Franchise

The Batverse is a media franchise and shared universe centered on the Batman series of superhero films, produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The franchise is based on various DC Comics properties associated with the character Batman and is separate from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), another DC Comics-based shared universe. The franchise began with the 2022 film The Batman and will continue with sequel films and spin-off television series for HBO Max.

Development

When it entered development in 2014, The Batman (2022) was intended to be part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Warner Bros. Pictures' shared universe of superhero films based on DC Comics properties. Ben Affleck was cast as the DCEU's Batman in 2013, and in 2015, he entered negotiations to direct and co-write The Batman with Geoff Johns.
