"Extremely obvious"

None of the points you listed qualify as "obvious", let alone "extremely obvious", but instead require substantial working knowledge of Wikipedia or other obscure-to-most-people things (e.g., how to use WHOIS and how to interpret what it tells you). I was tempted to say that, indeed, no experienced Wikipedia editor would ever fall for such a scam (but that's only a few thousands of people in the world), but then I remembered this. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 13:57, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's "extremely obvious" in the sense that it's clearly a version of a standard tech support scam, and anyone with common sense on the internet should have seen what it was a mile away.

I mean things like the email coming from "thewikipedians.com", the "admin account" they were told to look at not being an admin and having a big banner saying "This person has been missing since 2019" are all blindingly obvious. There's also things like "Mr cooper" not being able to spell his own name (it's repeatedly written as copper in the email) and the poor quality of English.

The person reporting it on reddit also isn't a newbie to wikipedia, they were an editor here who was blocked for writing spam articles and who now runs a subreddit where they post increasingly ridiculous conspiracy theories about how all our admins engage in UPE and block people to cover it up, just look at the history of posts in that subreddit. 192.76.8.82 (talk) 14:15, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And all I'm saying is that it's not "clearly" a scam to a typical person whose only experience with Wikipedia is as a reader. If you received an email claiming to be from "Bill Gates" coming from "microsofthelpsupportdesk.com" claiming that "something is wrong with your service host dll and it is is stopping a process" and asking you to let them help fix it you should be able to see that it's a scam without any knowledge of what a service host is, what a dll is, what a process is or even who Bill Gates is.

It should be common sense on the internet that if someone sends you an unsolicited email offering to "fix" something for you that it is a scam. 192.76.8.82 (talk) 14:46, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
