Hi Ratzd'mishukribo, thanks for that Shotzer info. Many I ask what exactly the Shotzer Rebbe's son is doing in Thailand - I know Chabad operate there and there are many young (secular) Israeli hikers, but there isn't much in the way of Yiddishkeit, and certainly not too many Chassidim around those parts. Many thanks, Nesher 15:19, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Baal Shem Tov family tree and R' Baruch
[edit]You wrote - "many of his generation disagreed, especially the Tanya and the Chozeh - whose direct spiritual descendants, as I'm sure you know, include almost all Chasidim today"
I don't agree. The fact that people in his generation disagreed with him doesn't make it a fact that he wasn't the heir. It might have been different if he was older, like the Magid of Mezritch, when the Besht died. And, there is the clear statement in Mekor Boruch from two kedoshim who were closest to the Besht and closer than the Tanya or the Chozeh, both of whom had their own agendas.
Of course many in that generation disagreed - everyone wanted to be the closest to the Besht and Boruch was the only flesh and blood of the Besht standing in the way, and he was young, and his personality of course didn't help, but none of that means that he wasn't the spiritual heir or that the Besht didn't leave it to him.
That was the whole fight between Baruch and the Tanya - the Tanya wanted to be the heir and said so - but that doesn't make it so, and especially when Baruch lived with his grandfather and Tanya didn't
I think you have to either take out that the Besht didn't leave spiritual heirs or else be clearer about Baruch's claim and the statements in Mekor Boruch in the article and not just footnote. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChosidFrumBirth (talk • contribs) 10:46, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Baal Shem Tov birth place
[edit]Hi Aleksander! I noticed that you changed the name of the Baal Shem Tov's birth place from "Okopy" to "Okopy Świętej Trójcy". While this is one of the historic names of Okopy, I'm not sure why you feel this is the appropriate name for the article - it is neither the modern name, nor the name used in Jewish sources to refer to it (especially since "Okopy Świętej Trójcy" means "Okopy of the Holy Trinity" - not a name likely to be used by the local Jews). Can you please explain your rationale for the change? Ratzd'mishukribo (talk) 16:24, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- Okopy were established soon (six years) before the birth of Baal Shem Tov as a border fortress near Kamianets which at that time was the administrative center of the Ottoman Podolia (Podolia Eyelet). The settlement was renamed into Okopy after the World War II and turned into a collective farm (kolkhoz) by the Soviet regime which had a renowned policy towards any religion (see Religion in the Soviet Union). Thus the mentioning of the Holy Trinity disappeared from its name. However it is the fact that Baal Shem Tov was born in the town of Okopy Świętej Trójcy rather than in Okopy. Like Lenin was born in Simbirsk rather than in Ulyanovsk. Okopy Świętej Trójcy of the 17th century would be very much different from Okopy of the 20-21st centuries, wouldn't you agree? Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 16:40, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
I see your point. However there is another aspect to it - most articles on Eastern European rabbis mention shtetls by their "Jewish" names - since, to the Jewish reader (and often editor!), the Polish/Ukrainan/Russian/Lithuanian etc. name is often completely unfamiliar. For the benefit of the reader, a pipe link links to the town's article, where the reader can find all version's of the town's names. For example, I would refer to Sandomierz as Tzauzmir: Tzauzmir. (In an article describing a very famous Eastern European rabbi, I would include the modern name of the town in brackets: Tzauzmir (Sandomierz). So in the Baal Shem Tov article, I would expect Okop (Okopy): Okop (Okopy). Since the shtetl name is already provided, with addition of the name of the town in brackets for the benefit of the modern reader, I don't see where the historically correct name should by added.) Perhaps all three should be included? It would look a bit awkward - as the mention of Mezhibuzh in the article already does. Ratzd'mishukribo (talk) 16:55, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- I am not trying to infringe onto the Jewish culture, however Baal Shem Tov was a citizen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth where Polish (and lesser Lithuanian) language was mostly used. Beside the Jewish population, the Commonwealth also had a great deal of people of other different origins such as Ruthenians who wrote in Cyrillic, various Turks who wrote in Arabian-type hieroglyphics, and many others. Denoting names in Jewish gives a reader wrong feeling as though people such as Baal Shem Tov lived in a mysterious Jewish country of the Central Europe. Compare it to the Ruthenian names of settlements within the Kingdom of Poland that are being constantly corrected and converted into Polish-written manner, while the Ruthenian language was among the accepted in the Commonwealth. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 17:46, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- True, but I think there is a precedent in previous articles to "tailor" them to the ethnicities described therein - Bible topics of Jewish interest only refer to the Bible as Tanakh, for example. Using the case you gave, it woould be appropriate to use Armenian names of Eastern European towns in an article concerning Armenian history in Poland. What do you think?
(By the way, please don't think I'm accusing you of any motive for making these changes - I don't fell that way at all.) Ratzd'mishukribo (talk) 19:12, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your other recent changes to the Baal Shem Tov page! I haven't touched, it looks like too much work. Ratzd'mishukribo (talk) 20:00, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
- The article really needs some revision on how it is written and some of its facts should be checked as well. About the names of shtetls, I think both names could be mentioned, thus, it will avoid disambiguity. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 23:36, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I typed the name the way I saw it spelled in scholarly sources. On Wikipedia we choose one way to spell things and then offer alternate spellings. Please do as you see fit. Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:01, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, please go ahead! Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:07, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- I don't mind if you make the changes to both Sulitza and Dolin, as long as you also supply the alternate spellings in the lead.
- BTW I just looked at Sambur (Hasidic dynasty). Can anything be done for this, or should it be nominated for deletion? Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:24, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
I hope you don't get into an edit war over this. Whatever the editor wants to add is fine, as long as he sources it. I deleted his additions with this explanation, and also went ahead and deleted all the storytelling from the article, which really belongs in Wikisource (with a source!). Hope this helps. Dear friend I made the article Fundamental astronomy book when i saw the article about the book A Question and Answer Guide to Astronomy. fundamental astronomy is a very more important and fundamental than that. it is a textbook in a lot of universities and science colleges. besides, students who want to take part in International Astronomy Olympiad use this book as the main reference. i tried to use the cover page, but it was deleted by wiki. I hope it can remain undeleted. regardsGshahali (talk) 07:36, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Dear friend thanks for your answer. but i don't really want the other book,A Question and Answer Guide to Astronomy removed. only i made a comparison. perhaps there is some strict view on the articles. I hope Fundamental astronomy book can remain undeleted. please remove the other book from this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Fundamental_astronomy_book
I will not forgive myself if i see the other book deleted, too. off course I would be happy to see my article in wikipedia. regardsGshahali (talk) 03:18, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Dear Ratzd'mishukribo
many thanks that the article "Fundamental Astronomy (book)" is kept. you mentioned me to make sure to add to the article the reasons why this book is notable. unfortunately i didn't save the reasons by other people. off course some were added by them at the end of the article under "Additional sources", but i have lost the reasons by the friend that gave five reasons to keep the book. (they have been deleted). do you think it is necessary to find them and add them? if yes, how can i restore them?

Hi there. It wasn't specified in the "lacking notability" tag what exactly was missing. If you Google Amy Butler you get over 20 million results; (she must be notable). I'm wondering what else I can do to establish notability. She's an extremely successful designer, has published a lot of books, generates a lot of business in her field. You can't walk into a fabric store without seeing her wares. Better Homes and Gardens and Apartment Therapy are cited as sources, and should be considered reliable as far as the field of design goes. (BHG is well established, has a WP article; AT has been around for 11 years and is well-read, it's in the top 900 Web sites viewed in the States, top 3000 worldwide). Several other secondary sources have been cited; yes, there are blogs, a couple are electronic magazines, they all focus on design, and include interviews with the subject, plus other reliable info that supports the information in the article. Evidence has been supplied that she has received heavy editorial coverage globally in publications in her field. Now, what else is required? Why are the secondary sources not considered reliable? How is it that notability has not been established within the field of design?OttawaAC (talk) 03:17, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Ghits show nothing in this case; most of the links are commercial promotion. But that's not why I tagged it; the article doesn't give indication of notability; this should be made clearer. הסרפד (Hasirpad) [formerly Ratz...bo] 03:24, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Indicated by what, though? Would you be able to give me an example of what I might do to strengthen the article, or point me towards a policy document that explains more? I find the tag much too vague, sorry.OttawaAC (talk) 03:59, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Indicated by
the sort of information you've just added - a sourced statement of what sort of influence the subject has had. As such, I'm removing the tag. Enjoy! הסרפד (Hasirpad) [formerly Ratz...bo] 04:12, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Ahmed Ziauddin Proposed Deletion
[edit]Hello Hasirpad,
I'm wondering why you think I'm not using references. Eight are listed in the footnotes. These include news reports from reputable journals like The Economist, Huffington Post, and the Washington Post. They pass all the criteria for reliability set by Wikipedia, and are routinely used in biographies of living people. See for example the biographies of two other lawyers: Tony Blair and his wife Cherie Blair. You will see that most of the references are from reputable news outlets. As such, I see no justification for deleting this article. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes, Aminul802Aminul802 (talk) 04:20, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
PS. I've noticed that you've pointed out that the individual concerned is known for only a single event. I'm going to further update the biography with some of his past activities, but as you note, the event is noteworthy, and is only going to be more noteworthy, as the leaks pertaining to this individual concern an ongoing tribunal which started in 2010. As the tribunal reaches the date on which it hopes to pass its first judgement, which is expected to be the a capital verdict in mid-late December, this news will gain more international attention, and wiki users would be increasingly interested in this individual who has been campaigning for such a tribunal for many years. The initial analysis in the media of the leaks seems to suggest that this person's involvement has been very significant indeed, so I think it is in the public interest to maintain a wiki page on him. Thanks againAminul802 (talk) 04:29, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- My point is that the references do not show that this lawyer himself is notable; only that the case is. If you have references that show that he is motable in his own right for other things, go ahead and add them. In any case, even if he is notable in his own right, it seems that the case is more notable than him - but the article focuses on the case primarily. הסרפד (Hasirpad) [formerly Ratz...bo] 15:30, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back so soon. I'm wondering whether, if i can't find more generally notable material, i should simply incorporate him into an article pertaining to the event instead, with a heading specifically about him?Aminul802 (talk) 16:04, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Yaakov Horowitz is a redirect to Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz. Talk:Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz, however, redirects to Talk:Yaakov Horowitz, due to a mistake made by an inexperienced editor. (As of now, the redirect has been broken by Smackbot.) I'd like to request a technical move of Talk:Yaakov Horowitz back to Talk:Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz, but I can't find the right venue. This move is particularly important as this article is potentially copyrighted and the CC-BY-SA-3.0 license by the original author appears there.

Cherokee moon ceremonies
[edit]I'm sorry but I don't understand what is going on here. There are authentic Cherokee moon ceremonies. I can't find any evidence for the existence of a Cherokee calendar - that is, their own specific calendar not simply a translation of the normal Gregorian calendar. Why the rename? And although I think it's a separate issue, why can't I find "spaces on the back of the turtle with the 13 yearly phases" in any reliable book on the Cherokee?
