Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut is a 2003 platform video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the GameCube and Microsoft Windows. It is an enhanced port of Sonic Adventure, originally released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Alongside additions to the gameplay, such as an extra missions mode and unlockable Game Gear Sonic games, the game features enhanced graphics and rendering upgrades.
Gameplay
[edit]The gameplay of Sonic Adventure DX changes little from the original version. A 3D platformer, the game features six primary characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma. Each character must be guided through a level called an Action Stage to fulfill a certain objective. Action Stages are found by exploring open-ended hub worlds called Adventure Fields. Players earn emblems for completion of levels, and can also interact with Chao, a virtual pet.
Sonic Adventure DX also introduces several features not seen in the original release. Among these is a Mission Mode, which becomes available upon completion of each character's story. In Mission Mode, players must perform special tasks in certain levels; there are a total of sixty missions. The game features emulated versions of the twelve Sonic games released for Sega's Game Gear handheld as bonuses.[a] A seventh playable character, Metal Sonic, can be unlocked by collecting every emblem in the game. It also supports connectivity with the Game Boy Advance Sonic titles.
Development
[edit]Like the original, Sonic Adventure DX was developed by Sonic Team, who ported the game from the Dreamcast to the GameCube and Microsoft Windows. The game's visual appearance was overhauled for the GameCube and Windows: the polygon count on each character model was increased, and level textures were refined.[1]
Notes
[edit]- ^ These include Sonic Drift, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails' Skypatrol, Sonic Blast, Tails Adventure, and the 8-bit versions of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
