Category:Types of restaurants

I'm wondering about this rev and this rev. You might know more about categorization best practices than I do. However, I would have thought it better to keep separate articles about particular restaurants (Category:Restaurants by type) from articles about types of restaurants (Category:Types of restaurants). Can you explain your thinking on this category merge? Daask (talk) 22:56, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Daask: I'm not sure what you're trying to explain, but I realized that the two categories had exactly the same information in each; some articles even had both categories. One's a rewording of the other; there's no distinct difference in their titles, and there was no reason for their separation; I even consulted another user on this matter. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 00:32, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Discretionary sanctions

Hi, MJ! I know you are a longtime editor here, and maybe you already know that the Donald Trump article is under WP:Discretionary sanctions. I see that you have already been given the standard notice about DS. I wanted to caution you, because you were violating those sanctions when you restored your edit to the lede after someone had challenged it. If new material like yours is challenged, it must not be restored to the article until consensus to include it has been reached on the talk page. Furthermore, at that article in particular, any additions or changes to the lede are supposed to be discussed first. I have reverted your second addition; feel free to start a discussion about it on the talk page. If you have any questions just ask me. --MelanieN (talk) 23:10, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

@MelanieN: I was figuring there was probably some sort of 1RR, though I've just recently started using the 2017 editor and no warnings came up about sanctions. I'm sick today and won't have the energy to fight for consensus. Perhaps later on, or someone else hopefully will see merit in the edit. Thanks, ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 23:40, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:15, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Just so you are aware, "Local consensus" isn't a thing. You can't revert a change for that reason. Category:Geobox usage tracking for settlement type & Template:Geobox/type/settlement&redirect=no both indicate that this template is deprecated. If you have an objection you are welcome to discuss it but this has long been a deprecated template. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:07, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2018 November 3#Template:Geobox where User:Zackmann08 is proposing that the Geobox template be merged. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 15:20, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm at work, but will quickly say that that's the biggest farce of a vote that I've ever seen. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:52, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
@: I'm sorry you don't like the result, but as I said, this debate was settled a LONG time ago. The only reason I even bothered to file a TFD was because you raised such a big thing about it. The fact that it was speedily closed should give you all the information you need. Also, still waiting on your response to what the issues are... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:00, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Listen. We're going ahead with the conversions, but don't put any prominence to your insanely silly vote there, done in the course of under half a day, without notifying any wikiprojects, writers of city articles, or even me, and literally nobody even commented any pros or cons, only stuff like "It is God's will.", followed by Andy closing the discussion as pointless, because it's already deprecated and merged. So... ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 04:24, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
That is because this discussion was had years ago and you are the only one raising such a big stink over it!!! OMG dude. Get over it! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:12, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
That makes no sense, but this isn't something to be mad about. The template has needed those parameters for years; that's why I chose to use the geobox in the first place. Perhaps once they're added, other wiki editors will be glad to use them for articles they follow. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 18:30, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
All other articles already use the template.... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:52, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I know, because you and your other template editors already converted almost all the rest. But I was saying that other editors will likely make good use of the params and formatting we are going to add to the infobox template. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 18:58, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

yes... Me and my minions converted 480,000 pages overnight. You caught me. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:04, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

MTA MNRR

Just so you know, the Empire Corridor is a designation given by the Federal Railroad Administration. Being a part of the same corridor, it is served by the MTA and Amtrak combined. It has long been established (and recently enforced) that the |line= parameter is for physical track, the |service= parameter is for the service lines used in revenue service: i.e. Adirondack, Empire Service, Ethan Allen Express, Hudson Line, Maple Leaf, Lake Shore Limited. Kinda like how this 96th Street station is served by the 1, 2, and 3 trains, but it's on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line of physical track. Cards84664 (talk) 17:43, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

@Cards84664: Make a parameter called "corridor" then. Because the parameter says "line", and thus it makes perfect sense that it's served by the Hudson Line. That's what the parameter is there for, to link the line that the station is servicing. The detail of Empire Corridor is less relevant, and should be either under a corridor parameter, or displayed in the line parameter, under Hudson Line. TLDR- your rationale is logical, but it is not serving the parameter's purpose, nor serving the readers in what is most relevant here. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:14, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
I'd like to rename the parameter so it's less confusing for editors, but that will take a while. I'll need consensus to consider changing that for tens of thousands of articles. @Epicgenius: @Morphenniel: @Jc86035: @Mackensen: @Mitchazenia: @Frietjes: Cards84664 (talk) 19:31, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Cards84664, which template for which article? Frietjes (talk) 19:42, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Frietjes The "line" parameter for Template:Infobox station. It's being confused with "services". Cards84664 (talk) 19:44, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Cards84664, I would suggest starting a thread at Template talk:Infobox station since it is unlikely any changes will be made to that template with discussion on its talk page. Frietjes (talk) 19:50, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

What action to take re Infobox river / Geobox river Tfd/merge

Really would like your insights at User talk:Qui1che#Gauge interest in pursuing dispute resolution re the Geobox river / Infobox River Tfd and merge process. --papageno (talk) 00:41, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Plea....

I implore you, can we work together this time? I really don't care who was "to blame" for the last time around. Call it 50/50. I don't care... I just don't want to go down that road again. Was way too frustrating. If you want to join in the river process, we can always use another set of eyes and I'd love your insight. (The following is a compliment). You are one of those editors who can be super picky about things. Sometimes that can be annoying as hell. Other times, like now, it is super helpful because you pick up on things that others completely overlook. I think having your eyes on this project would be super helpful!

There are a number of discussions going on at Template talk:Infobox river. I for one would welcome your insight. If possible, please avoid reverting unless it is absolutely necessary. For example, with Hudson River. It looks like I dropped a discharge rate in the conversion? In the future, if you don't mind just dropping me a comment saying "hey when you converted <some page> you deleted <some value>. I'm pretty responsive on here. So if it is a small issue of a value or two being removed, drop me a line and give me a chance to fix it before you revert it, if that is ok with you? Obviously if I completely wreck the page (which has happened) that is totally different. Just trying to find a middle ground. Also trying to avoid the scenario where I convert a page, you revert it because I deleted 2 values. I convert it again fixing 1 of them but missing the 2nd, you revert it again because I'm still missing a value and boom we are in an edit war... If it is just a few values, let me know and I'll get right on them! :-)

You will see on the talk page that a couple of users have raised concerns. So far we've been having a really constructive conversation and I would welcome your thoughts and insight on the process. Finally, for what it is worth, I'm sorry for how much you and I butted heads in the past. Call it different personalities, call it whatever you want... But here's hoping we can move forward and work together. :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:21, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I really appreciate your efforts to work together and I acted too quickly; I'll work to improve this conversion and the river infobox in general. Will write more when home again. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 20:31, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
Noting that I -am- happy with the conversions of Maritje Kill and Pocantico River, two other river articles I wrote/watch. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 14:58, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Yey!!! Please continue to provide any feedback you may have, both positive and room for improvement. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:10, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Hey Ɱ, thanks for your edits to the Grand Central Terminal article. Just one question, though: what do you mean by this edit summary for converting all the references to list-defined format? Are you planning to expand the article?

If so, I could help. I was planning to rewrite the article early next year, similar to the style of Pennsylvania Station (1910–1963). There's a lot of sources about Grand Central that need to be added, as it needs quite a few improvements. Especially in the long term, where it might be able to achieve good article status with an immense cleanup. epicgenius (talk) 21:56, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi again Epicgenius - yeah I'd love to see this regain its GA status, that's the immediate goal. I've started with image swaps, crops, and formats. We should work on the content too, and I think PointsofNoReturn expressed interest too; he's worked with me on a few similar articles. I'm going back to the city in January, and will hope to take quality images of the many, many lacking spots. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 22:02, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll gather some sources, hopefully when the Christmas holiday comes. I think GA status would be a good goal. epicgenius (talk) 22:11, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

New Skylab controversy RfC proposal

Hi! I have drafted another RfC at Talk:Skylab_controversy#New_RfC_proposal. Please comment on how best to get appropriate input from the Wikipedia editor community. -- ke4roh (talk) 14:44, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

We are talking about living and serving military staff here. WP:BLP applies in full force and leaving up claims which might prove libellous is not acceptable. We should remove all perjorative terms such as "strike" ASAP and, if need be, have an AfC discussion about that and reinstate them afterwards. Do you disagree strongly enough to restore them a second time? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 16:03, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

You claim in [your subsequent edit comment] that "There is no policy to not offend war soldiers if RSs are in dispute... Few barely even served and that's not at all the point or focus here. Irrelevant completely." WP:BLP is clear that "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion" (bold as policy). As far as I can tell, it is your edit comment which is "irrelevant completely". Can you please explain to me how your restoration of contentious material does not violate BLP policy? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 16:27, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
It's not unsourced or poorly sourced. This is a content dispute and it requires consensus. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 16:29, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Your assertion is incorrect. The matter of sourcing is currently the subject of this RfC proposal. See also this discussion on the reliability of the sources cited. BLP is a full-blown policy which overrides the usual rules and emphasises in bold that the material should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion, we do NOT wait for consensus as you suggest. You also invoke WP:BRD. Please note that you have now reverted Oshwah's and my edits twice. I should caution you that if you do so for a third time, sanctions may be taken against you. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 16:45, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Or sanctions may be taken against you. The argument that the strike happened is not poorly sourced; there's no arguing about that. There are dozens and dozens of traditionally reputable sources; the most reputable, like NYT, BBC, Smithsonian... RSs may be in question, but BLP only concerns that which is "unsourced or poorly sourced", you said so yourself. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 16:48, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Why the spacing

Please see WP:ACCESSIBILITY - easier to read and edit for everyone. It's to be expected that editors (like myself) and readers all do not have perfect vision. Additionally, I've been working on clearing out the backlog at Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting, and over 90% of the cite errors that get listed in that category are at articles that use a list-defined reference format. In articles that have a substantial amount of references, like Grand Central Terminal has, it appears to be the standard practice to have them spaced like that to make it easier to read and edit for everyone. But I'm certainly not going to edit-war over it, have it your way. Isaidnoway (talk) 17:55, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Mobile editing

I see that you've used the visual editor on the mobile site. Would you mind going to mw:Visual-based mobile editing/Ideas/October 2018 and leaving your thoughts about how well it is (or, more probably, isn't) working for you? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:13, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Edit Request: Please remove the “is written like a resume” notation from John Langloth Loeb Jr. page

Hi Mj -

I'm writing about John Langloth Loeb Jr's Wikipedi page at: [[1]] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Langeloth_Loeb_Jr.

On November 8, 2016 (Revision as of 13:01, 8 November 2016) you made some updates to this page, including adding the "Like a Resume" notice.

I'd like your advice and help on the updates to the page that are necessary so that we can have you remove the "Like a Resume" notice.

In our conversation on your Talk page you suggested I email you at your gmail.com account as a next step. I had written you back in April, 2018 and had not heard back from you yet, so I'm checking with you here. Please let me know if you'd like to communicate through another means.

There have been many updates to John Langloth Loeb Jr.'s Wikipedia page, per suggestions and help from the volunteer Wikipedia editors, so that this page won’t read like a resume. I have compared this article to other living people that do not have the “is written like a resume” notation, such as:

Nicholas Pritzker: [[2]] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_J._Pritzker

David Koch: [[3]] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Koch

and the structure of the John L. Loeb, Jr. page seems very similar.

Please let me know if any other updates need to be made to have you remove the “is written like a resume” notation and I will move forward with requesting those updates. Else, if the page is in the correct format, as-is, please remove the “is written like a resume” notation.

I'm also happy to connect with you through a Google Hangout if you'd like. Just let me know.

I'm on the West Coast USA (PDT time zone)

Thanks in advance for your help with this!

Washington

The map image is simply redundant when the interactive map shows the same information. Also, nowhere was it displayed clearly where the city is in the US. IWI (chat) 14:51, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Grand Central

Yeah, go ahead, I hadn't realized we had the history article. But I think it should still be noted that the MTA had the limited-time window to make this purchase; otherwise it would have had to wait until sometime after the USS Enterprise's first mission. Daniel Case (talk) 06:20, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Good point, and yeah Epicgenius and I just recently created that history article! ɱ (talk) 06:33, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Image galleries on New York (state)

Hi there, I wanted to give you a heads up that we have an ongoing discussion at Talk:New York (state) about the article's image galleries. I saw that you brought this up back in November 2016, and wondered if you had any insight or experience from that process that you could bring to the new discussion. For example, I saw that you suggested an RfC back then, which has also come up again.-- Patrick, oѺ 19:53, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
