Parks and recreation
[edit]El Paso is home to the largest urban park in the nation. The Franklin Mountains State Park, with its over 24,248 acres, is completely located within the city limits. The park is open for year-round recreation including hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, scenic driving and vistas. There are also over 100 parks throughout the metropolitan area.
The Wyler Aerial Tramway is operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and is located in the Franklin Mountains State Park. The tramway complex covers 196 acres (0.79 km2) on the east side of the Franklin Mountains. The gondolas travel along two 2600 foot 1 3/8" diameter steel cables to Ranger Peak, 5,632 feet (1,717 m) above sea level. The trip takes about four minutes and lifts riders up 940 vertical feet above the boarding area.
Hueco Tanks State Historic Site is a Texas historic site in the Hueco Tanks area, approximately 32 miles (51 km) northeast of El Paso. The park is popular for recreation such as birding and bouldering, and is culturally and spiritually significant to many Native Americans. This significance is partially manifested in the pictographs (rock paintings) that can be found throughout the region, many of which are thousands of years old.[1] Also within the city limits the Chamizal National Memorial is a 54.90-acre (22.22 ha) memorial park that serves primarily as a cultural center and contains art galleries, a theater, and an amphitheatre. A museum, which details the history of the U.S.–Mexico border, is located inside the visitor center.
Skate Parks
[edit]In 2007 some skaters from El Paso decided to give their input in adding skate parks to the park system. Out of the 9 public skate parks located in El Paso, only 1 of them had a high quality concrete facility. After looking over the skate parks and viewing damages here and there that needed repair, the best people to assist in address and monitoring the issue were the skaters. The reason being is because they are the ones who are familiar with the facilities. [2]
Paul Zimmerman, Gabe Lawler and Bill Robertson banded together to form a board of directors for the El Paso Skatepark Association. Their goal was to help communicate with the people of City Hall who were in charge of designing and building the skate parks. As children started finding an interest in skate boarding (1-7), the need for more facilities was a high demand which was a productive way of spending tax payers money and adding changes within the community.
In February 2008 the EPSA was given the opportunity to solicit donations to maintain their facilities and be able to help the city with building new facilities for the growing skate boarding population. The association has helped the city with requesting services for warranty on the ramp equipment which included maintaining the repairs on the concrete in the least expensive manor. [3]
With the help of the community and partnerships, the mission of these individuals has been a success. EPSA unites the art of skateboarding communities every year.
