Correction

[edit]

I just fell onto this Wikipedia deal this morning and it just so happened to be featured on the Today Show. I am writing a piece for my company regarding the PT6 turboprop engine manufactured by Pratt& Whitney. In my researching I found your article or submission of facts, what ever you want to call it, and you mentioned the EMB 121 aircraft being powered by the PT6 engien then corrected yourself by saying it is powered by a -42 engine.

Would you please expain this to me. I have extensive experience with the EMB-120 Brazillia aircraft, which is actually powered by two Pratt 100 series Turboprop engines. The first aircraft I believe came out with Pratt 118 engines but at the aircraft progress other model, higher horseposer engines, were installed. This information is easily varifiable by viewing the Type Certificate Data sheet for the aircraft. Which can be accessed through the FAA web site.

  • What article are you referring to? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 18:00, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

Jerseys -Are-Tight

[edit]

Actually the "Jerseys-Are-Tight" pic is being used on the 2 Live Stews entry on this site and on the entry for the Stews, the picture is in focus so the picture is relevant.

Hello. I saw that you had been involved with this article and I noticed that there is little mention of the company, Best Foods, which was acquired by Unilever a couple of years ago. The article should, I think, make note of the distinction between the company and the brand and give some perspective about the company. Do you happen to know anything about the company which you could add? If not, I'll do some digging around.

BTW, Your Username reminds me of a secret word in a computer game of long long ago called "Advent". That was short for "Adventure" and was way before user interface graphics. The secret word was "XYZZY" I think. Anyway, Thanks for any more help with the article that you can provide. hydnjo talk 22:24, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

User/talk page deletion

[edit]

Zzyzx,

Please do not revert my talk/user pages. Alarmingly, a quary on Google for my username will return my user/talk pages as the first two results (in quotations, a quary without quotations will still show my user/talk page on the first page of results). This will lead to certian security and personal problems for me that I cannot discuss in detail. Please, allow them to be deleted. --SV

I deleted both your user page and your talk page since I saw no abuse. However, please keep in mind that Google's cache might not change for several days. Furthermore the pages might be re-created in the future. See Wikipedia:User page#How do I delete my user and user talk pages? for details. Take care. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 21:01, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, and I enjoyed working with you as well. I have read that section already, but please discourage recreation of these pages or recreate it under a different name if at all possible. (Also, is it possible to cancel my Wiki account?)

thank you for your opinion on my RfA

[edit]

Hello, just a quick note to say thank you for voting, even though you were not convinced of my experience. "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Perhaps I am ready for it, or perhaps, as you say, I am not. I hope that in the coming weeks and months I can prove you wrong, but no matter what I thank you for giving your honest opinion, it is really important to me. Thank you. :) GarrettTalk 10:56, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Page blanking

[edit]

Zzyzx11, I've temporarily protected User talk:63.18.182.244 for a while. If the earlier edits hadn't clearly been vandalism, I wouldn't be so bothered, but the user didn't start with the "look at my good edits" until he was on the verge of being blocked. Joyous (talk) 04:34, July 24, 2005 (UTC)

Since you created this template, I would like to notify you that I am thinking about putting it on TFD. Here's why: it is not necessary for you to type, "A1: Article does not appear to contain sufficient information to warrant an article. If you can correct this, please do so and remove this notice." First, you can just say, "there is little or no context". That is sufficient for us admins. Secondly, the speedy tags already say that if you "you intend to fix it, please remove this notice." Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:24, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

  • That's fine by me. The reason I added the text the way that I did is that I hope that it will encourage people to expand the articles, and avoid deletion. In other words, I added the extra text for the potential benefit of regular non-admin editors who might stumble upon the article, and choose to expand it. In either case, however, I see your point, and will not be offended if it is listed on TFD. --Blu Aardvark | (talk) | (contribs) 09:42, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for reverting the vandalism on my talk page. I'm afraid that more can probably be expected as I seem to have run afoul a certain vandal with an odd fixation on Cheerios and human sexuality. :) -Loren 06:16, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Just what statement in this article do you think should be considerd an assertion of notability, however disputed? I have several times placed on speedy articles that were already on VfD becuse the people who nominated them for VfD were not clear about the CSD, particualrly A7, since it is new. A number of such articles have been duly speedied. I really think this qualifes for speedy delete. DES 16:29, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Again exactly which statement in this article do you consider to be an assertion of notability? Nothing in the CSD says anything about "blatant" or "vanity" it says "no asserion of notability". Please talk with me about this. DES 16:34, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Speedy deletions

[edit]

You wrote: First of all, let me be honest and preface this by mentioning that I was not totally in favor of the new Wikipedia:Deletion of vanity articles criterion for speedy deletion. That said, the policy states that "articles where there is no remotely plausible assertion of notability should be considered." Otherwise, "If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead."'

The above is not the policy voted on, and i wish the page Wikipedia:Deletion of vanity articles had not been created, as I think it misrepresets the policy, the actual policy is at WP:CSD where it says "An article about a real person that does not assert that person's importance or significance." which i think covers both the cases above. (Please note that the word "vanity" was not included in the policy voted on.) I am trying to get agreement on a list of examples that illustrate what this does and does not mean more clearly so we will all be on the same page. Note than when i see soemthign on VfD that seems to me to qualify i fairly automatically put a speedy tag on it -- after considering the article and whether anything in it seem to me to be a claim of signifigance. DES 16:54, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

You also wrote: I will admit that since I saw the VFD tag on Brandon Barnes that I automatically assumed it was borderline without reading them carefully. However, Matt Deckard is different because Fedoralounge.com and Lottaliving.com are real web sites and being a moderator on those forums could still be debatable whether or not they are significant. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:39, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

I can understand your reasoning, while I disagree with it. There are many many thousands of web fora, and simply being a moderator on one is not, IMO, a claim of significance. If you see a tag from me in future, please check the actual article -- I will not put {{nn-bio}} on an article without reading the art and considering if there seems a claim; and I have commented on several VfDs where people suggested speedy that there *was* a claim of notability, albiet an implausible or minor one. I don't belive in streaching the CSD -- I do belive in defining them clearly. Thanks for discussing this with me. DES 16:54, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Ice Bowl

[edit]

Please check out my revisions and see if they are less POV, more factual, and more to your liking. Ironically, I'm a Chicago Bears fan. But I enjoy stuff about the "old days" of football, for any team, and the Ice Bowl game was one of a kind. Thankfully I was watching from the warmth of my living room at the time. Wahkeenah 02:23, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Actually, someone else had called it the "one of the greatest games" and I altered that into "one of the greatest, most dramatic games". Maybe that was overkill. I left it out of the introduction and instead used it to describe John Facenda's narration. One "dramatic" per article is probably sufficient. :) Wahkeenah 02:34, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Not sure entirely how this works, but you don't beleive there is a russian baritone named Alexander Podolkhov? Google the name. See how wrong you are.

Thankyou, you presumptuous git. Check things before you assume they are incorrect.

  • I'm extremely confused. Are you saying that I had previously deleted the article or voted on an Votes For Deletion for it? I can assure you that I have done neither. Is it a different article you are referring to? Are you referring to Alexander Podolkhov? Currently there is no record that that article ever being deleted. [1]. Kat's 9 lives

[edit]

Hi Zzyzx11, my page on Kat Desktop Search Environment has survived your request for deletion and I want to thank the people who voted for keeping it. I presume that you are not a computer specialist (I don't have the time to read all of your user talk) so I want to reassure you that you will surely hear about Kat in the (near) future. I don't know if it is possible to know how many hits a Wikipedia page gets, but it would be interesting also for me to know that number (and its evoluton in time). As I mentioned in the discussion related to you request for deletion, Kat reached 13,609 downloads on SourceForge. You can easily check it. And the new site which I did put online two weeks ago already reached 1738 visitors. The Desktop Search topic is one of the hottest topics of the moment. Windows and Mac OSX have their own Desktop Search Tools. Four months ago I understood that Linux did not have a Search Tool, and that it would take a couple of years before the official KDE team could complete such a solution. Therefore I started this project and now, after 4 months of really hard work, Kat is available for general use. It will be included in the major distribution of Linux in the last trimester of this year, so you will surely hear about it :-) Thanks for you attention Rcappuccio 19:54, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Welcome to the daily Ronald20 (talk · contribs) revert patrol. You can read all the gory details about him at WP:VIP and WP:AN/3RR (where nothing has been done so far), plus his talk page, and the talk page at 204.108.96.10 (talk · contribs). Since I have no response from official channels, I've finally made my very first appeal to an admin for a personal favor. Something has to be done about this user. Since he also has a dialup home account that he sometimes edits under as an anon, it may come down to protecting the couple of dozen articles that he regularly edits. :-( BlankVerse 19:18, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

I asked User:Grutness, who went ahead and blocked both the User name and IP for 24 hrs. As for the school IP: From what I can tell, Ronald20 is the only one editing Wikipedia articles from that IP (and the six others that I have listed on his talk page), so I think that the IPs are allocated either on a per school or per computer basic at LAUSD, and are probably static IPs. I see nothing wrong with a 24 hr. block on a single IP, although blocks timed to coincide with his 7am-12 noon editing at LAUSD would also work.
I see that you also nominated a bunch of sound files that he uploaded. He also uploaded a bunch of images that were obviously copyrighted. BlankVerse 09:22, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

Wow, you guys at RC patrol are fast. Good job. :) However, {{vfu}} and {{TempUndelete}} are different. The former is meant to be placed at the VFD page for an article, while TempUndelete is meant to replace an article while it is under undeletion. This idea came during a horribly long discussion with zen master at Wikipedia talk:Votes for deletion/Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Full Plot Summary. I'll make the proposal for use of the template, but I wanted to have the template first. Give me a few days before nominating it on TFD (I'm a regular there, so I know how it works). Check the templates and tell me what you think. --Titoxd 01:50, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

The Notability Factor

[edit]

Hey. I was just wondering. I didn't see anything mentioned under Wikipedia:Autobiography regarding foreign artists. What I mean is does a band qualify if it has been prominently featured in the mainstream media in its home country? Same applies to top 100 lists and so forth... Thx btw for keeping me in check :D

--Laugurinn sjálfur 05:26, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

I've been on wikipedia a while but I haven't started writing articles until recently. You blocked me from editing a page I was writing on a band called Masters of the Blacksides. Hey; Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my userpage by this user. I've been watching his edits for a little while, now, and they've been pretty out-and-out vandalism. He also created Wikipedia:Babel, which crashes my browser (Firefox) whenever I try to open it. I've seen you around a bit, and I respect your opinion on things, so: What should I do about this user? What can I do? His page makes him out to be a misguided, well-intentioned youth. I don't know if this is true. His edits sure seem to be unilateral, and he seems to be willfully ignoring warnings on his talk page. Could you block/ban him? Leave one; thanks again. jglc | t | c 03:52, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

  • I agree. Given his age, I was trying to be generous... but edits like adding the text "poop" to pages, while saying that "I didn't vandalize Wikipedia" seems to me just an act of bad faith. Regardless, until he does something blatantly troll-like, I'm going to just try to run damage control (like I noticed you did on Backward message), and keep a watchful eye out. jglc | t | c 04:29, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Hello. It was discussed a while ago, but I can't find the talk page right now. Basically, it's considered 'bad form' to use {{fairuse}} pics on the MainPage. Maybe User:Pharos can give you a better answer. -- PFHLai 04:39, 2005 August 8 (UTC) Sorry to keep you waiting, I am a slow typist. -- PFHLai 04:41, 2005 August 8 (UTC)

I found this: Talk:Main Page/Archive 40#Scotland map, where "bad form" was mentioned. There has to be a longer discussion somewhere. I remember reading about it.... You may also want to ask User:MacGyverMagic when he comes back from his vacation. He is another expert on the issue. -- PFHLai 04:55, 2005 August 8 (UTC)
Well, it's preferable because it's a free encyclopedia, and our face to the world (the Main Page) should be absolutely free to exemplify this. As to policy, this is something I was informed of as a young admin in the halcyon days of late 2004, but I can't seem to find a policy page that explains this explicitly. I think we may have to go to Jimbo on this one.--Pharos 05:16, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

And just look at the section... there is nothing worthwhile there! There is no proof... there are no links... its pure, unadulterated crap. Just what was Ajax called before the word was coined? The section claims there was a name... but doesn't tell us what it is! Msg by 24.53.131.244

Let me have my say...

[edit]

I attempted to add links to bolster criticism but was ousted from doing so. I even created a seperate topic about a farcical competing technology that was VfD. I have links to blogs from much criticism on these items and they have all be removed. I didn't get into an editor war over them, I simply let it go. I agree that there needs to be more evidence listed, but it appears that we are not allowed to actually list it. - Sleepnomore 17:08, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

SO What!!

[edit]

Why bother putting a "Criticism" section? What a bad idea.

Your blog is as good a forum as any for such things.

A criticism section doesn't belong in an encyclopedia... its asinine...

You are the only one who wants it there.

Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh have MILLIONS of critics...

My friend is just a bright individual that is just trying to make a living! He is not deceiving anyone into believing falsehoods. He has nothing to gain from coining a word... other than the credit he is due. Please back off. Msg by 24.53.131.244

  • Your friend is most likely you. It wouldn't suprise me if someone like Jesse would vent his anger from an anonymous IP. Additionally, criticism about George Bush can be found all over wikipedia. Read the article about Bush and you'll find criticism sprinkled throughout the article as well. - Sleepnomore 17:23, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

I am not Jesse

[edit]

I live near Blacksburg, VA. Jesse lives out west... I am not using a proxy, nor have I tried to hide my IP. This crap has just come to my attention, and I haven't had time to create a login.

He is not the Second Coming... He is just a dude I know, have known for decades. He's never hurt anyone.

You, sir, are a complete ... (deleted) ...(as if that were the measure of a man).

The forces of the universe will always take care of individuals such as yourself. What goes around, comes around. You can't stop it. You're totally screwed.

  • 1) Why are we discussing this on Zzyzx11's talk page? I think we should move this discussion to our own talk pages and leave this guy alone. He's busy enough. As far as your personal attacks, please start off with the Wikipedia tuturial to get your bearings on what is appropriate and what is not. 2) I'm not disputing that Mr Garrett should have his own article. It's obvious from his accomplishments that he should. However, when someone comes to a certain fame, they must accept all of it, not just the good. When you coin a technology as "new" that has been around for 7 years, you are bound to draw more than a few critics. - Sleepnomore 17:33, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
  • 2) I am learning as I go... tell me how...
    • Thanks a million for turning the attitude around from vandalism to cooperation. Its not always possible to get that cooperation. Thank you for that. In the mean time, start with that tutorial I pointed you to, and ask questions. I'll be glad to help you around if you ask me on my talk page. I'm fairly new myself. I've only been here a couple months. But I know a good bit so far and will be glad to share the knowledge. - Sleepnomore 17:39, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
      • Look, I'm not sure I have time for this sort of thing... IMing would be so much easier, less time consuming... And... What was the technology called before it was Ajax?
        • There were various names. XmlHttpRequest, XmlHttp, DHTML, XML Data Islands, REST, etc. In fact the capabilities that Jesse claims were "new" were actually in existence in Internet Explorer since 1998. Books were published on how to use them since then as well. If you want to IM, tell me what IM software and what username I should contact and I'll be glad to discuss this with you as long as it remains civil. - Sleepnomore 17:49, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
  • AjaxOK at AIM register_here--- you can user AOLs software... or iChat... or, I like Adium I only have about a half hour or so before I just have to get down to the river and enjoy this unbelievable sun... but once we are added to each other's lists... I guess we can keep going in the future there

Dubious

[edit]

I wasn't the one who removed the dubious markup. This was removed on Ajax by User:Sleepyhead81. Sleepyhead81 has also been using Wikipedia to market his product 24SevenOffice. He is an employee of 24SevenOffice. He's placed links about his product all over Wikipedia and I've had to remove them. - Sleepnomore 17:29, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
