to the sources. I genuinely have no view in this particular case, I had never heard of the subject before today - I was just patrolling recent changes and saw your unexplained change. If you feel strongly about this, find some reliable sources that describe him as British/Irish, link to them from the article's talk page, and I'll happily consider supporting a change to the article. This is a collaborative project, your views and input are welcome, but changes must meet with consensus. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 00:47, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
