He has actively taken part in numerous movements aimed at holding the government accountable for public services and infrastructure projects. Through advocacy, he has become an effective voice for people, consistently fighting for better living conditions, services, healthcare, and public welfare. Some of his notable activities are: he was one of the organizers of February 25th demonstration, leader of the campaign of breaking water meters in 2022, his continuous protest demanding a better health condition in his hometown. His continuous present in voicing people’s demands has caused him numerous death threats and attacks.
Aram Mala Nuri is born on 25th Feb.1989. He currently lives in Kalar in Iraq. Around the year 2005, with his starting studying in a college, he joins the world of politics and starts his participation in civil activities. He has taken part in environmental, cultural and humanitarian activities. In 2014, they found 'Millat' (Nation Teahouse), the most famous tea house in the city and is prominent in the region which along with serving tea, has been a center of social gathering and cultural affairs such as discussing social issues and politics, art exhibition, poetry reading, memorial reading, setting an atmosphere to watch movies under the title ‘Cinama Kaltur’ (Cinema Culture) due to the lack of cinema in the city, etc.
Activism
[edit]During his life time, Aram Mala Nuri has contributed in numerous activities revolving around a better life condition for people. Staring with his early life, for the first time in his life he took part in the first demonstration by citizens against the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) demanding a better and worthy life for people. It was on September 7th, 2005. The movement was important and influential due to the fact that it was the fist time that a demonstration held against the government after the establishment of the KRG in 1992 and in the post-Saddam Hussein era. It is worth mentioning that it aimed at criticizing corruptions and poor basic services such as water, electricity, roads and etc.
Later on, on February 25th, 2011, Aram was on of the leaders and organizer of another demonstration in Kalar that was effective and again targeting public services along with criticizing the government for using violence to cease the demonstration in Sulaymaniyah on February 17th, 2011 including torturing and killing its own citizens. He with other demonstrators wore white belts called ‘Peace Belt’ symbolizing nonviolence and peace. Aram continued supporting and taking part in such activities during the years 2010th such as demonstrations by teachers and jobholders for their basic rights and salaries and for lack of employment as well.
His activities involved not only in demonstration but also humanitarian activities. He worked to aid impoverished people and worked with a humanitarian organization named Nova in refugee camps in Khanaqin, Gulala, and Kalar for four years (2016-2020). Furthermore in 2019, due to the economical impact of the two month breakdown that COVID-19 quarantine left on poor families, he contributed in a project called ‘Tweshui Spi’[2](White Food). In the project, they distributed food supplies to 1000 families in Kalar.
Relating to the political condition of the Iraqi government, with other political activists, Aram joined in a campaign to boycott 2021 Iraqi parliamentary election. Responders of that campaign across the Kurdistan Region, decided to boycott the election because people lost their hope and believe in elections in the country. In general, they came to the conclusion that through elections, no change can be made.
Reported from the Election Observation Mission, Iraq 2021[3] only 44% or 9,602, 876 out of 22,118,368 voters voted. Moreover, in the section dedicated to ‘information voters received about the election’ in Kurdish, in figure 16, topics of the election-related post shared from September 1st till October 10th, the day of the election, it indicates that 1.74% of the election-related posts were about boycotting the election.
What is more, as a standing up to the government’s injustice, in January 2022, in a campaign in social media, Aram called people for breaking the new electricity and water meters. The residents not only in Kalar, but Iraqi Kurdistan as a whole have been criticizing the KRG for rising living costs and lack of basic services. The KRG forced people to use the meters, anyone who would not use it, would have to pay a penalty of 6 million dinars which is approximately 4000 dollars. This was unbearable by people so in reaction they followed the campaign.
Death threats and attacks
[edit]Nuri’s involvement in criticizing and taking civil actions against the government led him numerous death threats and eventually on February 26th of 2022 he was attacked by an unknown group. On February 25th, 2011, Aram was on of the leaders and organizer of a demonstration in Kalar that aimed at demanding public services along with criticizing the government for using violence to cease the demonstration in Sulaymaniyah on February 17th, 2011. He with other demonstrators wore white belts called ‘Peace Belt’ symbolizing nonviolence and peace. At that protest, he was stabbed by an unknown individuals.
According to a report by CPT_Peacemaker Team on April 11th 2022, which they ‘met with civil activist Aram after he was seriously injured in an attack by an unidentified perpetrators following a series of the threats he received following his continuous and persistent activism work,’ including being imprisoned and being stabbed by anonymous people in protests. In the report, they mentioned those death threats connected to his activities including participating in the demonstrations and activities against Kurdish regional government which was against poor road conditions from Kalar to Sulaymaniyah, actively taking part in social media and local protests about the meters_calling people to break the new electricity and water meters in January 2022, criticizing KRG for rising living costs and lack of basic services such as electricity, poor condition of schools and medical services.
As a consequence of his activism on those actions mentioned above he has received death threats following his activities that eventually led him to be attacked to death on February 26th, 2022 by perpetrators that were so professional they did not leave any evidence. They stabbed him 17 times, leaving him with sever wounds. Up to this point, the people behind that action has not been discovered yet and Aram is receiving death threats to cease his activities. After all as CPT states, The KRG has a history of suppressing public criticism, restricting free speech, and violating human rights, including threatening and killing its own citizens.
