A collect-a-thon (also stylized as collectathon) is a type of video game with a strong emphasis on collecting items. The term is most often applied to platform games; collect-a-thon platformers differ from traditional platform games because of their more open, nonlinear design. Instead of reaching a single goal to complete a level, each level features a mission-based structure that rewards items to unlock new areas. Collect-a-thon platformers, such as Super Mario 64 (1996) and Banjo-Kazooie (1998), were popular during the sixth generation of video game consoles in the late 1990s. British game developer Rare is often associated with collect-a-thons.
