asilvering (talk) 06:11, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Introduction to contentious topics
You have recently edited a page related to pseudoscience and fringe science, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. tgeorgescu (talk) 18:03, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Edit summary pings
Thanks for your recent contribution to Collaboration with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. I see that you pinged Elinruby in your edit summary, which is often a nice courtesy, so thanks for thinking of that. However, in this case, it's actually problematic, although you couldn't have known this. It turns out that Elinruby is topic-banned from that article, and any response by them of any kind to your ping would be a technical violation of their T-ban, and could lead to arbitration enforcement, resulting in even further sanctions on them.
When someone pings you, the natural response is to want to respond, so in this case, please don't ping them or write to them about this topic at all (not even a 'thank you') as they are unable to respond without risking sanctions, and they might be tempted to, or might respond automatically without thinking of the consequences. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is for right now. I know you didn't know, so there's nothing to apologize for, just take care going forward.
If you like, there's a gadget you can use that will let you see when someone is blocked: if they are, it decorates their user name in their signature with strikeout type (e.g., User:Example user) when they are WP:BLOCKed, or dotted underline (User:Example2) when they are T-banned or have other partial blocks. More information about the nature of the block is sometimes available and can be seen in those cases by mousing over the decorated username (but not on mobile devices). To enable this feature, go to Preferences, tab "Gadgets", section "Appearance", then check "Strike out usernames that have been blocked" and click the SAVE button at the bottom. - Thanks for informing me, as well as pointing me to the gadget. I appreciate you informing me about all of this. Cukrakalnis (talk) 09:13, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
