Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, תנא קמא, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Yosef Greenwald, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may not be retained.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Teahouse, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{help me}} on this page, followed by your question, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! ___CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 19:25, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Careful with the revert button

[edit]

Howdie - first of all - welcome. It can be daunting to create your first article, and going through a baptism (or brit' as the case may be) of fire via an AfD.... Is challenging. However, what I wanted to caution you about is reverting - please read WP:3RR specifically and Wikipedia:Edit warring more broadly. Wikipedia is a collaborative project, and once other editors have challenged you then you should discuss things on the relevant talk page, in this case - Talk:Mordechai Hager. Icewhiz, Thank You!

If you're interested in trying solve puzzles of this sort, I posted a list at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism#Links to DAB pages a month ago. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 17:53, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Narky Blert, I will look into it. Thanks.--תנא קמא (talk) 17:59, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Narky Blert, the list is almost nulled! You have to update... Cheers and Laila Tov --תנא קמא (talk) 19:52, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Great (and quick) work! I know I've collected a few more such bad links since, but I'll give it a bit longer before I check my bookmarks and ask for help again.
When I signed up to WP:DPL, WP:TDD reported over 40,000 bad links (down from the original million-plus). Once the team had got the number down into four figures, I decided that it would be a good time to start collecting links and to ask the experts in various WikiProjects. On the whole, the responses have demonstrated the collaborative nature of WP at its best.
If you think that an ambiguous link will never be soluble, the best thing to do may be to add a WP:NPOV footnote explaining the problem. I have a fair amount of experience in doing that, and would be happy to make such an edit myself. Example: birthplaces in pre-war central Europe, where records will no longer exist :-(
On an entirely separate topic: if it is not too late, could I ask you say kaddish for Martin Hoffman? One of my articles: not only a very great bridge player, but a truly nice man, respected by me and by everyone. The guy I would have asked (known only through the Internet) is, I fear, no longer with us. Yrs, Narky Blert (talk) 20:55, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your user name

[edit]

Please see Wikipedia:Username policy#Usernames with non-Latin characters. Please keep in mind that non-Latin user name creates A LOT of problems to users who cannot read or type it, e.g., when they want to mention you in a discussion. Therefore if you do not want for goyim to communicate with you comfortably, nobody can forbid you using this name. Staszek Lem (talk) 22:27, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A few suggestions:
  1. When creating articles (also when you translate/work from hewiki and yiwiki) - make sure you have 2 strong references - your creations are going up to AfD because of this.
  2. If there is an entry in another wiki - interwiki to it - it is quite easy - click on "add links" umder languages on the sidebar to the left.
  3. Add English to your sig - e.g. a "Tanna Kamma".
Regards.Icewhiz (talk) 03:47, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As for the sig I'm not quite sure how you do it (though it is written in Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing your signature), but @יניב הורון: - recently changed his sig to include Yaniv in parenthesis, which made life easier for everyone who can't read Hebrew characters - and he might be able to help. Icewhiz (talk) 06:14, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is another minor, but convenient thing of communication: if you type @Staszek Lem: or user:Staszek Lem I am getting a notification. Whwereas to notify תנא קמא I have to find where his name is typed and cut and paste from there. Since I see no difference between תנא קמא and קנא קמא, the safest way is to go to the user page and copy from page name. Of course the same problem is with some some smartasses with extremely obfuscated signatures, but usually seeing this kind signature I simply don't want to waste time talking to this person (unless I already know them). :-( Staszek Lem (talk) 19:10, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is nothing wrong with having a non-Latin username. We have a steward with an Arabic script username, and CUs on other projects with Hebrew, Japanese, Sanskrit, and Arabic script usernames. Because of SUL this is unavoidable and isn’t a bad thing.

Hi

[edit]

Hi, I would like to encourage you to read all the Wikipedia pages in the formal welcome template (which you don't seem to have received, so I'll re-post below), because your articles being nominated at WP:AFD show an unfamiliarity with Wikipedia guidelines. For Mordechai Hager, it makes no sense to list all the sources under External links and expect other editors to create your article for you. Your !vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Maalos also shows unfamiliarity with Wikipedia guidelines. If I can be of help with anything, please drop me a line on my talk page. It is absolutely essential that you provide sources, as soon as you enter an article in mainspace. If you aren to eyt ready to do so, write in Draft until you have them available. As you know, any language will do, but there must be sources. DGG ( talk ) 09:46, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I second DGG's comments on sources and would like to point out that if this is a translation from hewiki or yiwiki then you should add Template:Translated page to the article talk page. Icewhiz (talk) 09:54, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
DGG and Icewhiz, I added some sources. You may want to review it. Thank you. תנא קמא (talk) 13:50, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think there are English sources available also, and it would be better to add at least some of them. And the text contains large mounts of unsourced material discussing his holy life, in a way that would not really meet WP:NPOV even if sourced. DGG ( talk ) 23:59, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
TanaKama - I added a translated box to the talk page based on the version I think this is translated from (considering the section headings are the same, the paragraphs are the same, ordering of the descendants the same, and the text I spot checked being the same - I'm fairly sure it is translated) - it is important to do this - as Wikipedia:Copyrights is a serious thing on-wiki (and full of rules and regulations - can be a bit unwieldy to read it all). I will however summarize three points of advice -
  1. Translation from another wiki is Kosher - but you need to specify what you translated and from where (preferably both in the edit summary, and in the translation box,[1] on the talk page).
  2. Copying within Wikipedia is Kosher - but you have to attribute - the easiest way to do this is in the edit summary - e.g. "text copied from Joe Shmoe").
  3. Copying from outside of Wikipedia is usually (with some exceptions of non-copyrighted stuff or a license like Wikipedia - in which case (2) applies) - NOT OK (treif) (and can lead one to become muktzeh) - no copy-pasting stuff - unless it is short quotes, quotation marks (""), and clearly attributed. Longer stuff has to be paraphrased - and you need to be wary of Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing which is also to be avoided (usually - the best thing is to read something, and then summarize it without looking at it).

An article you recently created, Levi Yitzchok Greenwald, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. With regards to your inappropriate revert at Agudat Yisrael, please familiarise yourself with WP:ENGVAR. You should not change one use of English for another without a good reason. The two main reasons are (1) strong national ties to a topic; in the case of Agudat Yisrael, it was a party that existed during the British Mandate, so arguably has more links to the UK; and (2) the original form of English used in the article, which again in this case was British English (note the spelling of "Labour" in this very early version). Kvod Harav @Debresser: They were an improvement, but not perfect. Thanks for your improvements. and about the:
Famous independent Mashpi'im are Rabbi Moshe Wolfson, Rabbi Tzvi Meir Silberberg, Rabbi Mordechai Menashe Zilber and Rabbi Binyamin Eisenberger. Famous Mashpi'im belonging to a court are Rabbi Elimelech Biderman (brother of Rabbi David of Lelov of the United States), Rabbi Yitzchak Moshe Erlanger (Rachmastrivka Hasid) and Rabbi Aharon Toisig (Vizhnitz Chassid, grandson of Rabbi Yisrael Toisig).
Most of them are actually very notable, maybe not so much between the English-speaking community. They all have articles in the Hebrew wikipedia. Rabbis Moshe Wolfson and Elimelech Biderman previously had articles that were deleted. Thanks again. --תנא קמא (talk) 18:41, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding "Rabbi" as the first word in biographies

[edit]

Please stop adding "Rabbi" as the first word in various biographies; this contradicts MOS:BIO and MOS:CREDENTIAL. It's particularly inappropriate to add the words just after I've removed them, and after you've been told this in the past. I don't want to have to take this to the administrative boards, but if you keep defying the Manual Of Style, it will become a problem that I can't ignore. Jayjg (talk) 15:34, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jayjg: Sorry but I can't reach those 2 pages you referred, cuz it's blocked by my filter claiming it has improper content. I remember someone citing from these page that if somebody is only called together with his title than you may write the title. Its weird to say "Elimelech of Lieznsk" as he is only called "Reb Elimelech" or "the Rebbe Reb Elimelech". תנא קמא (talk) 17:51, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikipedia:Manual of Style is pretty important, and should be followed. Please try to figure out a way of reading those pages before editing, and certainly before reverting someone who is following it. While it may seem strange to you to see "Elimelech", rather than "the Rebbe Reb Eilimelch", Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and that's the way things are written in encyclopedias: see, for example Elimelech Of Lizhensk at Encyclopaedia Britannica. Bobov-45

[edit]

Why did you merge Bobov-45 into Bobov (Hasidic dynasty)? DGtal (talk) 06:02, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DGtal: Bobov is a dynasty that originated from Bobowa in Galicia. After the late Rebbe passed the dynasty split in two. If you make a separate article on bobov-45 it's just confusing. BTW, look at the Hebrew and Yiddish articles. They also don't have separate articles. I hope you understand. תנא קמא (talk) 06:23, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In Hebrewiki there was a proper discussion before merging the articles (he:שיחה:חסידות באבוב 45) which didn't end in clear agreement. I think the dynasties are distinct enough (certainly at the legal level) to merit seperate articles or at the least a proper discussion, not a speedy merger without even a proper edit summary. DGtal (talk) 06:32, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
DGtal, agreed that Tana Kama should have taken it to the talk page first, he is relatively new here like we all once were, but he did a WP:BOLD (within policy) and correct move IMO, since these 2 entities share a common name and origin, and anyway there isn't enough content in Bobov-45 to make Bobov (Hasidic dynasty) unwieldy and unreadable. Having its own article was teetering on WP:NPOVFACT. I made sure to redirect it into it's own neat little heading in the target article that Tana Kama arranged for. Premishlan (Hasidic dynasty)

[edit]

Hi. I reverted your change to the article here as good faith, but unsourced. I also noted that the change to the section title seems on the WP:UNDUE side, but I'm more than happy to discuss whether it's appropriate on the article's talk page. Ultimately, I think that this is heavily dependent on the existence of reliably sourced content and common usage of the descriptor for this phase in its existence. Truth or not, WP:NPOV and WP:NOR demand that we don't create unencyclopaedic emphasis to sway the reader, but do feel free to engage further on that talk page. Thanks! Bobov Synagogue, Krakow

[edit]

Tana Kama, the page move from Bobov Synagogue, Kraków to Hasidic Judaism in Kraków looks to me a bit too controversial to do all on your own, because the article was supposed to be about one building. Did I miss a talk page discussion somewhere? I believe it boils down to a protocol or style question. I see what you were trying to do, and you even added some references to a page that had none before (one of them doesn't load properly). We have Hasidic Judaism in the United States, but not Hasidic Judaism in Europe for some reason, but I haven't seen Hasidic Judaism in Random City before. I realize that adding the content you wanted into the Kraków article might not be possible, but at the very least this should have been a talk page discussion so that editors such as Jayjg who have edited there before could be consulted. StonyBrook (talk) 03:11, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@StonyBrook: It's hard for me to make discussions on talk pages. Rather I do WP:BOLD actions which is accepted. I saw this short article without source, and found another few very short articles (that would otherwise been deleted, and fairly) about hasidic Judaism in Krakow, like David Elimelech Tzanger and HE:אלימלך הורוביץ concerning hasidic jewry in Krakow, so I kind of boiled them together (My mistake for not mentioning in summary thet its merged from above articles. Forgot). Krakow was a big Hasidic city prewar with a hundreds of hasidic shtiebels. Maybe we should rename it for Hasidic Judaism in Europe? or Poland? your decision. Thank you for your understanding. תנא קמא (talk) 04:31, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tana Kama, the whole point of WP is collaboration with others. If you aren't prepared to engage in discussion that's fine, but you would need to take a step back from making bold and controversial moves or merges like this one and stick to more gnomish work, especially if you want to hang around here for the long term without ticking people off. You have a knowledge base that is clearly valuable for improving things in the Hasidic Judaism department, and it would be a shame for WP to lose out. Creating a brand new article or adding to an existing one when the material satisfies WP:GNG, WP:V and has WP:RS is great, but at issue now is the Bobov synagogue article, which either needs to be improved with more synagogue details, or deleted, or merged, with the last two options reserved for discussions and/or WP:AFD. The article was, I believe, wrongly 'deleted' without a discussion, so we would need to get that horse back in the stable first before we figure out how to add the newer content. StonyBrook (talk) 06:53, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@StonyBrook: thanks for bringing this up. I've divided the article into two, Bobov Synagogue (Kraków) about the synagogue, and Hasidic Judaism in Kraków, about Hasidic Judaism in Krakow. I've also cleaned up all of the broken redirects, talk pages, etc.; if I've missed any please let me know (of feel free to clean up yourself). Jayjg (talk) 16:00, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Ratzfert (Hasidic dynasty), a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:43, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi תנא קמא, is there anything you can please do to clean up all the blatant inaccuracies in this abomination: Superstition in Judaism. Thanks so much, IZAK (talk) 23:05, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@תנא קמא: Night and day! Take a look at the article, and the wonders of User:Ar2332 and User:Ibn Daud edits! IZAK (talk) 22:12, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, any chance you would want to take on The Exodus article by fixing it up from a Jewish scholarly perspective, especially correcting the sheer nonsense in The Exodus#Origins and historicity section? Thanks again, IZAK (talk) 01:44, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, are you able to translate this: [5] Thank you, IZAK (talk) 21:50, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Dirshu

[edit]

Hello, אונגארישער. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Dirshu".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! —Nnadigoodluck🇳🇬 02:09, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I highly recommend reading the article "My Hasidic Family Got Into a Passover Fistfight — Over Cake"

especially since it discusses ingreat detail his family and how he started thinking about yeshivot in the first place.

i'd like for the info from that article to be incorporated into the Wikipedia page.
