Manathon (May 2009 – Present) is an annual event that takes place in and around Banbury, Oxfordshire each May. Contenders have gathered every year since to take part in Poker, Darts, Ten Pin Bowling, Pool and Golf to amass points to become the overall winner of the weekend and the recipient of the Manathon Trophy. 2024 sees Manathon 15, missing 2 seasons for Covid lockdown.

Early life

[edit]

The origin was a stag do for one of the participants in 2009. The idea was spawned by Kie who after taking part in the Manathon's predecessor (The Rough Putter Cup), one Easter said, "why don't we go on and have a game of darts and pool?". The Manathon was born. That Summer Wilf was getting married so he devoted a second stag do to the Manathon during the May bank holiday. As most of the circle of friends played or were in some way affiliated to Cropredy FC (who play on the site of the annual 'Fairport Cropredy Convention'[1]), the club house Cropredy[2] was the ideal venue for kicking off the inaugural event.

Manathon 1

[edit]

The first gathering of contestants took part in a format that was to stick but be tweaked over time. Poker on Friday night at Cropredy FC club house was followed on Saturday morning by 18 holes of golf at Kirtlington Golf course and then Pool in Banbury town at 'Fast Eddies'. The following day saw contestants gather at Banbury Bowl to enjoy 10 Pin Bowling and the final event Darts.
